Kerala CM rejects corruption claims at Digital University, defends transparency
Satheesan, in a letter sent to the Chief Minister on July 12, had called for a vigilance probe into what he described as financial fraud, misuse of power, and illegal project handling at the prestigious university.
The leader of Congress-led UDF also alleged that shell companies formed by faculty members were being used to divert university projects and funds.
The Digital University operates under the state's IT department, with the Chief Minister himself serving as its Pro-Chancellor — a fact Satheesan highlighted while calling for accountability.
He also claimed that the lack of auditing since the university's inception had opened the door to corruption.
Responding in writing, Vijayan dismissed the allegations, stating that a statutory audit has been completed up to the 2023–24 financial year and that the university has formally requested the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) to carry out further audits.
The next steps are now pending with the CAG, he said.
Refuting claims that advance payments were made illegally to the I-GEIC organisation, the CM called the accusation 'baseless." He questioned the logic behind labelling it a 'fraudulent organisation" and pointed out that the company's board includes respected names such as Madhavan Nambiar, a former Civil Aviation Secretary to the Government of India, and others with links to Tata Steel and leading academic institutions.
Vijayan defended the university's practice of encouraging faculty-led innovation and entrepreneurship, stating that its regulations allow faculty members to form non-profit entities for research and development.
He added that such project-based activities are also a means of securing salaries and operational funds, as part of a modern, self-sustaining university model.
The CM concluded by suggesting that portraying these approved projects as corruption was a deliberate attempt to discredit the university and mislead the public. PTI TGB TGB ROH

Cong demands compensation for farmers affected by heavy rains in Gwalior-chambal
Bhopal: The Congress state unit on Tuesday demanded compensation for farmers who have faced crop damage due to excessive rains. Party media department president Mukesh Nayak expressed deep concern over the heavy devastation caused by continuous and excessive rains in Dabra, Bhind, Shivpuri, Karera, and Datia districts of Gwalior-Chambal division. Nayak said heavy rains have caused extensive damage to crops in more than 200 villages of these five districts including Sevdha, Bhander, and Datia development blocks. "The families whose houses have been destroyed should be provided rehabilitation and relief camp facilities. The affected farmers should be provided loan waiver and assistance for the next crop," Nayak said.

Had no info about Congress' J&K statehood protest: Omar Abdullah
Jammu and Kashmir CM Omar Abdullah on Tuesday said the Congress did not raise the issue of restoration of statehood at the recent INDIA bloc meeting . He said the Congress, which is in alliance with the NC-led government in J&K, did not inform them about the recent protest demanding restoration of statehood. "Nobody spoke to us (on the protests demanding statehood). ITAT rejects Congress appeal against tax demand of Rs 199 cr
The Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT) Monday dismissed an appeal filed by Congress challenging a tax demand of ₹199.15 crore for assessment year 2018-19. The tribunal rejected the party's claim for tax exemption under Section 13A due to late return filing and violations of cash donation limits, establishing strict compliance requirements for political parties seeking tax benefits. "All these assessee's (Congress) vehement submissions fail to evoke our concurrence," ruled the quorum of judicial member Satbeer Singh Godara and accountant member M Balaganesh. Referring to a leading Supreme Court judgment and a March 2016 high court ruling, the tribunal in its July 21 ruling held that an exemption mentioned in a tax statute must be "strictly complied with". The 50 page ITAT order referring to the two rulings (SC and HC) said "this is for the precise reason that so far as an interpretation of such an exemption provision in a fiscal statute is concerned", not only the high court has made it clear "that Section 13A has to be strictly complied with" but also the Supreme Court in a 2018 ruling "has settled the issue that it is not liberal but stricter interpretation only in a taxing statute which has to be employed in an exemption claim". Live Events Dismissing Congress's appeal, the tribunal held "that being the case and in light of the fact that even Section 139(4B) has stipulated filing of return within the 'due' date i.e. required to be furnished u/s 139(1), we are of the considered view that the above former clause in fact restricts any further liberalism herein as clearly incorporating the expression of 'due' date". "Therefore, the moment there is violation of such a 'due' date, Section 13A third proviso gets attracted, so as to result in denial of exemption to the party concerned," the order said.
