How ‘Black, White & Gray' raises the crime saga bar

India Today20-05-2025
(NOTE: This article was originally published in the India Today issue dated May 26, 2025)An intelligent filmmaker knows that all stories have been told already, and a fresh story means fresh storytelling. Case in point: the new Sony LIV Hindi series Black, White & Gray—Love Kills. Written, directed and edited by Pushkar Sunil Mahabal, the Rashomon-like six-episode series is part true crime mockumentary, part chase thriller, and full metafiction. What could have been a straightforward crime story is explored as a fake documentary looking into the aftermath of the crime, juxtaposed with its dramatic re-enactment. This style coaxes us to question the ethics of the true crime genre, and the intersections of caste, class and gender across which crimes occur.advertisement
A politician's daughter and the son of the politician's driver sneak out one night to have sex in a hotel. Later, CCTV footage suggests that the man has killed the woman and escaped with her body. The police allege that the man goes on to murder a cop and two others in his killing spree. The man has been absconding for two years. The series is framed as a project by a western filmmaker visiting India. His mockumentary features interviews with friends and relatives of the victims, while the dramatic re-enactment shows what could have gone down between the man, the woman, and the three other victims. The filmmaker reveals his trump card at the end of episode one: he has tracked down and interviewed the accused.advertisementOne of the most innovative Indian series in a long time, Black, White & Gray... is true gonzo filmmaking. At a time of despair in the Mumbai film industry over its products' staleness and commercial failures, Mahabal proves that imagination is all it takes.Subscribe to India Today MagazineTrending Reel

Maa Box Office Collection Day 10: Kajol's Horror Thriller Crosses Rs 30-Crore Mark

Kajol's first horror film, Maa, released on June 27, 2025, has been performing well at the box office. By the second Sunday, it crossed the Rs 30 crore mark. Kajol's first horror movie Maa is doing really well in theatres! The film, which released on June 27, has been getting a great response from the audience. Even in its second week, it's pulling in strong numbers. On Sunday (July 6), Maa crossed the Rs 30 crore mark at the box office. Maa seems to be picking up pace again at the box office. As per early numbers from Sacnilk, the film earned Rs 2.35 crore on its 10th day (Sunday), showing a clear jump from Saturday's collection of Rs 1.75 crore. Thanks to the weekend boost, the Kajol-starrer has now crossed the Rs 30 crore milestone, bringing its total earnings to Rs 31.60 crore. The film has managed to stay strong through its second week. Directed by Vishal Furia, Maa has held its own despite facing tough competition from biggies like Sitaare Zameen Par and Kannappa. Maa had opened with Rs 4.65 crore on its first day. In Maa, a mythological horror thriller, Kajol takes on the powerful role of Ambika, a fearless mother who will stop at nothing to protect her daughter from dark, supernatural forces. The film blends myth and mystery, marking Kajol's first foray into the horror genre. Alongside her, the cast includes Indraneil Sengupta, Jitin Gulati, and Kherin Sharma. Directed by Vishal Furia, Maa is backed by producers Ajay Devgn and Jyoti Subbarayan. A part of the review of Maa by News18 read, 'The concept and story have substance, but the film lacked largely because of its style of storytelling. Besides, the film also has a lot of stereotypes that could have been done without. Besides the exaggeration that the palace had a almost 30-feet tall Kali maa's stone carved statue, the way people from Chandrapur talk in the film, everything seems to be a cliche that all the Bengalis would be running away from. It only gets disappointing to see Ronit Roy, who plays a vital part in the film, deliver all his Hindi dialogues with such a heavy Bengali accent. A lot would argue that it is not how people from Bengal speak when they talk in Hindi." First Published:

'Show Some Sensitivity': Congress Attacks Kangana Over 'No Cabinet' Remark In Flood-Hit Mandi

The Congress party slammed BJP MP Kangana Ranaut and said her comments on the flood situation in Himachal Pradesh were "insensitive". The Congress party on Sunday slammed BJP Lok Sabha MP from Mandi, Kangana Ranaut, after she paid a visit to her rain-ravaged constituency and said that she does not have any official Cabinet to provide disaster relief. Terming the remarks by the actor-politician 'insensitive", the Congress opined that Kangana should show sensitivity to the situation in Himachal Pradesh and those affected by floods and landslides. In an X post, the Congress shared a byte by Kangana and wrote, 'In Mandi, Himachal Pradesh, a cloudburst has caused massive destruction. People are distressed, their everything has been ruined." 'Mandi's MP Kangana arrived there after several days and, laughing, said- 'What can I do, I don't have a cabinet position'. Please show some sensitivity, Kangana ji," a rough translation of the party's post in Hindi suggested. हिमाचल प्रदेश के मंडी में बादल फटने से भारी तबाही हुई है. लोग परेशान हैं, उनका सब कुछ उजड़ गया है.मंडी की सांसद कंगना कई दिन बाद वहां पहुंचीं और हंसते हुए कहा- 'मैं क्या कर सकती हूं, मेरे पास कैबिनेट तो है नहीं' कुछ तो संवेदना दिखाइए कंगना जी — Congress (@INCIndia) July 6, 2025 WHAT KANGANA RANAUT SAID Addressing reporters over the situation in Mandi, Kangana said, 'I don't have any official cabinet when it comes to disaster relief or the disaster itself." 'I have my two brothers who are always with me. That's my cabinet. So, it's just these two," she added. 'The relief and restoration works have to be done by the state government, and as an MP, I can only apprise the Prime Minister and the Home Minister about the situation and seek liberal assistance," Ranaut told reporters. 'We are the link between the state and the central government, instrumental in getting projects from the centre to the state and raising issues and grievances of our constituencies with the centre," she said. 'How the state government is functioning, I can say that Congress will not come to power in the state for the next 20 years," she added. Earlier, in an X post, Kangana wrote, 'It is heartbreaking to see massive flood devastation in Himachal almost every year now. I tried reaching the flood-affected areas in Seraj and other areas in Mandi, but was advised by the respected Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur to wait until the connectivity to the affected areas is restored." Kangana took stock of the situation in Mandi on Sunday and asserted that the way relief work is being undertaken, the Congress will not return to power in the state in even 20 years. She also said that as an MP, she could only apprise the prime minister of the situation. 'I am deeply pained to see the plight of the people. They have lost family members, houses have been washed away, several people are still missing, but we can only console the families who have lost their kin, and now it is time to provide relief." RAIN WREAKS HAVOC IN HIMACHAL Fourteen people have died, and a search is on for 31 missing, as cloudbursts, flash floods, and landslides caused massive destruction. About 200 roads have been rendered out of bounds for traffic, while 236 transformers and 278 supply schemes have been disrupted in Mandi district as of Sunday morning, according to the state emergency operation centre.
