Akon's brother pulled off epic impersonations, lip-syncing his shows and booking gigs under his name

Express Tribune03-05-2025

Akon recently revealed that his brothers once impersonated him during concerts, with one of them, Abou 'Bu' Thiam, acting as his double.
In a candid interview on the 'Bootleg Kev' podcast, the Grammy-nominated artist admitted that Bu would occasionally step in for him at shows when Akon's schedule became too hectic. Bu, however, didn't sing live but would lip-sync to Akon's tracks while a DJ played in the background, and the audience never realized the difference.
The family's hustle didn't stop there. Akon's other brother, Omar Thiam, took it a step further by booking performances under Akon's name without his permission, pocketing the earnings. Akon described Omar's actions as 'gangsta,' acknowledging that his brothers had managed to pull off the deception successfully for some time.
Akon explained that the resemblance between him and his brothers was so strong that fans couldn't distinguish them unless they saw him in person. Despite the deception, Akon noted there were no hard feelings, and the family laughs about it today.
However, the trick eventually stopped working when Bu became widely recognized in the music industry. Bu Thiam went on to carve out a successful career, becoming the youngest VP of A&R at Def Jam at just 28. He played a pivotal role in shaping the careers of artists like Rihanna and helped launch Lady Gaga's career. Bu later served as EVP at Columbia Records, managed Kanye West, and founded his own label, BuVision, which partnered with Atlantic Music Group in 2025.
Before becoming a major music executive, Bu had a hand in Akon's early success, discovering T-Pain, Jeremih, and producing hits like Watch the Throne.

Denis Villeneuve to helm next 'Bond' film

Oscar-nominated Denis Villeneuve will direct the next James Bond film, Amazon's MGM Studios said on Wednesday, taking charge of one of Hollywood's most enigmatic spies and longest-running movie series, as per Reuters. Villeneuve, the Canadian film director and writer, has earned critical acclaim for films such as Sicario, Dune, Dune: Part Two, Blade Runner 2049, and Arrival. He was nominated for Best Director at the 2017 Oscars for sci-fi film Arrival, which starred Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner, and for Best Adapted Screenplay for Dune, based on author Frank Herbert's highly acclaimed 1965 novel of the same name, at the 2022 Oscars. "Some of my earliest movie-going memories are connected to 007. I grew up watching James Bond films with my father, ever since Dr No with Sean Connery, said Villeneuve said in a statement. "I'm a die-hard Bond fan," he continued. " To me, he's sacred territory. I intend to honour the tradition and open the path for many new missions to come. This is a massive responsibility, but also, incredibly exciting for me and a huge honour. " The upcoming Bond film will be the first under Amazon's MGM Studios, which took creative control of the film franchise under a new joint venture with longtime rights holders Michael Wilson and Barbara Broccoli earlier this year. As previously announced, Amy Pascal and David Heyman will serve as producers for the Bond venture. However, the franchise is yet to name a new lead actor following Daniel Craig's departure after No Time to Die in 2021, which earned nearly $800 million in global box office collections. Inspired by Ian Fleming's novels, the Bond franchise has spanned over 60 years, grossing more than $7 billion at the global box office, making it one of the most successful ever. As per Deadline, the Bond directing gig has been the most closely watched in Hollywood ever since Amazon MGM acquired full creative control of the franchise in February.

Amanda Seyfried reflects on her challenging Wicked audition experience

Amanda Seyfried has once again opened up about her intense audition process for Wicked, confirming that she auditioned six times for the role of Glinda and describing the experience as both grueling and transformative. Speaking on the June 19 episode of Backstage's In the Envelope podcast, the Oscar-nominated actress revealed that the auditions took place in 2021 while she was filming Hulu's The Dropout, a demanding schedule she nonetheless tried to navigate in pursuit of the part. 'I auditioned like six times for Wicked. I barely had time to do it, but I made it work,' she said. 'I worked my ass off for years and years on that music.' Seyfried shared that she trained with a vocal coach, attended weekend auditions, and recorded performances including the number 'Popular' which she submitted to director Jon M. Chu. She also previously recalled, during a Happy Sad Confused podcast appearance earlier this year, singing with Cynthia Erivo during one of the final stages of the process. 'That was a moment,' Seyfried said. 'Even though I didn't get the role, I felt the strongest I ever have vocally.' Despite not being cast, the Mamma Mia! star emphasized that the process was creatively rewarding. 'I didn't get the part, but I came out a better singer,' she told Backstage. 'It gave me the confidence I needed.' Ultimately, the coveted role of Glinda went to pop star and Broadway alum Ariana Grande, who also auditioned five times. Cynthia Erivo was cast as Elphaba. Both actresses were officially announced in late 2021. .
