‘Why did he call Parliament session?' asks Congress MP Pramod Tiwari on PM Modi's trip to U.K. and Maldives
Mr. Tiwari on Sunday (July 20, 2025) questioned the Prime Minister's commitment to democracy, suggesting he should review his attendance record in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.
The Congress MP, while talking to ANI, said, 'When the Prime Minister knew that he would be abroad on those dates, why did he call the session? The Prime Minister should look at his attendance as to how many days he attended the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. Our Prime Minister is not serious about democracy.'
The Monsoon Session of Parliament, starting today, July 21, is expected to be intense, with the Opposition's INDIA bloc gearing up to grill the Narendra Modi-led government on several contentious issues.
Flashpoints
Key flashpoints include Operation Sindoor, handling of the Pahalgam terror attack, the Air India Ahmedabad plane crash and the Bihar Electoral Roll Revisions.
Mr. Tiwari emphasised the importance of the Prime Minister's presence in Parliament to address these critical issues, expressing doubts about the government's seriousness in running the House.
He criticised the Centre for bad governance and said that there were important issues the Opposition wanted to raise in the house, and the PM's presence was required.
'Operation Sindoor, the issue of Bihar, the issue of foreign policy. Atrocities against SC women have increased under this government, and we will raise all these issues in the House. We clearly told the government that these issues are important, so the Prime Minister should be present, but I think the government is not serious about running the House', he added further.

No plan to remove 'socialism', 'secularism,' says Centre
New Delhi: The Union government has 'no current plan or intention' to reconsider or remove the words 'socialism' and 'secularism' from the Preamble of the Constitution inserted during the Emergency period, the Rajya Sabha was informed on Thursday. The House was also told that the government has not 'formally' initiated any legal or constitutional process to remove the two words from the Preamble of the Constitution. In a written reply, Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal said while there may be discussions or debates in certain public or political circles, 'no formal decision or proposal has been announced by the government' regarding amendments to these terms. "The government's official stand is that there is no current plan or intention to reconsider or remove the words 'socialism' and 'secularism' from the Preamble of the Constitution. Any discussions regarding amendments to the Preamble would require thorough deliberation and broad consensus, but as of now, the government has not initiated any formal process to change these provisions," the minister asserted. He pointed out that in November 2024, the Supreme Court had also dismissed petitions challenging the 1976 amendment (42nd Constitutional Amendment), which affirmed that Parliament's power to amend the Constitution extends to the Preamble. The court clarified that 'socialism' in the Indian context signifies a welfare state and does not impede private sector growth, while 'secularism' is integral to the Constitution's basic structure.

Indian Railways: How many passengers travelled by train in last six years?
Indian Railways passengers data: Indian Railways (IR) remains one of the most preferred modes of transportation in the country. Over the past decade, the Ministry of Railways has undertaken several initiatives to enhance connectivity including – the launch of modern trains like Vande Bharat and Amrit Bharat, doubling of railway lines, construction of new tracks, and the redevelopment of stations, among others. Earlier this week, Congress MP Imran Masood raised a question to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw regarding the number of passengers who have travelled by train since 2019. In response, Vaishnaw stated that train occupancy is not uniform throughout the year. He explained that passenger numbers fluctuate depending on lean and peak travel periods. 'On Indian Railways, the occupancy pattern of trains is not uniform throughout the year, and it varies over lean and peak periods. During peak rush periods, the occupancy of the trains, especially on popular routes, remains full whereas during lean periods and on less popular routes, there is sub optimal utilization,' Vaishnaw added. A total of 3349 crore passengers travelled in Indian Railways (IR) during last six years (i.e. 2019-20 to 2024-25) which included 418 crore reserved and 2,931 crore unreserved class passengers (2020-21 and 2021-22 were COVID years). Elaborating further, Vaishnaw said, 'To cater to the rush during Durga Pooja/Deepawali/Chhath, 7,990 trips of Special trains were operated during the period 1st October,2024 to 30th November, 2024, to serve approximately 1.8 crore passengers. With a view to facilitate the passengers during the recently concluded Maha Kumbh, IR operated more than 17,300 trains during the period 13th January, 2025 to 28th February, 2025, which served approximately 4.24 crore passengers.' The national transporter also increased the facilities for passengers demanding general class travel. A look at how many passengers travelled by general coaches in the last five financial years.
