Maya Hawke Reveals Hollywood Filmmaker Told Her She's 'Prettier With My Mouth Closed'
The 'Stranger Things' star has been acting for nearly a decade, and while she comes from famous pedigree — her parents are Oscar nominees Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke — she's 'comfortable' being a nepo baby, and found the note anything but helpful.
'A director told me — actually, I think was a producer, but they were in cahoots — told me I looked prettier with my mouth closed, and that I should close my mouth after I speak more often,' said Hawke during an episode of the 'Happy Sad Confused' podcast released Thursday.
Hawke is only 26 years old but studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London and the Stella Adler Studio in New York, and found the producer's suggestion particularly dense because she's long been attuned to what suits any given character she's playing.
Hawke said on the podcast that a lack of 'jaw tension' was integral to the role in question.
'I was playing a character that was distinctly un-self-conscious,' she added. 'That was a trait of the character, that they didn't care about looking pretty and they were un-self-conscious, and so it was clearly just a desire of the aesthetic of the thing, and I was annoyed about it.'
Hawke didn't mention the person by name, but she's worked on many well-known projects, including Wes Anderson's 'Asteroid City,' Bradley Cooper's 'Maestro,' Quentin Tarantino's 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood' and the Duffer Brothers' 'Stranger Things.'
Hawke, who was raised by celebrities and attended a private school in Brooklyn, does nonetheless seem grateful to lead a creative life — and even acknowledged last year that she's OK with 'not deserving' the Hollywood opportunities available to her.
''Deserves' is a complicated word,' she told the Sunday Times in June. 'There are so many people who deserve to have this kind of life who don't, but I think I'm comfortable with not deserving it and doing it anyway. And I know that my not doing it wouldn't help anyone.'
'I saw two paths when I was first starting, and one of them was: change your name, get a nose job and go to open casting roles,' Hawke continued at the time, adding: 'It's OK to be made fun of when you're in rarefied air. It's a lucky place to be.'

'House of the Dragon' season 3 will be 'goddamn huge,' showrunner teases
We're used to Westeros going big, but "House of the Dragon" season 3 will be "massive," per a new production update from series creator Ryan Condal. When the "Game of Thrones" prequel series returns on HBO and HBO Max sometime in 2026, viewers will be thrown in the middle of a massive civil war between two opposing factions inside House Targaryen: Team Black (the contingent that supports Rhaenyra Targaryen as heir to the crown) versus Team Green (those that back her half-brother Aegon II Targaryen's claim to the Iron Throne). With on-location filming officially wrapped in Wales (the production will now move to in-studio sets in the U.K.), Condal gave an anticipated update on season 3 during a July 2025 episode of his podcast "The Stuff Dreams Are Made Of" with co-host David Mandel. "We're right in the middle of production. We've wrapped Wales, we're moving on to some huge things now that we've got going at the studio and then other locations that we're working on, so we've moved into that part of the schedule," Condal shared. "It gets pretty nuts here through July and August. So I will be rushing off to set tomorrow to do the beginning of some insane things that we're doing this month." He continued, "But yeah, we're right in the middle in the thick of it, and it's going great. I mean, the season is just goddamn huge. "Every day I walk around there and look at the things that we're building and the things that we're doing and the number of costumes and extras and all that ... I knew it was bigger than season 2, but I don't think I realized quite how much." Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. The new episodes boasting a grander scale shouldn't come as a surprise to "House of the Dragon" fans, what with the impending succession war between Targaryen heirs Aegon and Rhaenyra all but guaranteeing plenty of big battle scenes and expensive CGI dragons. Condal also recently revealed to Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that the third season will see an experimental episode that will be more "conceptual" and "character-driven" installment than "HOTD" fans have seen from the HBO fantasy series so far. 'We got to have a little fun this season, and there's a conceptual episode that I'm really excited about that [Sara Hess] wrote, and that's all I'm gonna say about it," Condal revealed. "It isn't in the traditional vernacular of what we have laid out. It's very character-driven, I think it's really great and I'm really excited to see it rendered.' Ditto! Timothée Chalamet & James Mangold Motocross Heist Pitch Has Town Revving: The Dish
EXCLUSIVE: The Town is abuzz over High Side, a package based on an unpublished short story by Jaime Oliveira that looms as a potential reteam of Timothée Chalamet and James Mangold. They are just coming off A Complete Unknown, the Bob Dylan smash that got eight Oscar nominations. Chernin Entertainment is attached as producer. Sugar23, which reps Oliveira, is out to the town with the short story pitch package that also is making a buzz in publishing circles. In High Side, Billy is a former MotoGP racer, who is haunted by a career-ending crash and a family legacy of abandonment but is drawn back into the world of high-speed risks and extreme danger. His estranged brother, already being pursued by the FBI, recruits him for a series of bank robberies on superbikes. A gifted motocross rider, Billy walked away from the sport after a devastating accident, and he has been making do caring for his addict father and the family garage. He's blindsided when his estranged older brother Cole resurfaces — just after their father's death — with a proposition: use Billy's talents for something bigger: robbing banks. Cole assembles a mismatched crew, including a woman who becomes Billy's lover, and they begin knocking over small-town desert banks with speed and precision. But as the stakes rise, Lennox, an FBI agent who has a complicated history with Cole, closes in as the crew preps its biggest score: a bank job timed with a big motorcycle parade. There are high-speed action and emotional twists and turns in the climax. Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver Fighting in ‘Marriage Story' Is Being Used by the USDA to Scare Off Wolves and Save Cattle: ‘They Need to Know Humans Are Bad'
A new report from The Wall Street Journal reveals that audio of Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver screaming at each other in Noah Baumbach's 'Marriage Story' is being used by the United States Department of Agriculture to scare off wolves from killing cattle and scaring livestock on farms across the America. The fight scene is the most emotionally volatile moment in Baumbach's 2019 drama, which earned both Johansson and Driver Oscar nominations. Per the WSJ: 'Riding to the rescue are drone cowhands, whose quadcopters have thermal cameras that can reveal any wolf lurking in the darkness and bathe it in a spotlight. A loudspeaker broadcasts alarming sounds like fireworks, gunshots and people arguing. One recording is of the fight between Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver in the movie 'Marriage Story.'' 'Wolf hazing,' as the practice is called, also uses loud music like AC/DC's 'Thunderstruck' to scare off deadly wolves. The USDA has relied on drones because gray wolves had long been on the federal government's list of endangered species. The process seems to be working. As the WSJ reported: 'Drones were deployed in the Klamath Basin of southern Oregon after 11 cows were killed by wolves there in a 20-day period. Over the next 85 days when drones were on patrol, only two were killed.' 'Marriage Story' stars Johansson and Driver as a couple going through a bitter divorce and custody battle over their son. The movie earned critical acclaim after premiering at the 2019 Venice Film Festival. Variety's Owen Gleiberman named 'Marriage Story' the second best movie of 2019. 'Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson, in spectacular performances that work together with searing intimacy, enact the anger, pride, despair, and passion of a couple who tear their relationship apart, and their souls too, even as they both struggle to remain whole inside,' Gleiberman wrote. ''Marriage Story' tells the story of divorce in our time, and in doing so it earns a place next to those harrowing and heartrending texts of separation, 'Kramer vs. Kramer' and 'Scenes from a Marriage.''
