Kolkata rape case: Accused Monojit ‘Mango' Mishra makes shocking claim, says scratch marks on his body ‘love bites'
Talking to the news agency ANI, Mishra's lawyer, Raju Ganguly, claimed that Manojit told him that 'everyone is making him out to be a villain.'
When asked about scratch marks from nails on his body, and the one mark on his neck, the lawyer said that Monojit Mishra told him, 'It is a 'love bite'. When I asked him who gave him that, the police took him away.'
'I could not see any scratch marks from nails on him,' Ganguly said, adding that he could only see one mark, pointing at the neck.
Raju Ganguly demanded that the phone of the victim should also be seized and sent to the forensics.
'Call record should be brought before the court. After seeing the records, I feel that perhaps this is not a rape case,' the lawyer claimed.
'I have not come to a conclusion, I would be able to tell you by 20 July whether this is rape or not,' he added.
Following Monojit Mishra's arrest and the Kolkata gangrape case, more women of the South Calcutta Law College in Kasba have come forward to share chilling accounts of being sexually harassed by the accused.
One of the women, quoted by Anandabazar Patrika, has accused expelled TMCP leader Mishra of sexually harassing her during a college picnic in 2023.
'Alcohol arrangement was made under the supervision of Monojit. I went to a room to get my phone when I heard someone close the door. It was him. He was approaching me while opening his shirt buttons and was intoxicated to the extreme,' she told the newspaper.
The Kolkata Police have added six additional charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita against Mishra and his associates in the gangrape case following an investigation, as per a report by The Telegraph on July 1.

He alleged that there is 'collusion with criminals' in the ruling coalition. RJD, Congress and other opposition parties in Bihar have also slammed the NDA government over the murder of businessman Gopal Khemka in Patna. Speaking about the Rohingya issue, Nityanand Rai said they were 'given protection' by certain people and parties before, but the Centre has taken steps that 'no Rohingya enters the country'. Without naming any party, he said illegal immigration has been used by certain people to gain votes. 'I can't tell the total number (in Bihar) but I can definitely say that they are not coming in anymore. They have come in (earlier), have been given protection too. But now they don't have all that,' he said. Bihar will face assembly polls later this year. Political parties have geared up preparations for the elections. (ANI)

Uttarakhand CM Dhami orders crackdown against misuse of government welfare schemes
Dehradun (Uttarakhand) [India], July 5 (ANI): In a move to curb the misuse of public welfare schemes, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Saturday directed authorities to take stringent action against those fraudulently availing benefits. According to the instructions of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, two separate cases have been registered at Kotwali Nagar and Thana Rajpur in Dehradun. The crackdown began after the District Supply Officer and the Ayushman Department submitted complaints to the Senior Superintendent of Police, Dehradun. The complaints revealed that ration cards--intended only for individuals with an annual income below Rs 5 lakh--were being obtained by ineligible persons using fake documents. A subsequent investigation by the Supply Department confirmed that many such ration cards were indeed fraudulent. These were then used to create Ayushman health cards, allowing individuals to access government-funded healthcare services improperly. Acting swiftly, the police have launched detailed investigations into both FIRs. Authorities are in the process of identifying all individuals who secured benefits using forged documents, with Chief Minister Dhami reiterating that no one found guilty will be spared. Earlier in the day, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Dhami flagged off the first group of pilgrims for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra from Tanakpur, marking the official commencement of the sacred journey. The group of devotees arrived in Tanakpur on Friday night and was welcomed by the Chief Minister at the Tourist Rest House (TRC). He personally interacted with the pilgrims before sending them off with best wishes. While speaking to ANI, CM Dhami said, 'The group for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra has moved forward from its main stop, Tanakpur. The group of devotees arrived here last night... All arrangements have been made to ensure the safety of the pilgrims, a smooth journey, and no inconveniences.' Highlighting the challenges of the yatra, CM Dhami stated that the route remains vulnerable to landslides and harsh weather conditions, but the state government and associated corporations have ensured that all necessary support is in place. 'This is an extremely challenging journey, with persistent weather conditions and routes prone to landslides, but despite that, all facilities have been provided by our state corporation... The atmosphere is very enthusiastic. All the pilgrims are full of zeal... I wish everyone a successful journey,' the CM added. On June 20, after a five-year gap, the revered Kailash Mansarovar Yatra through Sikkim recommenced with the ceremonial flagging off of the first batch of pilgrims by Sikkim Governor Om Prakash Mathur from the Nathula Pass. The batch comprises 33 pilgrims, accompanied by two nodal officers and one doctor from the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), making a total of 36 members. Nehal Modi tampered with evidence, intimidated witnesses in Nirav Modi case: Officials
By Rajnish Singh New Delhi, [India], July 5 (ANI): Nehal Deepak Modi, the brother of fugitive diamantaire Nirav Modi, allegedly played a crucial role in laundering proceeds of crime in the high-profile Rs 13,000 crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud case as well as actively involved in the 'disappearance and concealment of assets' and 'destruction of evidence', officials said on Saturday. The revelation comes after Nehal Modi was arrested in the United States on the basis of an extradition request made by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED). The United States Department of Justice informed Indian authorities that Nehal Modi was arrested by United States authorities on July 4, 2025. Officials, aware of the facts of the case, told ANI that Nehal Modi has 'knowingly and intentionally participated in assisting the activity of concealment of proceeds of crime, destroying the evidence' in the multi-billion-dollar PNB fraud case-- one of the largest banking scams in the country's history - with his brother Nirav Modi. 'Nehal Modi was personally overseeing that all the accounts and records were eliminated and was influencing the employees and participated in destroying the evidence in respect of the money trail,' officials said. According to officials, Nehal Modi also 'dealt with proceeds of crime by taking 50 kg gold from Firestar Diamond FZE, Dubai after the initiation of investigation in this fraud.' Nirav Modi's brother is also accused of participating in assisting the activity of money laundering as defined under Section 3 of PMLA, 2002, and is liable for punishment under Section 4 of PMLA, 2002, said the officials. After the case broke out, investigators said Nehal Modi 'dealt with the Proceeds of crime in respect of the Nirav Modi case and taken away diamonds having value USD 6 million and 150 boxes of pearls from Hong Kong and cash of AED 3.5 million and 50 kg Gold from Dubai.' He allegedly carried out these actions in collusion with Mihir Bhansali, another key co-conspirator in the case. In a major attempt to sabotage the investigation, Nehal Modi is also accused of 'destroying digital evidence, including mobile phones and servers, linked to the Nirav Modi case while in Dubai.' Furthermore, officials said, 'Nehal Modi allegedly intimidated witnesses and orchestrated their transfer to Cairo, where their passports were confiscated under his instructions.' Officials reveal that 'in Cairo, the witnesses were coerced into signing false documents.' In a particularly alarming incident, Nehal Modi is said to have 'offered INR 2 million to a witness in exchange for delivering a false testimony before European judicial authorities.' The revelations have added a new dimension to the ongoing probe, further tightening the legal net around the Nirav Modi money laundering and fraud case, which has global ramifications. The arrest of Nehal Modi has been made pursuant to an extradition request jointly submitted by the ED and the CBI. As per the complaint filed by the U.S. prosecution, extradition proceedings are being pursued on two counts: one count of money laundering under Section 3 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002, and one count of criminal conspiracy under Sections 120-B and 201 of the Indian Penal Code. Nehal Modi is wanted in India in connection with the Rs 13,000 crore PNB fraud case. Investigations by the Enforcement Directorate and Central Bureau of Investigation have revealed that Nehal Modi played a key role in laundering proceeds of crime on behalf of Nirav Modi, who is also facing extradition from the UK. 'He is alleged to have assisted in concealing and transferring large sums of illicit funds through a web of shell companies and overseas transactions, in violation of Indian laws.' The next hearing date in the extradition proceedings is scheduled for July 17, 2025, when a status conference will be held. Officials further said that Nehal Modi may apply for bail during this hearing, which the U.S. prosecution has stated it will oppose. (ANI)
