Putrajaya approves RM6.6m for slope repairs at Kelantan water treatment plant
KOTA BHARU: The federal government has approved an allocation of RM6.61 million to fund slope repair works at the Bukit Remah water treatment plant in Tanah Merah. Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Mohd Nassuruddin Daud said the repair works were necessary following a landslide that occurred last November. He said the state government had promptly submitted an application to Putrajaya after the incident, demonstrating its commitment to protecting public welfare. "In response to the incident, the state government approved an initial allocation of RM235,000 to finance two studies by the Public Works Department, a soil investigation and a detailed topographic survey, aimed at assessing the full extent of the damage and planning remedial works. "The state's prompt action was well received by the federal government, which subsequently agreed to provide the multi-million ringgit allocation for the repair works. "We are deeply grateful to the federal government for this meaningful approval. "We will ensure the issue is resolved swiftly in the interest of the people," he said in a Facebook post. Nassuruddin said the landslide, triggered by continuous heavy rainfall on Nov 26, 2024, caused a 130-metre ground movement that severely damaged the sheet pile structure at the water treatment facility. He said the incident also resulted in the rupture of both raw and treated water pipelines, and posed serious risks to key infrastructure, including the chlorine control room, chemical storage tanks, and a Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) substation. He said the matter reflects the spirit of mature and constructive politics, as well as strong federal-state cooperation in addressing issues that affect the rakyat. "The people's voices will continue to be brought forward with sincerity and responsibility. "This is a clear example of effective federalism in action, carried out for the common good," he said.

Former Senate deputy president claims trial to bribery involving luxury vehicle
MELAKA — Former Dewan Negara deputy president, Datuk Seri Mohamad Ali Mohamad, pleaded not guilty in the Ayer Keroh Sessions Court today to a charge of accepting a luxury car as a bribe in 2015. He entered the plea after the charge was read out to him before Judge Elesabet Paya Wan. According to the charge sheet, Mohamad Ali is accused of corruptly accepting a Range Rover Sport from a company director as an inducement to award subcontract works for a land reclamation project in Kota Laksamana. The alleged offence took place at the company's office in Taman Kota Syahbandar, Melaka Tengah, in June 2015. The charge, under Section 16(a)(A) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009, is punishable under Section 24(1) of the same Act, which carries up to 20 years' imprisonment and a fine of not less than five times the value of the bribe or RM10,000, whichever is higher. Deputy public prosecutor Datuk Ahmad Akram Gharib urged the court to maintain the same bail conditions set by the Shah Alam Sessions Court on June 18 – namely RM60,000 bail with one surety, surrender of the accused's passport, and a prohibition on contacting prosecution witnesses. He also applied for the case previously filed in Shah Alam to be transferred to Ayer Keroh so that both matters could be heard together. Defence counsel Md Yunos Shariff raised no objection, and the court fixed August 14 for mention. On June 18, Mohamad Ali had claimed trial in the Shah Alam Sessions Court to 20 charges of accepting RM235,000 in cash and three luxury cars in relation to the same reclamation project. — BERNAMA

MELAKA: Former Dewan Negara deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Ali Mohamad pleaded not guilty today at the Ayer Keroh Sessions Court to a charge of accepting a luxury vehicle as a bribe in 2015. Judge Elesabet Paya Wan presided over the hearing where Mohamad Ali denied the accusation of corruptly receiving a Range Rover Sport from a company director. The bribe was allegedly an inducement to award subcontract works for a land reclamation project in Kota Laksamana. The offence reportedly occurred in June 2015 at the company's office in Taman Kota Syahbandar, Melaka Tengah. The charge falls under Section 16(a)(A) of the MACC Act 2009, which carries a maximum penalty of 20 years' imprisonment and a fine of at least five times the bribe's value or RM10,000, whichever is higher. Deputy public prosecutor Datuk Ahmad Akram Gharib requested the court to retain the bail conditions set by the Shah Alam Sessions Court on June 18, including a RM60,000 bail, passport surrender, and a witness contact ban. He also sought to transfer the Shah Alam case to Ayer Keroh for joint proceedings. Defence lawyer Md Yunos Shariff did not object, and the court scheduled the next mention for August 14.
