Thief hides 76 bottles of stolen wine in wheelie bin and flees in tuk-tuk
A tuk-tuk driver was caught on CCTV using a wheelie bin to steal 76 bottles of wine in thefts that amounted to £24,000.
Iuliu Kubola broke into a restaurant in central London on May 6 before loading the haul into his pedicab and cycling away.
The 61-year-old was arrested when a vigilant police officer recognised him as a person of interest following a police briefing.
PC Jordan Felstead stopped the Islington resident outside a bar in the Cornhill financial heartland on June 22.
After making enquiries with the City of London Police's Criminal Investigations Department, he discovered that Kubola was a suspect connected to a spate of burglaries.
He had been seen on CCTV taking the bottles of wine, putting them into the bin and loading it into the back of his pedicab.
Kubola returned to the Threadneedle Street restaurant on June 15 to steal a further three bottles, worth around £680.
He went back four days later but left without taking anything.
Det Con Marcus Fairclough, of the Criminal Investigation Department, said: 'Thanks to the good work by our officers, who spotted him and quickly made enquiries and the arrest, Iuliu Kubola will face the consequences of his criminality.
'Burglary has a significant impact on businesses and residential communities.
'We will attend all reports of break-ins in the city; giving us the best chance of making an arrest and collecting evidence from a scene.
'We will always take this type of criminality seriously and thoroughly investigate all evidential leads, including forensics, to bring those perpetrators to justice.'
Kubola damaged an external door and locks, costing £1,425 to repair.
Physical forensics manager Andrew Walker said: 'Our fast response is vital to maximise forensic opportunities and lessen the impact on the victims.
'Being burgled is horrendous; not being able to tidy up or open your business and resume trading exacerbates this massively. More Trending
'The victim is at the heart of everything we do. Delivering them justice, whilst minimising the impact that crime has on them, is the bedrock on which City of London Police Forensic Services operates.'
City of London Police said it is one of the few forces where scenes of crimes officers go to every incident where forensics can be recovered and it does not screen out 'low level' crime.
Kubola will be sentenced in September.

Crocodile that terrorised town for three days turned out to be an inflatable toy
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video An Italian town has been left red-faced after a crocodile floating in its river turned out to be an inflatable toy. Police and animal control officers brought in drones to track down the reptile as it floated in the Sanguinara river near Ladispoli. Pictures and videos of the toy were shared around the town and on social media, although nobody seemed to pick up on the fact that the croc was always in an identical pose and never seen moving. The search went on for about three days – until the crocodile was finally revealed to simply be an inflatable toy. One woman who spoke to local media said the crocodile was a 'toy we leave here for other children to play with', adding a 'large dinosaur' toy had also been left in the same area. Now the town's authorities are threatening legal action for 'causing alarm' – but it's not known who they will direct the complaint against. Earlier this week the town's mayor, Alessandro Grando, issued a press release warning residents to be careful. In an updated statement shared on Facebook last night he admitted the incident had been a 'false alarm'. Mr Grando said: 'After the necessary checks that have been carried out, we can finally confirm that there are no dangerous reptiles in the Sanguinara River. 'Although it was an unlikely circumstance, the competent authorities carried out all necessary checks to exclude any potential risk to the public. More Trending 'Following investigations, the following emerged: a citizen of Ladispoli declared that she had placed a toy in the playground adjacent to the waterway, matching the photos that have been circulating in recent days, which someone had deliberately placed in the river, causing the chaos that ensued. 'This is reckless behavior that we will pursue with a complaint against unknown persons for causing alarm. 'With this communication, we can finally put this matter to rest, reassuring everyone that there is no risk and that it was just a joke in terrible taste. 'We thank the police, volunteers, and all citizens for their cooperation and patience.' Get in touch with our news team by emailing us at webnews@ For more stories like this, check our news page. Who is missing inventor Julian Brown - and why is his 'disappearance' such a mys
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video A 21-year-old inventor who disappeared after posting cryptic videos saying he was under attack is keeping a low profile, according to his mum. Julian Brown has not been seen in public since July 9 after he posted a video claiming that he was under attack. Nia Brown told reporters she could not provide anymore details. But who is Julian Brown and why is there mystery over his whereabouts? We take a look below. Julian is an inventor who lives in Atlanta, Georgia, and has more than 1.7million followers on Instagram. He gained prominence for his work in the energy field in particular 'Plastoline'. The inventor has gained lots of public attention and millions of followers after sharing updates on social media about his work. He's only hit the headlines this month after his mysterious disappearance from social media. Julian is the founder of Naturejab, a company that makes natural products, as 'an innovator in the use of microwave pyrolysis of plastic waste.' He is best known for inventing Plastoline – a device that he claims converts plastic waste into usable fuels such as gasoline, diesel and jet fuel. This is achieved by microwave pyrolysis which heats plastic in the absence of oxygen to break it down chemically into fuel. He first learnt his skills at school during a welding class. Talking about his inspiration behind the creation of the technology, he said: 'It made me so upset that even though we are told that we are recycling, plastic is clearly ending up in the oceans and landfills where it is affecting so many lives, including our own.' He received $100,000 from Reddit co-creator Alexis Ohanian, to realise his dream. Julian has not been heard from since July 9 and posted a chilling video before his disappearance. He wrote in a post: 'Something is happening, keep me in your prayers please. SCREEN RECORD THIS. I don't know. 'I'm certainly under attack… I can't go into so much detail.' Before July 9, he also posted some concerning messages where it appeared like he felt he was being targeted. He wrote on July 3: 'A SECRET Helicopter circled me in the middle of NOWHERE… and it gets even scarier – Pray for me please.' It sparked concern from his followers that he was in danger for his invention. More Trending His mum Nia told Daily Mail that Julian is not missing and that he is safe despite his quiet presence online. She said: 'I can confirm Julian is safe but in the best interest of his security I'm not able to provide any more information.' But when she was pressed for further details, she said she could not provide anymore information. It is still a mystery as to when Julian will make a public appearance again. Everything we know about New York City shooting suspect Shane Devon Tamura
A gunman killed four people including a New York City police officer when he opened fire inside a corporate building in the heart of Manhattan. Named by police as Shane Tamura, the suspect later turned the weapon on himself, officials said. The shooting took place at a skyscraper that is home to the headquarters of both the NFL and investment giants Blackstone. It happened at the end of the workday in the same part of the city where the chief executive of UnitedHealthcare was gunned down outside a hotel late last year. CCTV footage shows the gunman stepping out of a double-parked BMW armed with an M4 carbine, an assault-style rifle used extensively in the US military, then marching across a public plaza into the building shortly before 6.30pm on Monday. He quickly opened fire on the NYPD officer as he entered the building before shooting a woman who tried to take cover, police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said at a news conference on Monday night. He then started 'spraying' the lobby with gunfire. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video The man went to the elevator bank and shot a security guard who was taking cover behind a security desk and also another man in the lobby, Tisch said. After taking the elevator to the 33rd floor to a real estate management company, he shot and killed another person on that floor. The man then walked down a hallway and shot himself, she said. Commissioner Tisch told reporters the gunman appeared to have acted alone, though his motives remained a mystery. She said Tamura had a documented history of mental illness and appeared to have driven to New York from Las Vegas over a period of three days. A widely published photo of the gunman, that CNN said was shared by police, showed him walking into the building carrying his rifle. Preliminary checks of the suspect's background did not show a significant criminal history, CNN reported, citing officials. Another widely circulated photo showed the permit issued to Tamura by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department allowing him to legally carry a concealed firearm. Caleb Clarke, a former classmate and high school football teammate, told NBC Tamura 'was the biggest goofball in the world, just a ton of energy, class clown'. He said the two played together in California until Tamura transferred from a Santa Clarita high school to Grenada Hills High School in 2015, just before their senior year. Clarke told the broadcaster it seemed as if Tamura was destined for greatness as an athlete, saying: 'I don't think he walked around to be like, 'Oh, I'll have NFL games one day.' I think it was more of everybody just telling him how great he was … how special he was.' Authorities offered no explanation for why Tamura might have singled out the building at 345 Park Avenue, whose tenants include the National Football League, private equity giant Blackstone, the accounting firm KPMG and real estate company Rudin Management. CNN and NBC cited unnamed officials as saying the shooter had a grievance with the NFL and its handling of CTE, a brain condition linked to head trauma. The gunman had a note in his pocket saying he suffered from CTE, the news channels said, quoting a source with knowledge of the investigation. He also asked in the note that his brain be studied after his death, it was said. The officer killed was Didarul Islam, 36, an immigrant from Bangladesh who had served as a police officer in New York City for more than three years. 'He was doing the job that we asked him to do. He put himself in harm's way. He made the ultimate sacrifice,' Commissioner Tisch said. 'He died as he lived. A hero.' One man was seriously wounded and remains in critical condition, Mayor Eric Adams said. Four others got minor injuries attempting to flee. The mayor said officials are still 'unraveling' what took place. The NFL has confirmed one of their employees was wounded in the attack. More Trending 'One of our employees was seriously injured in this attack. He is currently in the hospital and in stable condition,' NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement to employees. 'NFL staff are at the hospital, and we are supporting his family.' He added that the football organization believed that all of its other employees were safe and accounted for. 'We are deeply grateful to the law enforcement officers who responded to this threat quickly and decisively and to Officer Islam, who gave his life to protect others,' Mr Goodell said.
