Ed Sheeran breaks obsession with stats as Shape of You tops Apple Music Top 500 most-streamed songs
His mate Taylor Swift once called him a 'chart monger' because of his obsession with the music industry's numbers game.
It was well known at his record label branches around the world that the pop superstar kept tabs on the performance of each new release in every market.
Sheeran looked surprised when informed on the Zane Lowe Show on Apple Music 1 that Shape of You was the biggest song on the platform, which marked its 10th year with the epic countdown.
The songwriter thought it was The Weeknd's Blinding Lights.
That track is No.1 on rival streamer Spotify with almost five billion plays, with Sheeran's song at No.2 with almost 4.5 billion hits.
Apple Music does not publicly disclose their streaming numbers and Sheeran said not knowing 'keeps most artists sane.'
'I actually think that that's the way that it should be. I think numbers ruin (the) joy of music,' Sheeran said in his interview with Lowe.
'Some of my favourite albums on the other streaming service haven't got like many tens of millions of streams, but they're still my favourite albums.
'And for some reason you look at that and you go, 'Oh, it must not have done well.''
He claims to have broken his obsession with music stats when he released his Subtract album in 2023.
But he knows artists can't help themselves keeping up to date with their latest sales and streaming numbers.
Sheeran said the 'math' of the music business used to drive his career but no more.
'It definitely used to ... because I was never good at anything, I got mildly obsessed with it when I was like 'This is working for me!' But I think I've kind of gone full circle,' he told Lowe.
'I think releasing Subtract broke me out of it and I can now look back at all of it and be like that was a part of my life. Anyone that says that they haven't ever felt like that is lying.
'Everyone, even the most indie artists, they all want at some point to have a moment like that, of (big) numbers. It is a thing that everyone at some point in their life craves.'
Apple Music's top 500 once again highlights how streaming algorithms have strangled Aussie music over the past decade with just 13 songs by our artists making the countdown.
It is estimated just one per cent of the world's biggest pop and hip hop superstars generate 80 to 90 per cent of total streams.
Our top entry was the Kid Laroi with his Justin Bieber collaboration Stay at No.14, closely followed by Tones and I's stayer Dance Monkey at No.16.
Next in was Vance Joy and the indefatigable Riptide at No.185.
Homegrown rock heroes AC/DC made their first appearance in the countdown at No.245 with Thunderstruck and then again at No.308 with Back in Black.
Sia also enjoyed multiple entries with Cheap Thrills (feat. Sean Paul) at No.359, Titanium with David Guetta (No.390) and Chandelier (No.451).
The other Aussie songs to make the top 500 are Be Alright by Dean Lewis (No.282), Youngblood by 5 Seconds of Summer (No.311), Gotye and Kimbra's Somebody That I Used to Know (No. 416), The Less I Know The Better by Tame Impala (No. 463) and Astronaut In The Ocean by Masked Wolf(No.465).

Prince Harry brutally mocked in iconic UK puppet show: No ‘discernible talent'
South Park 2.0? Prince Harry has been mercilessly mocked by the iconic UK puppet show Spitting Image as it took aim at the duke's life in California. The Duke of Sussex, 40, is no stranger to being roasted on TV — having previously been the subject of an infamous South Park episode that ripped apart the Sussexes for their 'Worldwide Privacy Tour.' Now, as the irreverent comedy show gears up to return to screens after a year-long hiatus, Spitting Image: The Rest Is Bulls*!t marked its return by poking fun at the Spare author in its first episode. In the clip, the Invictus Games founder is savaged as having no 'discernible talent' with a hideous puppet taunting the duke's appearance. The puppet, which is used to depict the exiled royal, is featured prominently in the 11-minute teaser clip shared on YouTube. The episode sees Harry host a podcast, titled 'The Rest is Bullsh*t,' alongside a puppet of Paddington Bear. 'I'm Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex. Just a regular guy with a title who's fifth in line to the throne,' the duke's puppet introduces himself in the episode. He explains that he got into podcasting because he has no other 'discernible talent.' After praising Elon Musk for 'the way you've cut the American government down to size,' Harry's puppet quips, 'I'm trying to do the same with my family!' His life in sunny Montecito, California, was also the subject of various digs during the episode — though Harry's wife, Meghan Markle, did not appear. At one point, the show poked fun at Harry's invented butler making him breakfast each morning. 'Nutrition is important. So Perkins makes me a bacon sandwich in case Meghan has made another one of her rank smoothies,' his puppet says in the clip. Another jab at the duke saw him admit to taking a 'session with my accountability coach.' 'I think it's important to be honest and transparent. I haven't told Megs about it yet,' the puppet said in the episode. The show also referenced Harry's bombshell BBC interview in which the duke moaned that his father, King Charles, would no longer speak to him. At the end of the episode, Harry's puppet is heard asking on the phone, 'Speak directly to me daddy, please?' The Post has reached out to Harry's reps for comment. Spitting Image: The Rest Is Bulls*!t is the latest instalment of the hit show, which originally ran from 1984 to 1996. Led by British comedians Al Murray and Matt Forde, the new series promises to deliver 'a no-holds-barred, up-to-the-minute assault on the world of politics, pop culture and media control.' The Sussexes were brutally teased in a 2023 South Park episode over their decision to move across the pond in a desperate bid for privacy.

‘This is shocking': Iconic rock star quits band
Pearl Jam is down a member. The band announced Monday that drummer Matt Cameron is leaving the group. 'After 27 fantastic years, I have taken my final steps down the drum riser for the mighty Pearl Jam,' Cameron, 62, said in a social media statement. Cameron, who was Pearl Jam's longest-tenured drummer, thanked his now-former bandmates Eddie Vedder, Stone Gossard, Mike McCready and Jeff Ament 'for inviting me into the band in 1998 and for giving me the opportunity of a lifetime, filled with friendships, artistry, challenges and laughter.' 'I am forever grateful to the crew, staff and fans the world over,' the musician continued. 'It's been an incredible journey. More to follow. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart.' Cameron did not share his reason for leaving Pearl Jam. The remaining band members shared their own statement about Cameron's exit. 'From being one of our first musical heroes in the bands Skinyard and the mighty Soundgarden, to playing on our first demos in 1990, Matt Cameron has been a singular and true powerhouse of a musician and drummer,' Pearl Jam wrote. 'He has propelled the last 27 years of Pearl Jam live shows and studio recordings. It was a deeply important chapter for our group and we wish him well always,' the statement added. 'He will be deeply missed and is forever our friend in art and music. We love you Matt.' Fans reacted to Cameron's exit from the band with supportive comments on social media. '27 unforgettable years thank you for the rhythm, heart, and legacy, Matt,' one fan wrote on X. 'End of an era! Much love to Matt!' another fan said. 'This is shocking. 'Chapter'. this has been 30 years! Thank you Matt,' a third account tweeted. Someone else wrote, 'Thanks Matt. You've been a part of something extraordinary. Happy retirement.' Two months before Cameron announced his exit, Pearl Jam wrapped up their Dark Matter World Tour. Cameron joined Pearl Jam in 1998 after the band rotated through several drummers including Dave Krusen, Matt Chamberlain, Dave Abbruzzese and Jack Irons. Pearl Jam's first album with Cameron was 2000s 'Binaural,' their sixth studio album in total. The band has since released six more albums, the most recent being 2024's 'Dark Matter.' Cameron was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2017 for his work with Pearl Jam. He will be inducted again later this year as a member of his former group Soundgarden.
