Former senate deputy president pleads not guilty to luxury car bribe

The Sun26-06-2025
MELAKA: Former Dewan Negara deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Ali Mohamad pleaded not guilty today at the Ayer Keroh Sessions Court to a charge of accepting a luxury vehicle as a bribe in 2015.
Judge Elesabet Paya Wan presided over the hearing where Mohamad Ali denied the accusation of corruptly receiving a Range Rover Sport from a company director. The bribe was allegedly an inducement to award subcontract works for a land reclamation project in Kota Laksamana.
The offence reportedly occurred in June 2015 at the company's office in Taman Kota Syahbandar, Melaka Tengah. The charge falls under Section 16(a)(A) of the MACC Act 2009, which carries a maximum penalty of 20 years' imprisonment and a fine of at least five times the bribe's value or RM10,000, whichever is higher.
Deputy public prosecutor Datuk Ahmad Akram Gharib requested the court to retain the bail conditions set by the Shah Alam Sessions Court on June 18, including a RM60,000 bail, passport surrender, and a witness contact ban. He also sought to transfer the Shah Alam case to Ayer Keroh for joint proceedings.
Defence lawyer Md Yunos Shariff did not object, and the court scheduled the next mention for August 14. Mohamad Ali had earlier claimed trial in Shah Alam to 20 charges involving RM235,000 and three luxury cars linked to the same project.

Three locals were detained for questioning in connection with the illegal sale of various items crafted from protected wildlife skins. A source said the activity was uncovered after enforcement officers from the Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan), together with intelligence officers from the 19th Battalion of the General Operations Force (GOF) Central Brigade, carried out a raid under Operasi Bersepadu Khazanah at about 11.40am. "The team discovered the business was selling various products made from the skins of protected wild animals," the source said. The raid resulted in the seizure of 86 handbags and 14 belts believed to be made from exotic animal skins. The suspects were released on police bail, while all confiscated items were taken to Perhilitan's headquarters for further investigation. Authorities reminded the public that the trade of wildlife-based products without valid authorisation is a serious offence under the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010 (Act 716), and strict action will be taken without compromise.

Sikie also outlined key development projects under the Mid Rajang Regional Development Agency (MiRRDA), reinforcing the government's commitment to transforming rural infrastructure. These include RM60 million to upgrade the road from Nanga Kelebu to Rumah Ado, Kakus; RM10 million for road upgrades to Ulu Mejau; and RM10 million for the road to Entajum. 'These projects are not just about connectivity, they are investments in the future of rural Sarawakians,' he said. Reaffirming Sarawak's Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS 2030), he said the state is on track to achieve an RM15,000 household income target by 2030. Among the flagship initiatives is the Free Tertiary Education Scheme at state-owned institutions, aimed at equipping Sarawakians for better-paying jobs. As part of his visit, Sikie also presented an RM18,000 Minor Rural Project (MRP) grant to the Rumah Rawing JKKK for local development efforts. The ceremony was attended by some 500 residents.
