Show speed limits on Maps, cops ask Google

Time of India09-07-2025
Gurgaon: Traffic cops on Wednesday requested Google to display speed limits of 129 roads in the city on its GPS navigation app – Google Maps – and alert a commuter if the vehicle exceeds the restriction.
Senior police officers said the tech giant's intervention was sought as speeding and rash driving have been identified as the key reasons for fatal road accidents in the city.
According to police data, 478 people died in road accidents in Gurgaon in 2024. The number of fatalities in the first half of this year has already reached 230, of which at least 34 are linked to crashes caused by driving beyond the speed limit.

Maximum speeds vary on different roads across the city.
For instance, the limit on Dwarka Expressway is 120kmph for cars, but this comes down to 30kmph on the Old Railway Road. On some stretches, such as Golf Course Road, the speed limits change for the surface road (60kmph) and underpasses (50kmph).
DCP (traffic) Rajesh Mohan on Wednesday held a meeting with Google officials at his office in Sector 28 to discuss the issue. Asked about the request, a Google official told TOI the company has agreed to integrate speed limits into the app and will complete the task within ten days.

Police have also written to GMDA, MCG and PWD – which maintain sections of the city's road network -- to install signage for informing commuters about speed limits on the 129 roads. These include Shankar Chowk-Sector 55/56 road, IFFCO Chowk-Sikanderpur metro station, MG Road (Sector 55/56)-IFFCO Chowk, Sector 29-Sector26A, Sohna Road-Ghata Road, Ambedkar Chowk-Mayfield Garden, Cyber Park-Ambedkar Chowk, Old Delhi Road-Sector 21-22 T point, and Millennium City Centre metro station-Signature Tower.
"A person can survive a road crash if the vehicle's speed is up to 30kmph. Many fatalities occur due to speeding. Therefore, stringent measures are essential. We will also begin issuing rigorous challans once speed boards are installed on all roads, as our aim is to save lives by enforcing traffic discipline," the DCP said.
Starting Thursday, police will start issuing challans to violators on Dwarka Expressway and Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway through 15 ANPR (automatic number plate recognition) cameras installed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).
CCTV feed will be given to Gurgaon traffic police, which will then issue e-challans to violators.
Until now, there were cameras on the expressways, but not ANPRs. In addition, NHAI has installed 110 traffic monitoring cameras (TMCs) to assist the agency in removing vehicles from these highways in case of breakdowns.
"Police will issue challans for speeding, helmet and seat belt violations, triple-riding, wrong-side driving, and banned vehicle entry.
The online system also enables real-time alerts for accidents and traffic jams, ensuring smoother and safer travel. Drivers are urged to follow traffic rules to avoid penalties," a traffic police officer said.
"Major roads in Gurgaon are expressways designed for the high speed traffic. In absence of pedestrian infrastructure, many of the fatalities are that of walkers. Hopefully, speed limits displayed on Google Maps can alert commuters and stop accidents from happening," said Rishi Sharma, a resident of Sector 48 in the city.

Pothole-riddled arterial roads make commute a nightmare for Kochiites

The proliferation of potholes even on innumerable arterial roads and on national highway corridors has made commuting a nightmare in Kochi, following which angry motorists, pedestrians and others are demanding accountability from the agencies concerned. Ranjit Thampy, a city-based socio-environmental activist, said that only the roads which had been resurfaced a few years ago in the city hub by Cochin Smart Mission Limited (CSML) were largely found to be free of potholes. He noted that this indicated a failure by the Kochi Corporation, Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA), Goshree Islands Development Authority (GIDA), Public Works Department (PWD), and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to ensure that preventive maintenance and the mandatory resurfacing of damaged corridors were carried out before the onset of the monsoons this year as well. 'The reason why roads that had been resurfaced using the BMBC method (that comes with a five-year warranty), and NHAI-owned NH corridors that are resurfaced using higher specifications develop potholes has to be probed. It often takes over an hour to reach from one point to a nearby point due to the worsening condition of roads and obstructive parking on almost all roads,' he said. Sources in the traffic police said that they were hamstrung, considering the unprecedented number of severely-potholed roads in the city and its immediate suburbs and the plethora of bottlenecked junctions. 'We are fed up with commuters often complaining to us about serpentine traffic snarls, wastage of time, fuel and the wear and tear of their vehicles. Incidents of road rage and accidents too are becoming common, since motorists often enter the wrong side of roads to avoid potholes,' they said. Gaping potholes With gaping potholes galore on the main carriageway and service roads of the NHAI-owned 17-km-long Edappally-Aroor NH 66 Bypass and the Kundannoor Junction-Maradu NH 85 corridor, the GCDA-owned Kaloor-Kadavanthra Road, the Kochi Corporation's Stadium Link Road, the GIDA's trio of Goshree bridges, the PWD's Thammanam-Pullepady Road and the NH Bypass-Vennala-Seaport-Airport Road corridor, NGOs and others filled a handful of potholes with stones and mud. There were also protests, with anything from shrubs to plantain trees coming in handy to warn motorists of impending potholes. Road owning agencies cite administrative delays for not doing preventive maintenance, rains and slack inter-departmental coordination as the reasons for the pathetic plight of roads in the city. Mayor M. Anilkumar spoke of how the Stadium Link Road would be resurfaced once the rain abated. Sources in the GCDA said that although tender was finalised to resurface the Kaloor-Kadavanthra Road earlier this year, the State government had not given sanction to execute the ₹2.50-crore work. 'The GCDA can directly award works only up to ₹1 crore. For now, workers have been directed to temporarily fill potholes and to place sign boards warning of potholes,' they said. On its part, the Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) is facing flak for delay in repairing damaged and trenched parts of the arterial Civil Line Road that it barricaded a year ago for Kochi metro's Kakkanad extension.

11 deaths in 3 years: Why Pachgaon Chowk is one of Gurgaon most dangerous spots

Gurgaon: Traffic cops have identified 23 conflict points at Pachgaon Chowk, one of the city's most notorious blackspots that has witnessed 11 fatalities and 12 injuries in 19 accidents between 2021 and 2024. The traffic engineering centre has highlighted how the junction's complex layout, combining high-speed highway traffic with slow-moving local vehicles, creates a deadly mix. The most recent tragedy occurred on June 21, when a Delhi Police head constable died and five others were injured after a Rajasthan Roadways bus overturned while trying to avoid crashing into a car. The report, prepared under DCP (traffic) Rajesh Mohan's supervision, identifies the junction as particularly hazardous because of its location at the median gap of NH-8 and its intersection with the Western Peripheral Expressway. The area's mixed land use, with Panchgaon village on one side and undeveloped land on the other, further complicates traffic movement. You Can Also Check: Gurgaon AQI | Weather in Gurgaon | Bank Holidays in Gurgaon | Public Holidays in Gurgaon The study reveals 11 crossing conflicts, seven diverging conflicts, and five merging conflicts at the junction. Trucks, the report says, are a major cause of collisions at this location, involved in six of 9 fatal accidents in these three years. They often make U-turns towards Delhi and Ajmer to avoid a cloverleaf, using the median gap to save 1.2km and increasing the risk of collision with straight-moving traffic. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Your IQ Is 140 If You Can Answer 10 of These Questions Correctly. IQ International Undo Buses also lack an alternative entry to the village, frequently using the median gap. Bus stopping to pick up and drop passengers on the main carriageway also pose considerable risks, who are forced to cross the road against high-speed traffic. Another major concern is wrong-side movement of two-wheelers, accounting for 37% of traffic violations. Traffic from Pachgaon village and the Delhi side often moves against the flow, particularly towards Pukharpur. An underutilised underpass for pedestrians and two-wheelers, located 200 metres from the median gap, is often avoided because of its poor maintenance and difficult access. The report notes that 82% of Delhi-bound traffic moves straight, while 11% attempts U-turns, creating dangerous situations. The report proposes limiting the U-turns of trucks at the median gap by installing a 4-metre height barrier. It also advises extending the median on the service road by about 20 metres to minimise complicated manoeuvres. The report calls for shifting bus stops on both sides of the road about 70 metres towards Delhi, reducing pedestrians' walking distance to the underpass. To improve connectivity, the report recommends building a new road linking Pukharpur Road with a service lane near the underpass and constructing footpaths for pedestrians. The report emphasises that immediate action is crucial, as the junction continues to pose a severe risk to both highway users and local commuters. Officials said they would strictly impose challans against buses halting at wrong spots and vehicles making illegal U-turns.

Motorists fume as Telangana RTA drives up service charges

Hyderabad: Applicants attempting to book slots for various transactions at the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) woke up to a rude shock on Sunday as they found a sudden increase in charges across several services. The revision came into effect at 2 am. The new rate-card shows that RTA has revised fees anywhere from Rs 100 to Rs 1,000 — with a fourfold jump in rates for a no-objection certificate (NOC). Available for Rs 100 until now, every NOC will now cost a motorist Rs 435. The cost for terminating vehicle agreements for four-wheelers has also been substantially increased from Rs 2,135 to Rs 3,135. Even commonly availed costs, right from learners' licence to vehicle hypothecation, have been brought under the new price umbrella. Motorists applying for any licence will have to cough up an additional Rs 100. The only exemptions: Permits, vehicle fitness assessments, taxes on vehicles from other states, permit cancellations, life taxes, and quarterly taxes. In 2022, the Telangana govt had raised life taxes under the Telangana Motor Vehicles Taxation Act, 1963, with increases ranging from 9% to 19% based on vehicle cost and category. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Unsold 2021 Cars Now Almost Free - Prices May Surprise You Unsold Cars | Search Ads Learn More Undo Many applicants, while ruing the sharp rise, also complained about the current revision being implemented surreptitiously without prior public announcement or notification. In fact, the RTA website: is yet to be updated with these new charges. Speaking to TOI, some said that they realised that the fees had been hiked only when they went to their RTA office to avail of a service. 'I tried to secure a learner's licence slot two days ago, when the fee displayed was Rs 450. However, I encountered technical issues and couldn't complete the booking. When I tried again on Sunday, I was surprised to see that the total amount had risen to Rs 550, with the service charge component having increased from Rs 100 to Rs 200,' said K Venkatesh, an applicant from Uppal. Move to increase revenue: RTA RTA officials said that the revision was aimed at enhancing revenue. 'Only service charges, which have remained unchanged for several years, have been increased. However, we need to monitor the situation for at least one month to assess how these increased charges contribute to revenue enhancement,' MM Chandrasekhar Goud, joint transport commissioner (IT & Vigilance), told TOI. Sources, on the other hand, hinted at the move being designed to accommodate tax exemptions being offered to EV buyers. Incidentally, since the Telangana govt implemented its EV policy on Nov 16, 2024, Rs 400 crore (approx) tax has been exempted through sales of more than 50,000 EVs. 'The govt's actions are unfair, as they offer complete tax relief to electric vehicles while parallelly raising service charges,' said M Dayanand, general secretary, Telangana Auto and Motor Welfare Union.'The facilities at their offices lack essential amenities for the public, and applicants are forced to wait in long queues for their turn. It is disappointing that despite these ongoing service deficiencies, the RTA has implemented increased service charges. I urge the govt authorities to reinstate the previous fee structure, in the interest of the public.'
