AIADMK nod to panel conditions led to property tax hike, says TN minister Nehru
Nehru was responding to a statement from former Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami condemning the DMK government for its decision to increase property taxes in village panchayats across the state from the financial year 2025-26.
Taking a dig at CM Stalin, Palaniswami said unlike former Chief Minister MG Ramachandran, who offered free electricity to huts, the Stalin-led government has been burdening the rural poor further with steep tax hikes.
Nehru, in his response, said Palaniswami had agreed to link property tax revisions with the Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) during his tenure, which has now resulted in the present system of annual hikes.
'Out of selfish motives, Palaniswami signed the condition laid down by the finance commission and that decision has led to the current situation,' Nehru said.
He also warned failure to adhere to this condition could result in the Union Government withholding grants worth `4,36,361 crore meant for urban local bodies for the period 2021-26, along with funds under the Swachh Bharat and AMRUT 2.0 schemes.
Palaniswami, in his statement, had said the Stalin-led DMK government has already increased property taxes more than twice in municipalities and municipal corporations since coming to power in 2021. Now, he alleged, the government has extended this burden to rural areas.

I am the Leader of the Opposition; it is my right, but I am never allowed to speak." "Of course, there will be a discussion; if they allow it, then it will happen. But the issue is that convention says if the government's members speak, then we should also be given space. We just wanted to say a few words, but the Opposition is not being allowed to do so," he added. Earlier in the day, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh assured the House that the government is fully prepared for a detailed debate on matters of national security, including the Pahalgam attack. "I assure the parliamentarians that whatever discussion they want on security matters, no matter how long, we are completely ready to participate, whenever the Speaker allots time," Singh said, responding to Opposition MPs questioning Prime Minister Narendra Modi's absence from the House when they want to discuss the Pahalgam terror attack. However, the Opposition continued to create a ruckus in the House.

Currently, this business operates under Reliance Retail, but soon it will function as an independent unit within the broader Reliance Industries umbrella. During the Q1 FY2025 earnings conference call, it was confirmed that the FMCG vertical of Reliance Retail will be demerged and launched as a standalone company. Reliance Retail Growth Dinesh Taluja, CFO and Head of Corporate Development at Reliance Retail, said the company witnessed 11% year-on-year growth in Q1. Both the grocery and fashion segments performed strongly, while consumer electronics saw some slowdown due to an early monsoon. He stated that Reliance has a well-diversified portfolio in multiple categories which gives stable performance. During this quarter, Reliance opened 388 new stores, taking the total store count to over 19,600. Additionally, the company recorded a 16% YoY rise in customer transactions. The FMCG division saw big momentum, with Q1 revenue reaching Rs 4,400 crore, nearly double compared to the same period last year. Reliance Retail Sales Reliance noted that nearly 70% of its FMCG sales come from general trade, i.e., small neighborhood stores. While Reliance operates its own retail outlets (both B2C and B2B), it has also developed a nationwide distribution network to ensure product availability across regions. During this year's IPL, Reliance launched an ad campaign for its Campa Cola brand which gave good results. The company thinks this will also give stronger future sales for Campa and other products. Reliance is also setting up new factories and R&D labs across India. These facilities will incorporate automation and advanced technologies to ensure high-quality products at affordable prices. The goal is to make consumer products that are both appealing and economical. Reliance Retail New FMCG Brand The company stated that while its FMCG and retail businesses currently function distinctly, the demerger will formalize this separation. Both businesses will operate separately with professional independence. The new FMCG company will soon operate under the name 'Reliance Consumer Products Limited (RCPL),' housing brands like Campa Cola.

Kerala CM rejects corruption claims at Digital University, defends transparency
Thiruvananthapuram, Jul 21 (PTI) Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Monday strongly denied allegations of corruption at the state-run Digital University, calling the claims made by Leader of Opposition V D Satheesan 'factually incorrect" and 'misleading". Satheesan, in a letter sent to the Chief Minister on July 12, had called for a vigilance probe into what he described as financial fraud, misuse of power, and illegal project handling at the prestigious university. The leader of Congress-led UDF also alleged that shell companies formed by faculty members were being used to divert university projects and funds. The Digital University operates under the state's IT department, with the Chief Minister himself serving as its Pro-Chancellor — a fact Satheesan highlighted while calling for accountability. He also claimed that the lack of auditing since the university's inception had opened the door to corruption. Responding in writing, Vijayan dismissed the allegations, stating that a statutory audit has been completed up to the 2023–24 financial year and that the university has formally requested the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) to carry out further audits. The next steps are now pending with the CAG, he said. Refuting claims that advance payments were made illegally to the I-GEIC organisation, the CM called the accusation 'baseless." He questioned the logic behind labelling it a 'fraudulent organisation" and pointed out that the company's board includes respected names such as Madhavan Nambiar, a former Civil Aviation Secretary to the Government of India, and others with links to Tata Steel and leading academic institutions. Vijayan defended the university's practice of encouraging faculty-led innovation and entrepreneurship, stating that its regulations allow faculty members to form non-profit entities for research and development. He added that such project-based activities are also a means of securing salaries and operational funds, as part of a modern, self-sustaining university model.
