An Italian town has been left red-faced after a crocodile floating in its river turned out to be an inflatable toy.
Police and animal control officers brought in drones to track down the reptile as it floated in the Sanguinara river near Ladispoli.
Pictures and videos of the toy were shared around the town and on social media, although nobody seemed to pick up on the fact that the croc was always in an identical pose and never seen moving.
The search went on for about three days – until the crocodile was finally revealed to simply be an inflatable toy.
One woman who spoke to local media said the crocodile was a 'toy we leave here for other children to play with', adding a 'large dinosaur' toy had also been left in the same area.
Now the town's authorities are threatening legal action for 'causing alarm' – but it's not known who they will direct the complaint against.
Earlier this week the town's mayor, Alessandro Grando, issued a press release warning residents to be careful.
In an updated statement shared on Facebook last night he admitted the incident had been a 'false alarm'.
Mr Grando said: 'After the necessary checks that have been carried out, we can finally confirm that there are no dangerous reptiles in the Sanguinara River.
'Although it was an unlikely circumstance, the competent authorities carried out all necessary checks to exclude any potential risk to the public. More Trending
'Following investigations, the following emerged: a citizen of Ladispoli declared that she had placed a toy in the playground adjacent to the waterway, matching the photos that have been circulating in recent days, which someone had deliberately placed in the river, causing the chaos that ensued.
'This is reckless behavior that we will pursue with a complaint against unknown persons for causing alarm.
'With this communication, we can finally put this matter to rest, reassuring everyone that there is no risk and that it was just a joke in terrible taste.
'We thank the police, volunteers, and all citizens for their cooperation and patience.'

Hairdresser 'upset' after thief swipes phone from under her

Emma Horne was working at her salon in Warrington, Cheshire, on Tuesday [June 24] when a man carrying a newspaper came in asking for a haircut. After the 42-year-old explained she didn't cut men's hair, he claimed to be asking for his wife, so she walked behind her desk to fetch a price list. Footage shows the cap-wearing thief take the chance to unfold his newspaper and place it over her Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra phone that was sitting on top of the desk. The man can then be seen swiping his newspaper and Emma's £1,300 mobile off the unit's top and making a swift getaway without anyone noticing the device had gone. Emma said she realised a few minutes after he left, but she and a client couldn't find him when they looked down a nearby street. When they returned to the salon and checked their cameras, they found the man's cunning theft was captured on CCTV. Emma said she realised a few minutes after he left (Image: Kennedy News and Media) The incident has been reported to Cheshire Police, and the force has confirmed enquiries are ongoing. Emma, from Warrington, Cheshire, said: "It happened so fast he was literally in the salon for minutes. "I went behind the counter to get a price list for him, then he put the newspaper over my phone and swiped it. It was gone within seconds. "I felt angry and I was dead upset because it's the fact that someone came and took my property right in front of my face. He was standing right next to me. "He actually looks at the cameras and everything so he knew the cameras were there because he looks right at it. "About three minutes after he left, I was like, 'where's my phone?'. "Panic set in because I've got my whole work schedule and everything on my phone. Everything's just gone. "I went straight into the bank and put a freeze on my cards because I've got savings accounts and everything on there. I can't access my money now. "It happened so fast. The anger is setting in now. I'm quite frustrated with it because I've got to go out and get myself a new phone and everything now. "These people think they can go around and do this and get away with it." Emma says she bought the phone eight months ago and had only recently finished paying for it. She insists she usually welcomes everybody into her salon but believes she'll be more wary of potential customers in future. Emma said: "I feel a bit wary about things now" "He did it so fast, we just didn't see him. It makes you feel a bit uneasy. "We've got cameras for our own security and they're still coming in and doing it. "We're quite friendly in our salon and we welcome everybody but I suppose you've still got to be on your guard because these people are out there going around nicking phones. "Someone said they saw him lurking outside so he was obviously watching me put my phone down." Her post said: "This just happened 1hr ago at the Warrington Market. "The newspaper was a decoy. My friend just had her brand-new Samsung phone swiped after he pretended to be interested in services at her salon. "He placed a newspaper on top of the phone and swiped it. Please share if you can." A spokesperson for Cheshire Police said: "At 11.38am on Tuesday 24 June, police were called to a report of theft at a hair salon in Time Square, Warrington. "The caller reported that approximately 30 minutes earlier, an unknown man had entered the salon posing as a client, and stole a mobile phone. "Enquiries in relation to the incident are ongoing and anyone with any information is asked to contact Cheshire Police via or call 101 quoting IML2118222."

Urgent hunt for naked man prowling in front of homes in a gimp mask

The UK has yet another naked man wearing only a gimp mask on the loose. Ring Doorbell owners were shocked to find a nude man prowling around in front of their cameras on Westby Street, Cleveland Road and Bannister Street in Lytham, Lancashire, in the early hours of July 18. Lancashire Police said: 'We are aware of a concerning video circulating on social media of a naked male wearing a face covering walking around Lytham in the early hours of the morning. 'This incident was not initially reported to police and has only been brought to our attention after it has been viewed on Facebook. 'Fylde Rural Task Force are currently conducting CCTV and house to house enquiries and would like to reassure you that we are taking this matter seriously. 'We can confirm this incident occurred on the 18th July 2025 at approximately 00:50 hours, not on the 31st July as suggested by a recent anonymous Facebook post.' It comes just a few weeks after 'Pantherman' was spotted quite literally prowling around gravestones in Merseyside. A person dressed in a catsuit has been terrorising locals after being spotted stalking people along secluded paths and reportedly leaping out from behind gravestones. The mysterious figure, dressed in a skin-tight black cat suit and mask, was captured on camera meowing and writhing on the ground near Wallasey Beach, Merseyside. Footage shows the person wriggling under a fence near a Harvester pub in the Wirral before prancing along a path. Another video shows people in a car screaming as the figure approaches close by. Residents claim he resembles a 'banshee,' 'urban jaguar' and even a 'gimp' and locals like Abbie Gilbert have said the community are trying to hunt 'him or it' down. But Abbie said she saw the funny side and told Metro: 'I really found the whole thing quite amusing and I can't believe how many people in Wirral have also had encounters and are aware of him. 'From everyone's sightings, the Pantherman is harmless although he does look scary. I really don't think he's dangerous, just a bit strange.' Hunt for murder suspect who dropped off baby after four relatives found dead

A car has been found in the search for a man suspected of murder who abandoned a baby girl after murdering four of her relatives. Austin Robert Drummond, 28, remains on the run after being wanted for the murder of James M Wilson, 21, Adrianna Williams, 20, Cortney Rose, 38, and Braydon Williams, 15 in Tennessee, US. After killing the family members, officers say Drummond dropped off the seven-month-old girl and, in an act of 'compassion', indicated her presence to nearby people. The baby is now being cared for and looked after, authorities confirmed. Adrianna and Braydon Williams were the children of Ms Rose. Police have now discovered a car driven by Drummond in Jackson, 70 miles from where the family's bodies were found and 40 miles away from where the baby was left. Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Director David Rausch said he believed Drummond had targeted the family, with whom he had a relationship. He described Drummond's choice to abandon the baby while alerting members of the public as an 'act of compassion'. More Trending 'While this was an extremely tragic and violent event… there was a sign of compassion, if you will', he said. A family member of one of the victims wrote online that they had 'trusted' Drummond, who had been 'nothing short of amazing to us and our kids', Sky News reported. A $15,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest of Drummond, who is wanted on four counts of first-degree murder, one count of aggravated kidnapping, and weapons offences. He had a previous conviction in 2014 for aggravated robbery, for which he served prison, where he was further charged with criminal offences, including attempted murder.
