Rijiju's remark on NE development is deeply problematic, exposes BJP's mindset: Congress leader
In his statement, Sethi termed the statement 'deeply problematic' and reflective of the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) 'patronising mindset' toward the Northeast. Sethi emphasised that providing roads, jobs, connectivity, drinking water, and security is not a favour but a Constitutional duty of the Prime Minister.
'Union Minister Kiren Rijiju's statement asking the people of the Northeastern region to be 'grateful' to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for basic development and job appointments is deeply problematic and exposes the BJP's patronising mindset toward the region. To set the record straight, the Prime Minister of India is not doing a favour to the Northeast; he is simply performing his Constitutional duty. Roads, jobs, connectivity, drinking water, and security are not gifts from the ruling party; they are entitlements of every citizen in a democracy,' he said.
Highlighting the unresolved Naga Peace Accord, Sethi recalled Prime Minister Modi's 2015 announcement promising a resolution within months and his 'calculated silence.'
'If the Minister would care to recollect, in 2015, Prime Minister Modi pompously declared that a final Naga Peace Accord would be concluded within just a few months, at a time when only 3 or 4 groups were involved in talks. Today, nearly a decade later, the situation has only worsened. Instead of peace, we now have 28 groups in the fray, a dramatic escalation of complexity, confusion, and division. Is this the 'development' that the people of Nagaland or the region are expected to be grateful for? Or do we deserve a candid explanation of how a hastily promised solution has devolved into a prolonged and deepening crisis?' he questioned.
'At the same time, Manipur continues to bleed, and the Prime Minister has remained a silent spectator. Despite over 200 deaths, thousands displaced, and countless homes and churches burnt, PM Modi has not set foot in Manipur since the outbreak of violence. Can a region truly feel supported when its cries are met with calculated silence? Leadership is not about social media statements; it is about standing with your people in their darkest hours. Where was the PM when Manipur needed him the most?' he added in the statement.
Drawing attention to Dimapur, a key economic hub in Nagaland, Sethi highlighted its current state of distress due to severe flooding and a 'complete collapse of basic infrastructure.'
'Meanwhile, in Dimapur, widely regarded as one of the key economic engines not just of Nagaland but the (Northeastern) region at large, the situation on the ground is deeply troubling. The city is at present reeling under the devastating effects of severe flooding and a complete collapse of basic infrastructure. Where is the gratitude supposed to come from when even basic governance is missing? The Congress Party has always believed in serving people, not seeking applause. We do not expect citizens to thank us for doing our job.'
He called for rejecting the 'culture of manufactured gratitude' and demanded accountable, inclusive, and effective governance for the Northeast.
'We want people to question more, demand better, and receive what they deserve, not crumbs handed out with a photo opportunity. Let us reject this culture of manufactured gratitude. Let us demand accountable, inclusive, and effective governance instead,' he said.
On Friday, Kiren Rijiju made remarks in Dimapur, Nagaland, during the Rozgar Mela event, where PM Modi distributed 51,000 appointment letters via video conferencing at 47 locations nationwide on Saturday. (ANI)

The state Cabinet had, last month, decided to conduct a fresh state-wide socio-economic survey and complete it in 90 days as desired by the Congress leadership.'For the first time since 1931, we had data on caste and deprivation. But BJP did not make use of the data effectively for the welfare of the Backward Classes,' the CM said, speaking at the AICC OBC Advisory Council meeting in attacked the BJP and Sangh Parivar saying they polarised India through caste division, while the Congress worked to win back through social unity and constitutional justice.

Govt to table 8 new Bills in monsoon session of Parliament starting July 21
For the monsoon session of Parliament, which begins on July 21, the government has listed eight new Bills, including the Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions), Taxation Laws (Amendment), and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Bills. The session is also set to see the Opposition INDIA bloc parties demand that the government brief Parliament on Operation Sindoor and India's foreign policy, especially with China. They may also seek information on the proposed India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement and US President Donald Trump's repeated claims that he used trade as a bargaining chip to persuade India and Pakistan to end their military conflict. On Tuesday, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, who is also leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, met Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar. 'The Opposition wants a productive Rajya Sabha session from July 21. For that to happen, a number of strategic, political, foreign policy and socio-economic issues that are of great public concern need to be debated and discussed," Kharge said in a post on X after the meeting. The government's 'tentative' list of business for the monsoon session, released by the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha secretariats late Monday evening, does not mention a Bill to amend the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC) of 2016. The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance is currently studying the IBC to recommend to the government ways to make it more robust. In its three meetings on the subject, 'review of working IBC and emerging issues', the panel has tried to understand the perspectives of banks. At its meeting slated for July 29, it will meet representatives of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The government is also set to introduce the Geoheritage Sites and Geo-relics (Preservation and Maintenance), National Sports Governance Bill, and National Anti- Doping (Amendment) Bills. According to the government's list of business, the Mines and Minerals Bill will seek to provide for viable recovery of associated critical minerals, inclusion of contiguous area in a lease for optimal and scientific mining of deep-seated minerals and widening the scope of National Mineral Exploration Trust. The Jan Vishwas Bill seeks to foster ease of doing business and to promote ease of living. The Indian Institutes of Management (Amendment) Bill seeks to include IIM Guwahati in the Schedule of the Act. The Geoheritage Sites and Geo-relics (Preservation and Maintenance) Bill seeks to provide for the declaration, preservation, protection and maintenance of geoheritage sites and geo-relics of national importance for geological studies. The National Sports Governance Bill aims to establish institutional capacity and standards for the governance of sports federations. It would also help establish measures for the resolution of sports grievances and sports disputes. In addition to these Bills, Parliament will also consider some of the pending Bills, including the Income-tax Bill, which was referred to a select committee during the Budget session for further scrutiny. The government will also seek Parliament approval for having extended the President's Rule in Manipur.

Bombay High Court dismisses petition against Rahul Gandhi over remarks on Savarkar
The Bombay High Court on Tuesday (July 15, 2025) rejected and refused to entertain a public interest litigation (PIL) petition alleging that Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi violated the petitioner's rights by making 'immature' remarks about Hindutva ideologue Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. The petition sought the court to issue directions to the Congress leader that he should read his petition and learn about Savarkar before making 'irresponsible' statements. The 125-page petition, filed by Professor Pankaj K. Phadnis, 65, from Mumbai and the founding president of Abhinav Bharat Congress, a public policy think tank, mentioned history and research work by the petitioner on Savarkar. The petitioner said that Mr. Gandhi, in London in March 2023, had tried to paint Savarkar as someone who takes pleasure in the humiliation of Muslims. He further said that Mr. Gandhi tried to portray Savarkar as a coward and in a derogatory reference at a press conference held on March 25, 2023, where he said, 'My name is not Savarkar, I am Gandhi and Gandhi does not make apologies to anyone.' 'Rahul Gandhi is LoP in Lok Sabha and could well become Prime Minister of India in the future. Therefore, he cannot be allowed to take liberties with facts to denigrate respected leaders of freedom struggle and prevent the young from being in a position to fulfil their fundamental duties. The only way to prevent him from causing harm to the nation is by an expert such as the petitioner to step into the box, depose comprehensive facts about Shri Savarkar and allow himself to be cross examined by Rahul Gandhi to establish facts once and for all,' the petitioner said, asking the court to direct Mr. Gandhi to read the contents of his petition and learn about Savarkar. A Division Bench of Chief Justice Alok Aradhe and Justice Sandeep Marne observed that the Supreme Court had already dismissed a similar petition filed by Mr. Phadnis and said that the court could not direct Mr. Gandhi to read the contents of the petition and remove his ignorance about Vinayak Savarkar. 'In your petition, your prayer is to direct him to personally study and read your petition. How can the court compel him to read your petition? This court cannot issue directions to Rahul Gandhi to study the contents of this petition and remove ignorance about the contribution of Savarkar. We do not know if he will become Prime Minister or not. Do you know that he will become the Prime Minister?' the Bench noted and disposed of the petition. The court noted that a criminal defamation case had already been filed against Mr. Gandhi by Satyaki Savarkar, grand nephew of Vinayak Savarkar, and that the same was pending before a special MP/MLA Court in Pune.
