South Africa coach stopped Wiaan Mulder from scoring 400 and breaking Brian Lara's world record: ‘Let the legends…'
South Africa head coach Shukri Conrad told Wiaan Mulder not to go after Brian Lara's world record 400, as revealed by the South African captain for the Zimbabwe series. Mulder, who sent cricket statisticians into overdrive with his record-breaking knock in the second Test against Zimbabwe, sacrificed a realistic chance at breaking one of cricket's most hallowed records by declaring his innings. Wiaan Mulder and Shukri Conrad South Africa's first-time captain was just 33 runs short of breaking Brian Lara's iconic 400 not out, set 21 years ago, before selflessly declaring with the team on 626 for 5. He then made an immediate impact with the ball, taking two wickets in back-to-back overs and adding a sharp catch to help bowl out Zimbabwe for 170. South Africa enforced the follow-on and had Zimbabwe struggling at 51 for 1 by stumps. Already 1-0 up in the brief series, the reigning World Test Championship winners held a commanding 405-run lead and looked poised to seal another three-day victory by Tuesday. After the day's play, while talking to broadcaster SuperSuport, Mulder said he spoke to head coach Shukri Conrad at the Lunch break on Day 2. He told Mulder to let the legends keep their records. 'I was speaking to Shuks (Proteas coach Shukri Conrad) and he kind of said to me as well, 'Let the legends keep the really big scores.' You never know what my fate is or what is destined for me. But Brian Lara keeping that record is exactly the way it should be.' The all-rounder said South Africa already had enough runs on the board, and he did not feel the need to surpass Lara's record. 'First, I thought we have enough and we need to bowl,' said. 'Secondly, Brian Lara is a legend, he got 400 against England and for someone of that stature to keep that record is pretty special. If I get the chance again I'd probably do the same thing.' Lara, the former West Indies skipper, is one of cricket's legendary figures, tallying almost 12,000 runs in test cricket at an average of 52.88 per innings, including 24 centuries and 48 half-centuries from 1990 to 2006. Within a couple of months in 1994, he set records for highest scores in test cricket (375 against England) and first-class cricket (501 not out). After losing the test record to Australia's Matthew Hayden, who scored 380 against Zimbabwe in October 2003, Lara regained the record with an unbeaten 400 six months later in 2004. Mulder resumed day two on 264 not out, with the second new ball just eight overs old. Undeterred, he continued to dominate, reaching his triple century off 297 balls — the second-fastest ever, after Virender Sehwag's 278-ball triple ton in 2008. He eventually raced from 300 to 367 in just 37 deliveries, smashing 49 fours and 4 sixes. To stay mentally locked in during his near-seven-hour stay at the crease, Mulder revealed he repeatedly sang 'Zombie' by The Cranberries — a technique that helped him stay focused and in rhythm. South Africa coach Shukri Conrad reacts to Wiaan Mulder's record 367* 'I never even dreamt of getting a double hundred, never mind a triple hundred but it's super special,' Mulder said. 'The most important thing is it put the team in a good position to hopefully win this test.' Head coach Shukri Conrad praised his captain's performance: 'Wiaan's innings was extraordinary. Batting at No.3, facing the new ball, and showing such composure — it was a masterclass.' South Africa declared at 626-5, their highest total in nine years, before rolling Zimbabwe for 170. Test debutant Prenelan Subrayen, 31, impressed with 4-42, while Mulder added two wickets and a catch to his all-round performance. Zimbabwe's only resistance came from Sean Williams, who, despite being ill, smashed 83 off 55 balls — the fastest half-century in Zimbabwe's Test history. By stumps, Zimbabwe was 51-1 in their second innings, still trailing by 405 runs, as South Africa moved closer to wrapping up the series with another crushing win.

Kane Williamson unavailable as New Zealand name squad for Zimbabwe Tests
New Zealand will be without senior batter Kane Williamson and allrounder Michael Bracewell for the upcoming two-Test series against Zimbabwe, with both players unavailable due to overseas T20 franchise who remains a key figure in the side, has opted to honour his deal with Middlesex in the English County Championship and will also feature for London Spirit in The Hundred. Bracewell, currently playing for MI New York in Major League Cricket (MLC), was picked up by Southern Brave in The Hundred for 200,000 - a move New Zealand Cricket (NZC) said was "agreed and factored into his NZC central contract."advertisementWith the Tests in Bulawayo not part of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC), NZC and the national selectors have taken a pragmatic view of player availability. "Kane and Michael were up front with New Zealand Cricket about their availability for this tour during the contracting process," said head coach Rob Walter, who has named his first Test squad since taking over from Gary Stead last month."While all Test matches are hugely special and important, the fact these Tests aren't part of the World Test Championship did influence the discussions on this occasion. We will obviously miss their talent and class, but it allows an opportunity to others and we're lucky to be able to call on the likes of Ajaz [Patel] and Henry [Nicholls], who are both proven performers at Test level."Fast bowler Ben Sears is also unavailable due to a side strain, while Kyle Jamieson has opted to remain in New Zealand for the birth of his first absences open the door for fresh faces. Uncapped quick Matt Fisher earns his maiden Test call-up, and Jacob Duffy - who has represented New Zealand in white-ball formats - could be in line for a long-format debut."Matt's someone we're really excited about," Walter said. "He's one of the fastest bowlers in the country and we think he's got an X-factor. We're blessed to have a large number of strong fast bowlers in this country and we're looking forward to adding Matt into that mix now, giving him a little bit of touring experience and a taste of what it means to be part of the Black Caps."Left-arm spinner Ajaz Patel and middle-order batter Henry Nicholls return to the squad, providing experience alongside a core of established players and emerging Zealand Test squad: Tom Latham (capt), Tom Blundell (wk), Devon Conway, Jacob Duffy, Matt Fisher, Matt Henry, Daryl Mitchell, Henry Nicholls, Will O'Rourke, Ajaz Patel, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra, Mitchell Santner, Nathan Smith, Will Young- EndsYou May Also Like

(Photo by Adrian Dennis / AFP) / RESTRICTED TO EDITORIAL USE(AFP) Dimitrov, two sets up against Sinner, was on his way to producing one of the biggest upsets of the tournament by knocking out the World No. 1. However, the Bulgarian's dream run at the center court came to a halt as he clutched his right chest after hitting an ace when the scores were level at 2-2 in the third set, and started shouting, 'My pec! My pec!' - referring to his pectoral muscle. Sensing his opponent's uneasiness, Sinner crossed over to Dimitrov's side of the court, as the Bulgarian sat on the grass, with his hand on his chest. Soon after, he was seated in the chair as his support staff inspected and nursed the injury, but that did not prove to be useful, and Grigor Dimitrov was taken inside for further treatment. All this while, Sinner was waiting for an update on the proceedings while chatting with his support staff. After a while, Dimitrov appeared from the treatment room and announced that he was withdrawing. What Happened To Grigory Dimitrov? Gregor Dimitrov suffered a right pectoral muscle injury at the Wimbledon Round of 16 match, as per José Morgado of Sport TV Portugal. A right pectoral muscle injury refers to damage to the pectoralis major or pectoralis minor muscle on the right side of the chest. They are caused by strain or tear from sudden, forceful muscle movements, or by tendon rupture. Sinner Reacts To Dimitrov Injury Jannik Sinner reacted to his unexpected win at the match against Grigor Dimitrov saying that he will not consider it a win, despite the scores telling otherwise. He said if Dimitrov progressed to the quarter-final, 'he would honestly deserve it,' and wished a speedy recovery to his 'good friend.' 'I don't know what to say. He (Dimitrov) is an incredible player, we all saw this today. He's been so unlucky in the past couple of years." 'An incredible player and a good friend of mine off the court, seeing him in this way... If he could play in the next round, he would honestly deserve it. I hope he has a speedy recovery, very unlucky from his side and a very unfortunate moment for us to witness. 'I think already in the last grand slams he struggled with injuries, seeing him with this is very tough: his reaction, how much he cares about the sport, he's one of the most hard working on tour. It's very sad, we wish him all the best and give him an applause.'
