Jimenez netted for El Tri in the 50th minute of the game to secure the win and move into the summit clash, where they are set to take on the USA.
Defending champions Mexico claimed a 1-0 win over Honduras in the semifinal of the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2025 on Thursday at the Levi's Stadium in California, USA.
Raul Jimenez netted for El Tri in the 50th minute of the game to secure the win and move into the summit clash, where they are set to take on the USA.
'We had a deserved victory," Mexican head coach Javier Aguirre said following the triumph.
El Tri advanced to face the United States in the final on Sunday night in Houston, marking the eighth time the two countries will meet in the title game, with Mexico holding a 5-2 head-to-head advantage.
Mexico broke through early in the second half with a play initiated by Alexis Vega, who passed to Mora near the top of the box. Mora then slid a pass to Jiménez, who scored his 42nd career international goal with a right-footed shot past Edrick Menjivar.
Ranked No. 17, Mexico appeared to extend their lead a few minutes later when Edson Alvarez tapped in a goal from a set piece. However, it was disallowed after a video review determined he was offside.
Honduras reached this stage for the first time since 2013 despite a 6-0 loss to Canada in their tournament opener. The Hondurans haven't reached the final since the inaugural tournament in 1991 when they lost to the U.S. in a penalty shootout.
El Tri had two good opportunities late in the first half. Johan Vasquez's shot in the box deflected off Honduran defender Denil Maldonado and went straight into the hands of goalkeeper Menjivar.
Menjivar then made a sharp save against Marcel Ruiz in the 42nd minute, and Julián Martínez cleared the rebound out of danger.
A tense moment occurred in the 11th minute when a ball was played into the Mexico bench area. Romell Quioto aggressively tried to retrieve the ball for Honduras, which led to an altercation with Mexican reserve Guillermo Ochoa, resulting in a heated exchange among players from both teams and a yellow card for Ochoa.

Former Real Madrid Goalkeeper Keylor Navas Joins Pumas In Mexico

When former Real Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas got an offer to play in Mexico for UNAM Pumas, he knew who to ask for advice. The Costa Rica goalkeeper called his ex-Madrid teammate Sergio Ramos, as well as Costa Rica coach Miguel Herrera, before he eventually agreed to join Pumas in the top-tier Liga MX on a reported one-year contract. The move follows a six-month stint in Argentina with Newell's Old Boys. The 38-year-old Navas was introduced on Thursday as the Mexican side revamps its roster to try to end a 14-year spell without winning a league title. 'I'm here eager to give my all, to push myself, and to be on the pitch playing at my best,' Navas said. 'I have the mentality to make history, to be able to win a title. I believe we can achieve those goals by working with humility.' No details were given but Newell's Old Boys said it will receive $2 million as part of the deal. Navas and Ramos played together for five seasons with Madrid, winning three Champions League titles. The pair also joined forces at Paris Saint-Germain where they were part of the team that won the Ligue 1 title in 2022. The 39-year-old Ramos signed with Mexican team Monterrey earlier this year. 'Sergio told me a little about his experience in Mexico. I know James (Rodriguez) is also here and playing at a high level,' Navas said at a press conference. 'Liga MX is growing and is very competitive, with a very good infrastructure, and I thought I'd come to a club where we can compete for titles.' James Rodriguez, who played with Navas and Ramos for four seasons with Madrid, also plays in Mexico with Leon. Pumas had already bought Wales midfielder Aaron Ramsey, Colombian left back Alvaro Angulo and Ecuador midfielder Pedro Vite. Navas also called Herrera, who had coached six first division teams in Mexico before he was hired as coach of the Costa Rica men's national team as it attempts to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. 'I spoke with Miguel because he knows the league and the club well, and he told me I should sign without a doubt,' Navas said. 'I'm joining a big club, and having him in the national team helps you make these decisions.' Navas also made the decision to move closer to Central America because his national team has World Cup qualifying games, starting in September, with 'Los Ticos' in Group C with Honduras, Haiti and Nicaragua.

Former Man United Striker Chicharito Fined, Investigated For Sexist Remarks On Social Media

Last Updated: The Mexican Football Federation fined Javier "Chicharito" Hernández and launched an investigation after he posted videos promoting sexist stereotypes, sparking outrage. The Mexican Football Federation (FMF) has fined Javier 'Chicharito" Hernández and launched a formal investigation after the striker posted videos on social media that authorities say 'promote sexist stereotypes." In a joint statement issued Wednesday by the FMF, Liga MX, and Liga MX Femenil, officials said Hernández's comments violated the organizations' gender and diversity policies and constituted a form of media violence. Hernández, 37, shared videos on TikTok over the weekend in which he urged women to 'let themselves be guided by a man" and accused them of 'eradicating masculinity." He also criticized modern feminist perspectives and claimed society had become 'hypersensitive." The backlash was swift, with fans, public figures, and politicians condemning the remarks as outdated and sexist. 'He's a very good footballer, but in terms of his opinion about women, I think he still has a lot to learn, because women can be whatever we want to be," Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said during her daily press briefing on Wednesday. 'A few days ago on the social media platform TikTok, Hernández made statements that promote sexist stereotypes. These are considered media violence and are contrary to gender equality in sport," the statement read. 'The Gender and Diversity Commission has initiated an investigation to prevent and penalize such conduct. A financial fine and a warning have been imposed on Javier 'El Chicharito' Hernández, and the Commission will implement more severe measures in the event of a repeat offense." Club and League Distancing Themselves Chivas Guadalajara, Hernández's current club, also issued a statement distancing itself from his comments. 'The club has taken the appropriate measures in accordance with its internal regulations," said the Liga MX side. 'As an institution with a strong sense of social responsibility, we firmly reject any behavior, position, or expression that reinforces stereotypes which limit the freedom, respect, and full development of all individuals." Hernández, Mexico's all-time leading goalscorer, returned to his boyhood club Chivas in January 2024 after a career that included stints at Manchester United, West Ham United, Real Madrid, Sevilla, and LA Galaxy. Chicharito faces backlash in Mexico for 'very sexist' remarks on gender roles

Soccer star Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez is facing a backlash from Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum and others for remarks posted on his social media accounts about gender roles. 'Chicharito is a very good soccer player,' Ms. Sheinbaum said at a news conference Wednesday (July 23, 2025). 'But when it comes to his opinion on women ... he still has a lot to learn." She described the former Mexico international's ideas as 'very sexist.' The former Manchester United and Real Madrid striker, who plays for Chivas, is injured and missed the first two matches of Mexico's Apertura tournament. Over the weekend, he posted several reels and videos, mainly on Instagram. 'Don't be afraid to be women, to allow yourselves to be led by a man," the 37-year-old Hernandez said. 'Women, you are failing, you are eradicating masculinity, making society hypersensitive." Hernandez, the all-time leading scorer for the Mexican national team with 52 goals, returned to Mexico last year on a two-year deal with Chivas, the team where he began his professional career in 2006. 'You women need to learn to accept and honor masculinity,' he said in another one of his posts. In another, he said to the camera: 'You want a man to provide, but for you, cleaning is patriarchal oppression... interesting.' Sheinbaum, a 63-year-old scientist, was elected last year as the first female president in the country's 200-year history. 'I'm a mother, I'm a grandmother, I'm also a housewife,' the president added Wednesday. 'But I'm also the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces. Women can be whatever we want.' Hernandez is a divorced father of two who has a habit of kneeling in the middle of the pitch to pray before the start of matches. He began creating content for a YouTube channel where he portrayed his life as a player with West Ham and his marriage. Hernandez had a low profile on social media before hiring life coach Diego Dreyfus, to whom many attribute much of 'Chicharito's' new persona. Criticism followed his recent statements, with some urging him to limit himself to soccer, given that his performance since returning to the Mexican league last year has not been as expected. Hernandez, who also played for Bayer Leverkusen, West Ham and Sevilla, has scored just two goals in 25 matches in his first two tournaments back in Mexico. A few hours after the president's remarks, Hernandez was fined by the by the Gender and Diversity Commission of the Mexican Soccer Federation and by Chivas. 'A few days ago, on the social platform Javier Chicharito Hernández made statements that promote sexist stereotypes that are considered media violence and go against gender equality in the sport," a statement from the federation said. The federation did not disclose the amount of the fine but said that a more severe penalty awaits if he does it again. Chivas didn't mention Hernandez by name in announcing its fine, only saying that the team is against 'behavior that reinforces stereotypes that limit the freedom, respect, and full development of all people, both inside and outside of sports.' This is the first time that the federation has sanctioned a player for misogynistic comments. Earlier this year businessman Ricardo Salinas Pliego, the owner of the Mazatlán and Puebla clubs, made harsh statements about female journalists and was left unpunished. Chicharito has been banned from the national team since 2019 after he, alongside other players, organized a non-authorized party in New York after a game against the United States. (AP) ATK ATK
