2025 Gold Cup Odds: Books hope USMNT can 'get the job done' against Mexico

Bookmakers got what they wanted from the Gold Cup odds market: USA vs. Mexico, in Houston, in a championship showdown capping the Fourth of July weekend. At 7 p.m. ET Sunday on FOX, the U.S. Men's National Team and El Tri square off. "This is definitely the match we want. I'd say Mexico is the USA's biggest rival," BetMGM Nevada's Scott Shelton said Friday evening. Shelton helps break down Gold Cup betting odds for the championship match. Mexico Moves To Favorite On Wednesday, Team USA got two Diego Luna goals in the first 15 minutes and made that hold up in a 2-1 semifinal victory over Guatemala. Mexico followed with a 1-0 victory over Honduras. Then BetMGM Nevada posted the three-way odds for Sunday's title tilt, declaring it a toss-up: Mexico +170/USA +170, with the draw at +200. But our neighbors to the south have since moved to the favorite. "Ticket-wise, there's literally one more ticket on the U.S. than on Mexico. But money-wise, it's 3/1 on Mexico. Draw only has a handful of tickets," Shelton said. With that action, Mexico is now a modest +145 favorite, with the U.S. at +190 and draw at +210. What that means: If you put a $100 bet on Team USA, and the Americans win, then you profit $190 (total payout $290) if the U.S. wins within 90 minutes plus injury time. And that's important to note. If you were to bet the U.S. on the three-way market, that bet doesn't extend to overtime/penalty kicks. So if the U.S. went on to win in overtime or on penalties, your ticket would be a loser. To avoid that possibility, you might want to consider the two-way "To Lift The Trophy" market, in which Mexico is -135 and USA is even money (+100). Then your bet is live, regardless of whether the game ends in regulation or goes to overtime/penalty kicks. Tie Goes To The Sportsbook As is often the case in soccer, and particularly in high-profile international matches, BetMGM Nevada would love to see the U.S. and Mexico tied after 90 minutes plus injury time. "By kickoff, we're gonna need a draw. That will end up being our best-case scenario," Shelton said. "Mexico will be just as heavily bet as USA." So, ostensibly, bookmakers are rooting for Sunday's match to go to overtime, and even to penalty kicks if possible. That's certainly what Caesars Sports is hoping for, along with a win from the Red, White & Blue on this Fourth of July weekend. "Draws are always a book-friendly result," Caesars head of soccer trading Mark Bickerdike said. "The U.S. ultimately getting the job done, preferably on penalties, would be the most favorable for the book." Robert Whittaker: If Khamzat Chimaev can't stop Dricus Du Plessis on the ground, he loses

Robert Whittaker doesn't see Khamzat Chimaev surviving a five-round war with Dricus Du Plessis. Du Plessis (23-2 MMA, 9-0 UFC) defends his middleweight title against Chimaev (14-0 MMA, 8-0 UFC) in the UFC 319 main event on Aug. 16 from United Center in Chicago (ESPN+ pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+). Whittaker suffered stoppage losses to both Du Plessis and Chimaev. He was quickly submitted in his most recent outing against Chimaev at UFC 308 last October. However, with Chimaev showing a tendency to slow down in his only two decision wins against Gilbert Burns and Kamaru Usman, Whittaker questions his ability to survive the championship rounds against Du Plessis – if he's dragged there. "Honestly, I have to say Dricus would be a favorite," Whittaker told FOX Sports Australia. "I think I'm leaning towards Dricus. The whole thing can be summed up – Chimaev will take him down. It's will he finish him before he gets back up? That's the million-dollar question because if he doesn't finish him on the ground, I think he loses." Former middleweight champion Whittaker (26-8 MMA, 17-6 UFC) will look to rebound when he takes on Reinier de Ridder (20-2 MMA, 3-0 UFC) in the UFC on ABC 9 headliner July 26 at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi. "Four fights, I see the light at the end of the tunnel," Whittaker said on his future. "I want four more. I see the stepping stones needed to do what I want to do. Four fights gets me into that title shot, gets me into a position to finish on top, to have that fairytale ending. So, I'm working towards it."

Warriors Reportedly 'Moving Away' From Long-Rumored Center Target

Warriors Reportedly 'Moving Away' From Long-Rumored Center Target originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Golden State Warriors entered the 2025 offseason with a key need towering above the rest: acquire a starting center. So far, nothing has materialized. Advertisement The Warriors have watched key names like Brook Lopez and Clint Capela sign elsewhere during free agency. Even a potential trade target like Jonas Valanciunas has found a new home in Denver. Despite the options quickly dwindling, the Warriors reportedly have no qualms about taking names off the board themselves. There is one name who has been tied to the team for a considerable duration that Golden State is losing interest in. Mar 7, 2024; San Francisco, California, USA; Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry (30) drives between Chicago Bulls center Nikola Vucevic (9) and guard Ayo Dosunmu (12) during the first quarter at Chase Center. © Kelley L Cox-Imagn Images Jake Fischer dropped another rumor mill roundup. That report heavily featured the Warriors, with Kuminga as a big talking point. The Chicago Bulls are one of the teams Fischer expected to be in on the sweepstakes to acquire the Warriors forward. However, hopes of a sign-and-trade bringing Kuminga to Chicago have lessened with the Warriors' fading interest in Nikola Vucevic. Advertisement Fischer wrote, "The Warriors, though, appear to have moved away from past trade interest they previously registered in veteran Bulls center Nikola Vučević, which might have helped spark something this summer." The NBA insider added some potential reasoning as to why the Warriors are pivoting elsewhere. It appears another name has taken the focus of their main interest, with regard to solving the frontcourt problems. Fischer added, "League sources say Golden State remains a leading contender to sign Al Horford away from Boston as a much-needed move to bolster a frontcourt rotation that is no longer home to Warrior-turned-New Orleans Pelican Kevon Looney." Vucevic remained productive in 2024-25. The Bulls center averaged 18.5 points, 10.1 rebounds, and 3.5 assists in 31.2 minutes per game, shooting 53.0 percent from the field and 40.2 percent from beyond the arc. Advertisement Vucevic's projected $21.5 million deal could have primed to be included in any sign-and-trade package for Kuminga. Warriors fans will need to wait to see if this fix to the frontcourt is truly off the board.
