Pope Leo slammed for blessing Lions star Sam LaPorta... despite being a Chicago Bears fan
Pope Leo felt the wrath of Chicago Bears fans after blessing Sam LaPorta and his wife - despite the tight end playing for their NFL rivals, the Detroit Lions.
LaPorta and his partner Callahan recently visited the Vatican - just days after tying the knot - to meet the first ever American-born leader of the Catholic church, Pope Leo XIV.
They were given a blessing by the new pope, who is a native of Chicago and a fan of both the Bears and the White Sox.
'Thank you to a very busy man for blessing me and my bride. A special moment we'll never forget,' LaPorta wrote on Instagram alongside pictures of the ceremony.
Leo was gifted a personalized Bear's jersey by vice president JD Vance back in May but many Lions fans celebrated his divine intervention ahead of the 2025 season.
'Record-breaking season incoming,' one posted on social media, echoing the excitement of many supporters.
LaPorta is considered one of the finest tight ends in the NFL heading into the 2025 season
But Bears fans were less happy with the pope. 'Why would he bless a division rival?' one asked. 'Chicago gotta be p***ed,' another said.
'Is the pope from Chicago? Not sure I like this,' a third added. The Lions and Bears are rivals in the NFC North.
The Bears have a 105-80-5 regular-season record against the Lions but in recent years it is a rivalry that has been dominated by Detroit.
The Lions have won five of their past six meetings and Dan Campbell's team won the NFC North last season, while the 5-12 Bears finished bottom of the division.
Pope Leo grew up rooting for the White Sox and earlier this month he wore a team cap as he greeted another pair of newlyweds at the Vatican.

MMA referee screams at doctors to help as former UFC star carried out of cage after sickening kick to testicles
A REFEREE screamed for help from a doctor after a former UFC star crumpled in agony from a kick to the testicles. Stricken Alexander Romanov had to be carried from the cage on a stretcher after just his second Professional Fighters League (PFL) match. 5 5 5 The Moldovan, aka King Kong, was once a top UFC heavyweight prospect. But the 34-year-old switched to a different Mixed Martial Art earlier this year. And he was closing in on a PFL heavyweight title shot when a sickening blow sent him reeling. Romanov was taking on Russian Valentin Moldavsky, 33, in Chicago. And his eye-watering fate came as early as the opening round. Romanov had been struggling to seriously trouble Moldavsky, despite landing a few of his renowned slam takedowns. And when the younger man got up, he put on enough pressure to leave King Kong tiring. Little more than 30 seconds were left in the first of the three five-minute rounds when the distressing moment arrived. The pair were grasping each other on the ropes when Romanov delivered a knee to his opponent. 5 Moldavsky returned the blow in kind - but accidentally went too low. Romanov instantly slumped to the floor, holding his groin - while his rival protested his innocence. Canelo Alvarez vs Terence Crawford in another twist as UFC boss Dana White says he IS promoting super-fight The ref yelled for medical aid as Romanov was in obvious agony and fight fans looked on worried. Meanwhile, Moldavsky sunk to his knees, with his head down - apparently in rueful reflection The cage-side doctor dashed over to treat the stricken giant. And the doc soon confirmed the inevitable - that Romanov would be unable to continue. The 18st 13lbs wrestler was then taken away on a stretcher. It meant the bout - a PFL heavyweight tournament semi-final - was ruled a "no contest". Romanov had dazzled when winning his only other PFL fight in May, beating 40-year-old American Timothy May by submission. It left the East European well placed for a title shot - until a badly placed knee in his very next fight. 5

The couple are making the most of McVay's time off before the Rams begin their training camp During that time, Khomyn was studying international business at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. The couple tied the knot in a lavish Beverly Hills wedding in June 2022, about four months after McVay won the Rams their second franchise Super Bowl against the Cincinnati Bengals.
