‘Dan Da Dan' Season 1 Blu-Ray Review: Joyous Irreverent Madness

Forbes21 hours ago
The hectic fever dream of the anime adaptation of Dan Da Dan is anime at its unhinged best.
The premise of the manga and subsequently this anime version has a schoolgirl, Momo Ayase, challenge the nerdy Ken Takekura, not that one, but I'll get to that later, that there are no such things as UFOs and aliens.
Ken slaps back that there's nothing true about ghosts or the supernatural, which Momo, due to her fortune-telling grandma, firmly believes in.
The added twist is that neither party, despite believing the opposite of the other, has actually had any firsthand experience with what they claim to believe in.
As a result, Ken goes to a famous haunted tunnel at night, and Momo goes to a building that supposedly has lots of alien abductions.
Naturally, while bickering on the phone with each other, both encounter not only ghosts that curse people but also aliens trying to rebuild their race by abducting Earth women.
This is where Dan Da Dan does not care about offending anyone, as its approach to these matters is entirely irreverent and very funny.
Also, the fact that Ken gets cursed by a crazy old ghost actually helps Momo in her alien abduction predicament, with Momo's newfound spiritual abilities helping to curb Ken's curse.
'Dan Da Dan' is a fun and really quite crazy anime.
Which brings me onto the whole dynamic between these two. At the start of the first episode, Momo gets dumped and complains that men aren't manly enough. She also has a soft spot for the actor Ken Takekura, and feels that he is her ideal man.
So this whole almost symbiotic relationship between the two is made all the more hilarious when the nerdy kid also has the same name as her heartthrob actor. The result of the latter is that she ends up calling him 'Okarun' because he's a nerdy otaku and doesn't really want to admit that he may be her ideal partner.
The icing on the cake for all of this is that Science Saru has really delivered in terms of the animation. I still have a great deal of affection for the studio after Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken, but the action sequences in Dan Da Dan are something else entirely.
So, having the first season come to Blu-ray is definitely welcome. Not least because the visuals are delivered in a thoroughly pristine way, but the audio hits hard too. You also get some nice extras on the disc, from interviews and the like.
The Collector's Edition also comes with a nice 32-page booklet, some art cards, and a sticker. It also all comes in a solid box with nice artwork.
Overall, Dan Da Dan is a fun send-up of UFO and supernatural pop-culture, and also cements that with likeable leads. Some of it is pretty racy in places, but it never feels gratuitous, just very silly. In any case, Science Saru has done a great job here, and this Blu-ray set is certainly a tribute to that.
Dan Da Dan Season 1 Collector's Edition Blu-ray is available from the GKIDS online store for $49.99

Like a sudden meteor shower: F4 makes surprise reunion at Mayday concert, delighting fans (VIDEO)

TAIPEI, July 13 — Concertgoers at Taiwanese group Mayday's concert last night got a surprise bonus: an appearance of the group F4, singing their most famous hit Meteor Rain. ET Today reported that last night was Mayday's Taipei Arena stop and it also became the first time F4 had reunited in 12 years. More than 40,000 fans were treated to this unexpected show. The last time the F4 members had appeared together was China's 2013 Spring Festival Gala. Mayday had apparently attempted to invite the group as guests two years ago, but busy schedules prevented it from happening. Besides Meteor Shower, F4 and Mayday also performed the latter's The Song of Laughter and Forgetting. After the overwhelming social media response from delighted fans, perhaps the F4 members will be motivated to make it happen. F4's Jerry Yan, Vanness Wu, Ken Chu and Vic Chou were a boyband consisting of the lead actors from the popular Taiwanese TV drama series Meteor Garden that also helped launch the career of the late Barbie Hsu. The show was a hit across Asia and heralded the beginning of idol drama shows.

Taiwanese boy band F4 thrills fans with surprise reunion

Taiwanese boy band F4 sprung a surprise reunion on fans at rock band Mayday's concert in Taiwan on Saturday. The quartet's performance of their ballad Meteor Rain sparked a wave of nostalgia at the Taipei Arena, and sent many among the 40,000 concertgoers singing along. Meteor Rain was the theme song to the 2001 popular TV drama Meteor Garden, which starred F4's Jerry Yan, Vanness Wu, Vic Chou, and Ken Chu, and catapulted them to stardom. The series, which was based on the Japanese manga series Boys Over Flowers, captured the hearts of millions across Asia and popularised the "idol drama" genre. Meteor Garden also starred Barbie Hsu, who died from pneumonia in February. Its storyline centres around a girl from a working-class family, played by Hsu, who goes to school with four rich and arrogant boys known as the F4, short for Flower 4. The series' success spawned other Asian adaptations, including Japan's Hana Yori Dango in 2005, South Korea's Boys Over Flowers in 2009, China's Meteor Garden in 2008 and F4 Thailand: Boys Over Flowers in 2021. The boy band F4, which formed around the same time the Taiwanese series debuted, disbanded in 2009, but came together four years later for a one-off performance during Chinese TV network Jiangsu's Spring Festival Gala. Mayday's frontman Ashin, whose real name is Chen Hsin-hung, said it took his band years to get all four F4 members together again. "Everyone overcame a lot of obstacles to make this picture a reality," Ashin said on Saturday. Mayday, which was formed in 1997, is one of the most popular bands in the Chinese-speaking world - at one point being described as the "Beatles of Asia" by the music press. Their success has also seem them compared to the likes of Coldplay and Maroon 5. At Saturday's concert, F4 also performed Mayday's The Song of Laughter and Forgetting with the rock group. F4's Yan thanked Mayday for its "amazing effort" in reuniting his former band mates. "This is something I could not have imagined would happen again in my lifetime. It's also made us reminisce about our youth," said Yan, now 48. "I am very grateful to everyone who are here to share a beautiful evening with us," said bandmate Wu, 46. All four band members are in their 40s and are still active in the entertainment industry. Fans were ecstatic about the reunion, with many calling for the band to hold their own concert. "OMG!! Thank you Mayday !! My childhood is alive. It's crazy seeing [F4] perform again," read one comment on X. "Are you crying already... because we are! Hello to the inner child in you jumping up and down because #F4 just reunited! Tour soon? We hope!" Sound Check Manila, whose account curates music events in the Philippine capital, also wrote on X. Taiwan's Mirror Media earlier reported that F4 would hold a a concert next year, marking 25 years since their debut. This has not been verified by the artists or their agents.

Digital Domain Supports with DMD Teen 'Tszkin' by Creating a Personalized AI Virtual Human to Help Achieve His Dreams

Leveraging advanced technology to create a virtual human, Overcoming limitations, and Transforming constraints into possibilities HONG KONG, July 14, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- The applications of AI virtual human technology are rapidly expanding, demonstrating its value in social good and human-centered care, especially in providing emotional companionship and supporting the continuation of dreams and legacies. Digital Domain Holdings Limited (the "Company"; stock code: 547) is supporting Tszkin Chen, a 16-year-old teen living with a rare disease, in creating his personalized AI virtual human. By leveraging decades of Visual Effects (VFX) expertise with advanced technology, Digital Domain has recreated Tszkin's appearance and voice, supporting his dreams to inspire others and amplifying his impact to give back to society through a virtual presence. Sharing His Life Journey Through Another Self to Inspire Others Tszkin was diagnosed at the age of one and a half with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), a rare disease, and he has relied on a wheelchair for mobility since age 9. Now at 16, he continues to face life with courage, supported by the constant care of his mother, Ms. Michelle Li, and his friends. He has not only pushed his own limits by completing various challenges on land, in the sea, and in the air, but has also taken part in numerous activities. Through his YouTube channel, "snail tszkin," and social media platforms, he dedicates himself to sharing his life experiences with the rare disease community and spreading positivity to inspire others within his limited lifetime. Both the technology and applications of AI virtual humans were new to Tszkin and his mother at first. Through the support and referral of Dr. Eve Wong, the social worker in charge of the "Dreams*2Gather" programme, Tszkin and his mother came across the concept of AI virtual humans and hoped to explore its possibilities to carry on his will and dreams. To support their aspiration, Digital Domain is creating a personalized AI virtual human to empower Tszkin to share his life journey, raise awareness of rare diseases, and inspire others facing similar challenges. "The advancement of AI virtual human technology today not only enables the creation of another me, but also helps turn limitations into possibilities and let me pursue even more of my dreams," said Tszkin. "I imagine being able to talk to a version of myself that can walk and run, and take 'him' to different places to share my story and present him as a role model to bring encouragement and hope to more people. One day, my AI virtual human could even carry on my beliefs, and continue doing meaningful things to give back to society." Leveraging VFX Experience and AI Technology to Recreate a Lifelike Appearance With over 30 years of experience in VFX, Digital Domain has combined its expertise in creating photorealistic human faces with advanced 3D scanning technology. This enables the precise capture and recreation of Tszkin's facial features and expressions. Additionally, Digital Domain incorporates an AI brain, along with voice cloning and speech synthesis technologies, to develop the AI virtual human of Tszkin, which is powered by Momentum Cloud, Digital Domain's real-time control system for virtual humans. The production team photographed Tszkin from multiple angles to capture facial features, expressions, and every detail. Experiencing the process for the first time, both Tszkin and his mother were amazed by the complexity involved in creating a virtual human. The more detailed the steps, the more lifelike the result. Ms. Michelle Li recalled her emotional reaction when she first saw the 3D model of Tszkin's virtual human. "The AI virtual human of Tszkin felt so real, it was like seeing a dream come to life. It looked exactly like the Tszkin I see in my eyes," she said. "We are thrilled to have the opportunity to explore this new technology. Tszkin and I hope that the AI virtual human can help present life education and related information in a more approachable way, while also offering emotional and spiritual support to people living with rare diseases or disabilities. As new technologies become part of everyday life, AI virtual humans could help people better understand them sooner. We believe that society can benefit from companion-like figures like this, which offer positive information and inspiration." From Cared-for to Caregiver: AI Virtual Human Opens New Possibilities Beyond technological advancement, AI virtual humans can preserve precious memories and emotional bonds. With familiar faces and voices, they have the potential to bring comfort and companionship, helping friends and family keep their memory alive in a meaningful way. Ms. Michelle Li believes that being able to say goodbye or have conversations with deceased loved ones through an AI virtual human offers positive emotional benefits. "Expressing and releasing emotions through an AI virtual human can be somewhat healing. Some might think it prolongs the grieving process, but ultimately, it depends on how we choose to understand and engage with the technology," she explained. Tszkin, who uses the AI virtual human to help express his beliefs and continue pursuing his dreams, also thinks it can provide emotional comfort to his mother. "My mom has worked so hard to care for me over the years. Now, through the AI virtual human, I can shift from being the one cared for to being a caregiver who supports and accompanies my mom. Being able to give back in this way means a lot to me." He mentioned that Dr. Eve Wong was introduced to AI technology in their previous projects, which led her to think more deeply about how AI could help achieve more, such as turning a finite life into something with infinite meaning and helping more people. "This inspired my mom and me to explore the idea of creating an AI virtual human, and we are truly grateful to Dr. Wong and Digital Domain for their support in making this dream come true," he said. Mr. William Wong, Chief Executive Officer of Digital Domain, stated: "Through advanced AI and virtual human technology, we hope to help more life stories continue and be told in different forms. Creating this personalized AI virtual human for Tszkin is more than just a technological breakthrough, it embodies the principle that technology should serve humanity, reflecting the warmth and care of a human-centered approach. We are truly honored to be part of this journey, supporting Tszkin as he continues to create endless possibilities for his dreams and also advances the positive and diverse uses of technology for social good."
