Robert Whittaker: If Khamzat Chimaev can't stop Dricus Du Plessis on the ground, he loses

USA Todaya day ago
Robert Whittaker doesn't see Khamzat Chimaev surviving a five-round war with Dricus Du Plessis.
Du Plessis (23-2 MMA, 9-0 UFC) defends his middleweight title against Chimaev (14-0 MMA, 8-0 UFC) in the UFC 319 main event on Aug. 16 from United Center in Chicago (ESPN+ pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+).
Whittaker suffered stoppage losses to both Du Plessis and Chimaev. He was quickly submitted in his most recent outing against Chimaev at UFC 308 last October. However, with Chimaev showing a tendency to slow down in his only two decision wins against Gilbert Burns and Kamaru Usman, Whittaker questions his ability to survive the championship rounds against Du Plessis – if he's dragged there.
"Honestly, I have to say Dricus would be a favorite," Whittaker told FOX Sports Australia. "I think I'm leaning towards Dricus. The whole thing can be summed up – Chimaev will take him down. It's will he finish him before he gets back up? That's the million-dollar question because if he doesn't finish him on the ground, I think he loses."
Former middleweight champion Whittaker (26-8 MMA, 17-6 UFC) will look to rebound when he takes on Reinier de Ridder (20-2 MMA, 3-0 UFC) in the UFC on ABC 9 headliner July 26 at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi.
"Four fights, I see the light at the end of the tunnel," Whittaker said on his future. "I want four more. I see the stepping stones needed to do what I want to do. Four fights gets me into that title shot, gets me into a position to finish on top, to have that fairytale ending. So, I'm working towards it."

ESPN analyst disrespects Caitlin Clark with shocking ‘dangerous' claim about Fever

The post ESPN analyst disrespects Caitlin Clark with shocking 'dangerous' claim about Fever appeared first on ClutchPoints. Caitlin Clark has had a disappointing WNBA season for multiple reasons. The Indiana Fever star has missed almost half the campaign with quadriceps and groin injuries, and she has struggled to knock down shots when on the court. Her turnovers, which were already a glaring issue, have increased to 5.9 per contest in 2025. The 23-year-old remains a top-notch playmaker, the most popular figure in the sport and a threat to erupt from 3-point range, but the current circumstances have caused some people to make strong opinions about her impact on the team. Advertisement Following the Fever's 81-54 win over reigning MVP A'ja Wilson and the Las Vegas Aces, which came two nights after they defeated the Minnesota Lynx for the WNBA Commissioner's Cup, — Clark did not play in either contest — a women's basketball Hall of Famer and ESPN analyst dropped a polarizing soundbite. 'I think that Indiana is even more dangerous when Caitlin Clark doesn't play,' Carolyn Peck said on SportsCenter Thursday night, via Ken Swift. 'Because she's a ball-dominant guard {and} the ball is in her hands a lot, so you know what you need to try to take away. But when you look at Indiana now, they've got so many weapons…. They are a threat, and it's specifically on the defensive end. {Head coach Stephanie White} is so pleased with the intensity that they're bringing defensively.' Caitlin Clark and Fever need each other Peck, who coached the Purdue Boilermakers to a national championship in 1999, did not explicitly say the Fever are a better squad without No. 22. However, she certainly opened the door for an intense debate to transpire on social media. Despite her struggles from the floor, which are reflected through her 39.0 percent shooting from the field and 29.5 percent shooting from 3-point range, Clark considerably raises Indiana's ceiling. Advertisement Fans will also argue that she lowers the team's floor due to her high usage rate, but the 2024 All-WNBA First-Team selection can add a rare dimension to the offense. She can engineer a potent attack and also catch fire from well beyond the arc. The problem is, though, her shooting stroke is ice cold at the moment. Clark is a stunning 1-of-23 from long range in her last three games. Perhaps this latest injury-induced hiatus will allow the 2024 Rookie of the Year to get right. There is little doubt surrounding her potential. Caitlin Clark is expected to become the top player in this league in due time. The idea that the Fever are more dangerous without someone of her skill set is difficult to comprehend. Perhaps that is true when evaluating this version of the point guard, but even then, it is important to remember that Indy lost to the free-falling Los Angeles Sparks without Clark before beating the Lynx and Aces. Clark, Indiana can accomplish something special in 2025 Carolyn Peck's point about the Fever being a complete squad is indisputable. Leading scorer Kelsey Mitchell is shooting 37.1 percent from distance. Aaliyah Boston is averaging 16.2 points and 8.1 rebounds. Aari McDonald and Natasha Howard are also scoring in double-figures on a nightly basis. Sophie Cunningham leads an impactful bench. White is one of the most respected coaches in the WNBA today. Advertisement The Fever (9-8) have it all, just as long as Caitlin Clark is also on the floor. Hopefully, this group will get the chance to build in-game chemistry before the latter stretch of the season. Because if it does, trouble awaits the competition. Houston Rockets Trade Cam Whitmore to Washington Wizards

Houston Rockets Trade Cam Whitmore to Washington Wizards originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Houston Rockets are trading Cam Whitmore to the Washington Wizards for two second-round picks, sources tell ESPN. The deal gives Whitmore a tremendous opportunity for an increased role as he turns 21 on Tuesday and returns to the DMV area. Advertisement This trade gives Whitmore a genuine opportunity for a larger role in a rebuilding Wizards roster, one more open to experimenting with younger talent. If he develops more consistency, especially shooting from outside and maintaining defensive discipline, he has the potential to evolve into a true 3-and-D forward in the modern NBA. He will help anchor a wing rotation for a team that went 18–64 last season. He averaged 10.8 ppg last season for the Rockets. Whitmore's game is often described as "tweener-perfect" as he is good at driving to the basket, finishing with authority, using quick footwork in space, and stepping into mid‑range pull‑ups. Defensively, he brings positional adaptability from guarding power forwards to perimeter wings. Advertisement His tenacity and high energy translate into hustle plays that swing momentum, whether contesting shots, boxing out, or cutting off driving lanes. If Whitmore thrives, Washington benefits significantly as a potential foundational piece or trade asset. If not, the cost is limited to Day 2 draft picks. Mauricio Ruffy targets multiple top 15 lightweights, including Michael Chandler

Surging UFC lightweight Mauricio Ruffy expects an opportunity to break into the rankings in his next outing. Ruffy (12-1 MMA, 3-0 UFC) has quickly gained traction as a name to watch at 155 pounds following a hot start to his octagon tenure, highlighted by a Knockout of the Year contender against King Green at UFC 313 in March. The Brazilian thinks the natural next step is to fight someone in the rankings, and he sees three specific names that fit the bill. "I really believe that a name like that will come," Ruffy told Spin Genie. "Like Michael Chandler, Mateusz Gamrot, (Benoit) Saint Denis, I believe that one of those guys could come." Ruffy, 29, said his confidence that a potential breakthrough fight is on the horizon stems form the fact he was already offered one. He was offered a short-notice bout against Gamrot earlier this year, but the circumstances prevented it. That opportunity passed once, but whether it' Gamrot (25-3 MMA, 8-3 UFC) again, a former title challenger like Chandler (23-10 MMA, 2-5 UFC) or another dangerous name like Saint Denis (14-3 MMA, 6-3 UFC), he will be ready for them all. "The UFC also offered me Mateusz Gamrot, but we were four days away from the fight and Jean Silva would be there to fight, so none of my coaches would be in the corner," Ruffy said. "This put us in a difficult position to accept the fight. Nevertheless, I'm confident that a significant opponent, like Michael Chandler, Mateusz Gamrot, or Saint Denis, will eventually come my way. We'll see how it unfolds."
