ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - An Erbil court has issued an arrest warrant for a former member of the Iraqi parliament on charges of insulting a public body or official.
The Erbil Investigative Court issued a warrant for Ahmed Haji Rashid, a member of the Kurdistan Justice Group (Komal) who served in the parliament's previous term, and sent it to a court in Sulaimani, where Rashid lives, to be carried out. The warrant was issued on June 5 but was only publicly reported on Thursday.
The specific reason for the warrant is unknown, but Rashid has been charged with Article 226 of the Iraqi Penal Code, which stipulates that anyone who insults the government, courts, armed forces, or any other organized body, or public authorities and official institutions, "shall be punished with imprisonment for a period not exceeding 7 years, or detention or fine."
An official from Komal and friend of Rashid told Rudaw on the condition of anonymity on Friday that he is willing to appear before the judge 'if there is a court with no party influence.'
Rashid has been very critical of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and suggested in a recent interview with the pro-Iran al-Ahad TV that thousands of drones confiscated during the 12-day war between Iran and Israel in Tehran may have been smuggled into Iran through the Kurdistan Region.

Iraq denies border breach with Syria
Shafaq News - Baghdad On Saturday, Iraq's Border Forces Command dismissed claims that bulldozers had removed earthen barriers along the border with Syria, after a video circulating online raised concerns over a potential breach. In a statement, the command clarified that the footage was filmed inside Syrian territory, specifically in Aleppo province, and bears no connection to Iraqi border activity. It also confirmed that the Iraqi-Syrian border remains stable and fully secured, reinforced by defensive structures, advanced surveillance systems, and continuous monitoring by Iraqi security units. To limit the spread of misinformation, the command urged media outlets and social media users to rely exclusively on official sources, warning that legal action would be pursued against individuals who disseminate false or misleading content. The clarification followed earlier reports of a build-up by armed extremist factions near the Iraqi-Syrian border. In response, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) are finalizing preparations for a broad security campaign targeting ISIS cells operating in the Syrian desert close to the Iraqi border, according to sources. ISIS activity has recently intensified across areas stretching from the Palmyra and Homs deserts to parts of Deir ez-Zor province near the frontier. Reports indicated that the group is preparing attacks designed to exploit existing security vulnerabilities in the region.

Authorities wrap up search for missing Erbil woman
Also in Kurdistan DEM Party to attend PKK disarmament ceremony in Sulaimani KRG blames PMF for drone attacks in Erbil Yazidi survivor says ISIS banned Kurdish language Erbil court issues warrant for ex-MP A+ A- ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The family of Avesta Yousuf, who fell into an Erbil river in April, plan to continue looking for her as civil defense teams wrap up their three-month search on Saturday. 'After the completion of the civil defense teams' mission, we will remain and continue searching,' said Avesta's uncle Fakhreddin. Avesta, 27, fell into the Mergasor River in Soran district, around 132 kilometers north of Erbil, while on a picnic with her family on April 5. She had reportedly jumped into the water to save her brother who had fallen in. He survived, but Avesta was swept away by the current. In June, Karwan Mirawdali, director of Soran Civil Defense, told Rudaw they would end their search on July 5 and present a final report to the relevant authorities. Search efforts intensified on the last day, Saturday, with more than 100 personnel deployed around the river, using several techniques to locate Avesta, according to Rudaw's correspondent on the ground. The search will continue until 7:00 pm when local officials will hold a press conference. Avesta's uncle said the family intends to perform a funeral prayer in absentia for her on Saturday. 'As respect for the effort and hardship that the people of Shanidar and that area have had, we want to convey our thanks and appreciation and for them to participate with us in the prayer,' he said. They also plan to hold a funeral in Erbil but the date has not been set. The Kurdistan Region's lakes and rivers draw crowds during the hot summers, yet they tragically claim lives every year due to drownings. Erbil's Civil Defence Directorate has attributed the fatal accidents to poor swimming skills, unfamiliarity with the terrain, dangerously cold water temperatures and a lack of proper gear like life jackets and inflatables.

DEM Party to attend PKK disarmament ceremony in Sulaimani
Also in Kurdistan KRG blames PMF for drone attacks in Erbil Yazidi survivor says ISIS banned Kurdish language Erbil court issues warrant for ex-MP President Barzani worked for years to facilitate Ankara-PKK peace process: Spox A+ A- ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - A delegation from Turkey's pro-Kurdish party will attend an upcoming ceremony for the disarmament of a group of Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) fighters in Sulaimani province, a well-informed source told Rudaw on Saturday. 'At the end of this week or the beginning of next week, a DEM Party delegation will visit the Kurdistan Region' to attend the ceremony, a well-informed source from the party said. The Peoples' Equality and Democracy (DEM) Party is mediating peace talks between the PKK and the Turkish state. The delegation will go directly to Sulaimani province to participate in the ceremony, the source said, but did not name the members of the delegation. A group of PKK fighters will disarm in early July, launching the practical steps of implementing the group's decision to dissolve and end its armed struggle against Turkey. The PKK announced its dissolution in May, in response to a February call by its jailed leader Abdullah Ocalan to end the conflict that has claimed around 40,000 lives and pursue a political path to securing Kurdish political and cultural rights. While Turkey has welcomed the PKK's decision, it has emphasized the need for taking concrete steps towards total disarmament. Meanwhile, the PKK expects Ankara to introduce democratic reforms. The disarmament ceremony will take place in Sulaimani's Raparin administration, according to administration head Hiwa Qarani. The PKK fighters will destroy their weapons during the ceremony rather than hand them over to any other authority, Rudaw has learned. Founded in 1978, the PKK initially sought an independent Kurdish state but later shifted its focus toward achieving broader political and cultural rights for Kurds in Turkey. The group has been labeled a terrorist organization by Ankara and its allies. Soran Hussein contributed to this report.
