EXCLUSIVE: Moods, a New Lifestyle Brand Is Adding Science to Aromatherapy
Gregory Allen and Daniel Smith, two former beauty executives, have come together to launch Moods, a lifestyle brand that wants to take the old-age holistic healing treatment into the modern world.

'We've basically taken the category — which has always had potential — and rebuilt it with clinical trials, precision blends and a modern brand sensibility. We wanted to merge scent and science for serious self care into a tangible healing therapy, hopefully helping customers with their mental health and mindset,' Allen said in a joint interview with Smith.
The brand's first launch is eight blends in the form of a mist or roller with each blend targeting a different state of mind.
'We needed to make the use of the MoodsRoller, our primary product, be part of a daily routine and available on hand when needed rather than something saved for a ritual,' Smith said.
The Moods include Charisma for confidence; Chill for stress; Hustle for focus; Genius for creativity and intelligence; Euphoric for joy; Fit for energy and recovery; Found for grounding, and Frisky for sensuality.
The brand commissioned Professor Mark Moss at the University of Northumbria's department of psychology to conduct its clinical research, which according to Moods is the 'largest aroma-focused clinical study to date.'
The study used the Charisma, Chill, Genius and Hustle blends on more than 400 participants testing mood, performance and emotional resilience.
According to the research, the Charisma blend reduces social anxiety by up to 30 percent; Chill helps lower blood pressure by 10 percent; Genius enhances memory and clarity by up to 15 percent, and Hustle improves concentration by 10 percent and cognitive processing by 5 percent.
Smith said he has been using aromatherapy in his daily life for 20 years in mostly baths and candles.
'I know essential oils make a difference to my mood — especially with stress, sleepiness and energy. That was the start of the concept really — the idea to perfect the use of oils in order to elevate your mood, but simplified, accessible and proven [scientifically],' he added.
Allen said that the market was saturated with products that were either 'anecdotal, or wrapped in really soft language. No one was treating aromatherapy like a serious therapeutic tool. We felt like the wellness world was ready for something that was natural and backed by science.'
A Moods roller is priced at 25 pounds, while a mist costs 45 pounds.
The brand has opened with a direct-to-consumer model, but a wholesale plan is in the works, as is opening in spas in London.
In financing Moods, Allen and Smith took a two-step process — they first raised between 50,000 to 100,000 pounds with personal and close investors upon the concept of the brand.
'This was vital as it allowed the step to putting together a solid brand identity, beginning the formulation process and refining the business plan. This allowed us to successfully secure a much larger investment that allowed us to invest in full products, a small but highly efficient team, great communications and launch activations,' Smith said.
In the first year of business, Moods is estimating 'single-digit multimillions in terms of revenue.'
Allen and Smith are also set on expanding Moods' categories into shower and bath essentials.
'There will also be some new innovations we haven't seen before. We get a little cheeky at the end of the year too,' Smith said.
Allen and Smith, who are partners in work and life, both come from beauty backgrounds.
Allen has held editorial positions within Glamour U.K. and Elle U.K. before pivoting to PR as a director at CGC Global, while Smith has worked in director roles at companies such as GHD, the Rodial Group and 111Skin.

Once written off as a bland diet food, cottage cheese has become a versatile dairy staple that's surged in popularity thanks to its creamy texture, high protein content and ability to pair well with both sweet and savory dishes. You'll find it piled on toast with fruit and honey at brunch spots, blended into smoothies at health cafes, scooped alongside tomatoes and crackers at summer barbecues and used as a healthier substitute for cream cheese, heavy cream, ricotta and sour cream. "People are incorporating cottage cheese into almost every recipe you can think of," says Kristen Smith, a registered dietitian nutritionist and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. But as trendy as it has become, is cottage cheese actually good for you? Here's what to know. What is cottage cheese? Cottage cheese is a fresh, unripened cheese known for its mild and tangy flavor and distinctive curds. It's made by curdling milk with an acid or enzyme, then "taking the solid parts of the milk (called curds) after they've been separated from the liquid part known as whey," explains Smith. Once this separation occurs, the curds are "drained, rinsed and seasoned with salt" before often being combined with a "creamy dressing" to create the signature texture we associate with cottage cheese, says Kristina Cooke, a California-based licensed nutritionist and registered dietitian. Its signature lumpiness can vary depending on how the curds are cut and processed. Some varieties feature small curds, while others offer large ones. And sometimes the mixture is whipped together, making a smoother product. No matter which variety you prefer, Cooke says that freshness is what sets cottage cheese apart from other cheeses like cheddar, mozzarella or brie. Aged cheeses undergo fermentation and drying processes that intensify flavor and extend shelf life, while cottage cheese has a higher moisture content and must be refrigerated to prevent spoilage. While this gives it a shorter shelf life, cottage cheese has the advantage of retaining more water-soluble nutrients and offering a lighter, more delicate flavor. Cheese has plenty of protein. But it's not 100% good for you. Is cottage cheese good for you? Cottage cheese has a lot to offer in terms of health benefits. "Cottage cheese is packed with protein, which helps your body build and fix tissue, keeps you feeling full and supports muscle growth," says Smith. Indeed, a 1/2-cup serving offers about 12 to 15 grams of protein – and with a tradeoff of less than 100 calories to boot. Its high protein content, along with being low in calories and carbs, "make cottage cheese an excellent option for people trying to lose weight, build muscle or manage conditions such as type 2 diabetes," says Shelley Rael, a registered dietitian and nutritionist based in Albuquerque, New Mexico. This is especially true when it's used as a nutritious substitute for less healthy ingredients, such as replacing mayonnaise in tuna salad, sour cream in dips or creamy dressings atop salads. Cottage cheese is also high in calcium and phosphorus, "which are key minerals for healthy bones, energy and DNA synthesis," says Cooke. And it's a good source of selenium – a powerful antioxidant linked to reduced inflammation and thyroid function; and vitamin B12 – a crucial nutrient for brain health and red blood cell production. "Some types of cottage cheese (those made with live, active cultures) can also give you a boost of probiotics – the good bacteria that help keep your gut healthy," adds Smith. Calcium is a vital part of your diet. Are you getting enough? Can you eat cottage cheese every day? While cottage cheese is a healthy food, it isn't ideal for everyone – or for every meal. One reason is that it contains fat and can be high in sodium. "Some cottage cheese brands can be moderate to high in saturated fat and sodium, which may pose a negative impact on heart health," says Cooke. Indeed, some commercial varieties contain over 400 milligrams of sodium per 1/2-cup serving – nearly 20% of the recommended daily intake. While everyone should monitor their sodium intake, people with high blood pressure or kidney disease need to be especially mindful. And its fat content "can raise your 'bad' LDL cholesterol and increase the chance of heart problems," says Smith. And as a dairy product, cottage cheese contains lactose. "This is a type of sugar that can be difficult for some people to digest," says Smith. Though it contains less lactose than milk, people with lactose intolerance may still experience bloating, cramping or digestive discomfort after eating the cheese. People with dairy allergies or certain autoimmune conditions may also want to steer clear of cottage cheese, notes Rael, as dairy proteins can trigger inflammation and other reactions in sensitive individuals. In the end, "cottage cheese is a great way to add protein to sweet or savory dishes without also adding excess calories or fat," says Cooke. "But if you have elevated cholesterol or blood pressure, consider low-sodium or non-fat options."

Colts RT Braden Smith 'in a spectacular place' after career-threatening battle with OCD
WESTFIELD, Ind. — Braden Smith has been looking forward to this training camp. To this season. A chance to experience the joy of football again, freed from the stranglehold obsessive-compulsive disorder placed on him last year. A specific type of OCD, religious scrupulosity, overwhelmed Smith last year, forcing him to leave the Colts with five games left in the season in a desperate attempt to find an answer for what was going through his mind. The search took Smith through therapy, medicine, a Colorado health clinic and finally a controversial treatment with psychedelics in Mexico, but the 29-year-old right tackle emerged on the other side last spring with his OCD under control. In his own words: Colts RT Braden Smith's desperate, life-threatening fight vs OCD A half a year later, Smith is back on the practice field at Grand Park, ready to enjoy football again after his battle with OCD caused him to briefly consider retirement last fall. 'I'm in a spectacular place, honestly,' Smith said. 'I've learned a lot about myself. I've learned different tools and strategies, I've had a great support system here and at home.' When Smith returned from an ibogaine treatment in Mexico that he believes erased the bad habits his mind had created — internal compulsions that caused him to repetitively pray, repent or declare his faith — he began intensive therapy for OCD. In Smith's own words, he still has OCD. But it no longer has a hold on him, no longer serves as a crushing weight on him at all times, forcing him to try to justify himself to a perfect God. 'There's not boxes I need to check off, there's not things I need to do,' Smith said. 'It's not perfect, but it's kind of allowed me to give it all to Him and not worry about what else can happen.' Smith, a Christian who was baptized last May after deciding to devote himself fully to his faith, has found better balance in his belief, a pursuit of God based on love rather than guilt. 'You have to find out what is healthy and what is not healthy. It looks a little bit different for every person,' Smith said. 'My relationship to God doesn't have to be a cookie-cutter type of thing. … Luckily, the whole point is just (having) a relationship.' Playing football again on the practice fields at Grand Park is a reminder of how far Smith has come since last winter. One of the statements that set off alarm bells for Courtney was when Smith floated the idea of retirement last September. Her husband has always loved playing football, loved playing the game, and the OCD had stripped football of the joy and fulfillment he felt playing the game. The Colts tried to help Smith. Instead of ignoring or downplaying his symptoms, the coaching staff helped Smith find treatment and medicine, allowed the veteran right tackle to avoid going to meetings when OCD began to overtake him and supported his decision to miss the rest of the season. The day before Thanksgiving, Smith showed up at the practice facility and headed right back home, the final piece of the puzzle that convinced Courtney to tell her husband he needed to leave his team and go to a mental-health facility in Colorado. Before he left, Smith told the rest of the offensive linemen and the coaches exactly what had been going on throughout the season, and the Colts responded by protecting and supporting the man who has been a pillar of the offensive line since 2018. Smith started 12 games and played 731 snaps last season. But he was far from the player he could be. 'Last year, I was just kind of out there,' Smith said. 'I was going through the motions, but I didn't feel that edge that players have. I didn't have that last year. I didn't feel that.' Smith hasn't been able to be himself in years. Before the scrupulosity took over Smith's life last year, he played through a painful knee injury in 2023, an injury that cost him seven games and ultimately forced him to undergo surgery on the joint. Physically, Smith feels better than he has in years. Mentally, it's possible that Smith feels better than he ever has before. When Smith first started going to therapy last fall, his psychologist told Courtney he could trace her husband's OCD back to at least the third grade, if not before that. For the first time, Smith believes he understands his OCD and has a handle on his condition. 'Instead of obsessing over other things, I can obsess about my craft,' Smith said. 'Turn a negative into the positive.' When Smith first talked about his battle with OCD in April, Courtney said she believed her husband could finally be the person he's meant to be. Half a year later, Smith has no reason to believe anything has changed since then. 'This is probably the best I've felt in a really long time,' Smith said. 'It's kind of nice to see everything come together. Now, I can just go play football.' For the love of the game alone.
