Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla said the Supreme Court is now investigating members of the judiciary amid allegations of case fixing.
The Supreme Court (SC) is now investigating members of the judiciary amid allegations of case fixing, Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla said Monday.
'Actually, iniimbestigahan na siya ng SC (SC is already investigating it),' Remulla said in an ambush interview.
He issued the remark when about allegations that a former judge allegedly helped fix cases for businessman Atong Ang, who was named by one of the accused as a mastermind in the disappearance of the sabungeros from 2021 to 2022.
However, when asked about who are being investigated, Remulla said 'iba-iba.'
GMA News Online has sought confirmation from the SC but has yet to receive a response as of posting time.
Remulla previously warned that the possible mastermind in the case of the missing cockfight enthusiasts or sabungeros may have the money to infiltrate even Philippine courts.
He had said he would talk with Chief Justice Alexander Gesmundo regarding this.
According to Remulla, he discussed the matter with a justice on Monday morning.
'Basta they're doing their job. Ano naman sila eh, hindi naman sila balat sibuyas eh. They're very sensitive about what should be done to improve our justice system,' he said.
(As long as they're doing their job. They're not overly sensitive or thin-skinned. They're very aware of what needs to be done to improve our justice system.)
'And that's what we've been agreeing on since we started three years ago with the Justice Sector Coordinating Council. Kaya we're always in agreement with regards to how to improve the justice system,' he added.
Last week, Patidongan named Ang as a mastermind in the case. He also linked actress Gretchen Barretto to the disappearance.
The two have denied the allegations against them, with Ang saying that Patidongan threatened to link him to the disappearance if he refused to pay P300 million while Barretto said she received a similar threat.—LDF, GMA Integrated News

Abante proclaimed as Manila 6th District representative

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) formally proclaimed Tuesday Benny Abante as the duly-elected representative of Manila's 6th district for Eleksyon 2025. The Comelec-Manila administered the proclamation in Ermita, a day after the poll body en banc issued a certificate of finality and entry of judgment on the disqualification of Joey Chua, nullifying his proclamation as the congressional winner in the city district, and clearing the way for Abante's proclamation. According to the Comelec en banc, the certificate was issued after their previous ruling that dismissed the motion for reconsideration filed by Uy against the June 18 resolution that voided his certificate of candidacy (COC) became final and executory after the Supreme Court (SC) did not issue a temporary restraining order (TRO) against the decision within the five-day reglementary period. 'The records show that no restraining order has been issued by the SC with five days from receipt of the parties of the Resolution that would preclude the June 30, 2025 resolution of this Commission (En Banc) from being final and executory,' the certificate of finality reads. 'Now therefore, in view of the foregoing, the Resolution of the Commission (En Banc) promulgated on 30 June 2025 is hereby declared immediately executory in accordance with the Comelec Rules of Procedure,' it added. On Facebook, Abante expressed gratitude to the poll body as he called for unity. "I have always believed that public service must rise above politics, and today, we recommit ourselves to serving our kababayan with humility, compassion, and integrity. Panahon na para tumutok sa taumbayan, para tugunan ang kanilang pangangailangan,' he said. 'It is time to set aside partisanship for the sake of our people—to restore focus and work together to deliver the services, opportunities, and justice our constituents deserve,' Abante added. — RSJ, GMA Integrated News For more Eleksyon 2025 related content and updates, visit GMA News Online's Eleksyon 2025 microsite.

Comelec-Manila sets Abante proclamation for July 8

The local Commission on Elections (Comelec) of Manila has set the proclamation of Benny Abante as the winner of the congressional race for the city's 6th district on Tuesday, July 8. According to a notice issued Monday, the local poll body office said the Manila board of canvassers (CBOC) will reconvene to proceed with Abante's proclamation. It will be held at the Office of the Election Officer in Ermita at 9 a.m. The Comelec en banc earlier issued a certificate of finality and entry of judgment on the disqualification of Joey Chua, nullifying his proclamation as Manila 6th District Representative for the May polls. The poll body, in the certificate, said their earlier decision junking the motion for reconsideration (MR) filed by Uy against the June 18 resolution that voided his certificate of candidacy (COC) became final and executory after the Supreme Court (SC) did not issue a temporary restraining order (TRO) against the ruling within the five-day reglementary period. Poll chief George Erwin Garcia previously said that based on Comelec rules, a local poll body office should first issue a notice of meeting of the BOC to inform all parties that they will convene and discuss the details for the proclamation. A subsequent notice to proclaim will also be issued thereafter. — BM, GMA Integrated News For more Eleksyon 2025 related content and updates, visit GMA News Online's Eleksyon 2025 microsite.
