Daily Mail21 hours ago
Two of the world's richest men lost nearly £70billion in the first six months of the year as the valuation of their companies tumbled.
Tesla boss Elon Musk managed to cling on to his position as the wealthiest person in the world with a fortune of £268billion despite taking a £48billion hit since January.
His electric car firm's share price slumped nearly 16 per cent in the six months to the end of June. Meanwhile, Bernard Arnault, the boss of Louis Vuitton and Dior parent company LVMH, saw his fortune shrink by £20billion.
LVMH has seen its share price tumble more than 29 per cent this year. A slowdown in the sale of luxury goods has left the French tycoon with £109billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.
But Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg boosted his fortune by £37billion in the first six months of the year, taking his wealth to £189billion.
And Amazon boss Jeff Bezos is worth £4billion more than at the start of the year, taking his fortune to £178billion.

Major British bank with five million customers set to be sold to high street rival after days of speculation

A MAJOR British bank with five million customers is set to be sold to a high street rival after days of speculation. Santander have agreed a deal to acquire TSB from Sabadell for a whopping £2.65billion. 2 2 The bank beat British rival Barclays which also put in a formal bid for the Sabadell-owned unit, according to sources. Santander intends to integrate TSB in the Santander UK group, meaning it would become the second largest bank in the country by personal current account balances. However, the final transaction remains subject to regulatory approvals and Sabadell shareholder approval. The full transaction is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2026. TSB already boasts a nationwide network of 218 branches and outlets, and a growing digital presence. It serves approximately 5 million customers, primarily in the personal and small business segments, with £34 billion in mortgages and £35 billion in deposits. But with the latest buyout news, TSB combined with Santander would serve nearly 28 million retail and business customers nationwide. And TSB customers will also have access to Santander's international network in a massive boost. This means they can benefit from the group's leading technology platforms. The latest acquisition appears to be another win for Santander as the company strengthens its position in one of its core markets. It comes as Sabadell, which bought TSB in 2015 for £1.7bn, is seeking to fend off an billion-pound hostile approach from its domestic rival BBVA. Santander has in the past year entertained bids from both NatWest and Barclays for its UK retail arm - but ultimately rejected both offers due to disagreements over price. Ana Botín, Banco Santander's executive chair, said: "The acquisition of TSB represents a continuing strategic commitment to our customers in the UK, offering a compelling opportunity that is financially attractive to our shareholders and aligned with Santander's long-term objectives. "It strengthens our franchise in a core market through the acquisition of a low-risk and complementary business that adds to our diversification. "We are creating a stronger and more competitive business across key products such as personal current accounts where the combined business will become the second largest bank in the UK by market share. "The transaction will accelerate our path to greater profitability in the UK and helps achieve a return on tangible equity of 16% by 2028. "The acquisition also reflects our commitment to growing profitably through disciplined capital allocation. This acquisition meets our goal of achieving a return on investment above 20% and EPS accretion from year 1, while consuming limited capital and having low execution risk. "Furthermore, the transaction will not affect Santander's existing distribution policy and 2025 targets.' Meanwhile, CEO of Santander UK, Mike Regnier said: "This is an excellent deal for customers combining two strong and complementary banks, creating one of the most substantial banks in the UK and materially enhancing the competitiveness of the industry. 'At Santander UK we have momentum in our strategy to become the best bank for customers in the UK by investing in technology and service and improving our processes and efficiency. "This deal accelerates our transformation allowing us to enhance our customer proposition and invest more in innovative products and our digital offering, supported by the human touch service so many appreciate, not least in our new branch formats and enhancements across the country. 'We are fully committed to ensuring a seamless integration, by leveraging our market leading technology and significant experience. "Maintaining the highest levels of service for customers across both banks will be a key priority and we will support all colleagues through the transition, as we invest in building a stronger bank for the future'.

WhatsApp plans to allow businesses to send voice notes to users

Meta Platforms plans to allow businesses to send WhatsApp voice notes to users as it introduces adverts on the messaging app to boost revenue. Mark Zuckerberg, chief executive of Meta, unveiled tools designed to help businesses communicate with WhatsApp's three billion global users at a company event in Miami on Tuesday. The WhatsApp business app was first launched in 2018. It allows businesses to pay to reach customers on the app who have agreed to receive direct messages from them. WhatsApp has also been making money from the messaging app with ads on Facebook that allow users to click to open a WhatsApp chat and have a conversation with the business. • WhatsApp will start featuring ads. Here's what it means for you Meta said on Tuesday that it is introducing an ability for users to call large businesses on WhatsApp or ask them to call back, with the ability to continue a conversation via messaging after the call. Businesses will also be able to send voice notes to customers in 'the near future' and conduct video calls, according to Nikila Srinivasan, Meta's vice-president of business messaging. Last month Meta announced it was introducing ads inside the WhatsApp messaging service for the first time. While users will not see adverts when using WhatsApp chat, if they select the 'Updates' tab on the app, they will access business adverts. Users on the tab can select 'Channels' to follow that are run by brands and celebrities which can post to their group of followers. Advertisers can pay to promote their WhatsApp channel within the Updates tab. The tab also includes 'Status', WhatsApp's disappearing 'Stories', which will carry ads. Srinivasan said: 'WhatsApp is an app that is used by three billion users. It's very much a part of their everyday lives. They have not previously been able to discover a new business right on WhatsApp. 'So as a business, to me, that is an incredible value proposition. This, in fact, is something I've heard personally over time from a lot of businesses who want to be discovered on WhatsApp. That's really where people are today, and that's where they want to engage.' Srinivasan said advertisers and WhatsApp would not have access to information from users' private messages or calls. She said: 'Your personal messages, calls and statuses will remain end-to-end encrypted and no one, not even WhatsApp, will be able to see them.' If a user has chosen to link their Meta account to WhatsApp, they will receive 'more relevant information and ads', she said. Meta is introducing an 'Ads Manager' which allows businesses to organise their WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram ad campaigns in one place. Meta said it would use artificial intelligence to deliver messages to the customers who are most likely to be interested. Meta bought WhatsApp for $19 billion in 2014. It is under pressure to boost advertising revenues to support its aggressive investment in generative AI. The company said it was introducing business AI agents in Mexico and the Philippines before launching them globally. It is testing business AI with a group of companies in the US. Zuckerberg said: 'In the next few years I expect that just like every business today has an email address, social media account and website, they're also going to have an AI business agent. 'You're going to be able to leverage all of the content that already exists on your Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp profiles to easily create these agents, making them a true extension of your team.'

Trump now thinking about ‘deporting' former first buddy Elon Musk

Donald Trump suggested he would "take a look" at deporting Elon Musk after Musk renewed criticism of Trump's signature tax and spending legislation. Trump also hinted at using the "Department of Government Efficiency (Doge)," an agency once led by Musk, against him. Musk, a naturalized American citizen, has been a vocal critic of the "One Big Beautiful Bill Act" since returning to the private sector after leading Doge, which significantly cut government spending. Trump claims Musk's opposition stems from the administration's efforts to eliminate tax incentives for electric vehicles, suggesting Musk's financial interests are the motivation. Trump threatened Musk with financial repercussions, while Musk has so far refrained from directly responding to the threats but hinted at future escalation.
