Congress slams BJP over hike in trade fee, solid waste cess in Karnataka's Puttur CMC; calls move anti-poor, unjust to small traders

Congress councillors, led by MLA Ashok Rai, convened an emergency meeting on Tuesday to condemn the move. They alleged that the BJP-led administration doubled the trade fee and solid waste cess, disproportionately affecting marginal traders and low-income vendors.
Terming the decision as anti-poor, the Congress members stated that the hike would make life more difficult for those who already operate on thin margins, some with daily business of barely Rs 3,000.
While clarifying they are not opposed to taxing large enterprises, they said applying the same fee hike to small traders is unjustified and unacceptable.
The members also accused the BJP of misleading the public by claiming that the increase was mandated by the state govt. Congress clarified that no such directive was issued and said the BJP was trying to divert public anger by blaming the Congress-led state govt.
"This hike is not in effect anywhere else. The BJP in Puttur introduced it arbitrarily, and now they are trying to pass the blame. The Congress party will launch a protest against the fee revision,' the MLA said, adding that the party will not remain silent in the face of injustice to the poor.
Councillors Riaz Parladka, Shaila Pai, nominated members Basheer Parladka, Sharif Balnadu, Sharada Aras, Block Congress President Krishnaprasad Alva, and KPCC General Secretary M S Mohammed were present at the meeting.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Friday termed as 'baseless and irresponsible' Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's claim his party had uncovered an 'atom bomb' of evidence proving voters lists were manipulated on a large scale, and said that it ignores such statements. 'What we found is an atom bomb. When it explodes, you won't be able to see the Election Commission in India.' The Leader of Opposition said the party began investigating after noticing irregularities during the Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Lok Sabha elections. He alleged that over 10 million voters were fraudulently added to the rolls. 'There was a suspicion in the elections in Madhya Pradesh and the Lok Sabha, and it deepened in the Maharashtra assembly polls. At the state level, we believed there was a vote theft,' Gandhi said. 'It took us six months to study this in detail.' Gandhi issued a warning: 'Whoever is doing this, from top to bottom in the ECI, we won't spare you. You're working against the nation. This is treason.' In response, ECI said, 'The Election Commission ignores such baseless allegations being made on a daily basis and despite the daily threats being given, (it) asks all election officials to ignore such irresponsible statements and work in a fair and transparent manner.' ECI said it had sent a mail to Gandhi on June 12 after previous allegations, but had not received a response. The latest accusation comes amid a broader protest by the opposition INDIA bloc over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of Bihar's electoral rolls, which they claim is a BJP-backed attempt to disenfranchise voters. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge had also blamed the poll body on July 6, saying, 'With the cooperation of the Election Commission, the BJP's master plan to deprive crores in Bihar of their voting rights now seems to be ensnaring them. He said the Opposition party speaks of such things because they have no faith in democracy. 'We are those who have faith in democracy. Rising construction costs hinder progress of PMAY-G scheme in Mys and Ch'nagar
Mysuru: The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana- Gramin (PMAY-G), the flagship rural housing scheme aimed at providing houses to the homeless in rural areas, is facing significant delays in the twin districts of Mysuru and Chamarajanagar, largely due to the soaring cost of construction materials and labour. In Mysuru district, 20,908 houses were sanctioned for the fiscal year 2024-25. However, only 64.4% progress has been achieved so far, while Chamarajanagar district achieved only 27.2% progress. Against the target of constructing 20,908 houses in Mysuru district, 13,462 beneficiaries have taken up the construction of their houses after receiving the allotment letter. The remaining 7,466 beneficiaries who were identified are still waiting for the allotment sanction letter. In Chamarajanagar district, of the 39,317 houses targeted for construction this fiscal, only 10,681 have been sanctioned. That leaves a backlog of 28,636 houses yet to be built in the district. Houseless people living in kutcha houses with walls and roofs made out of mud, grass, and other non-durable materials, living in one room, were identified as beneficiaries. Under the scheme, the Union govt provides Rs 1.2 lakh grants for the construction of a house for general category candidates and Rs 1.8 lakh for SC/ST beneficiaries. In addition to this, the beneficiaries can also claim Rs 31,410 for 90 days of work under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) scheme. The ZP also provides Rs 12,000 to general category candidates for the construction of individual toilets and Rs 20,000 for SC/ST beneficiaries separately under the Swachh Bharat Mission. "Govt must increase the grants provided for the construction of houses under the scheme as beneficiaries struggle to complete the construction of houses with less grants of Rs 1.2 lakh for the general category and Rs 1.8 lakh for SC/STs when prices of steel, cement, labour charges, and other construction materials and expenditures are increasing day by day," said HM Sambram, former president of Benakanahalli GP of T Narasipura taluk. Speaking to TOI, Mysuru zilla panchayat chief executive officer S Ukesh Kumar said Mysuru district stood first in the state in the implementation of the scheme when compared to other districts. "Some other districts achieved only 10%," he stated. The CEO said all panchayat development officers will be instructed to expedite the construction of the houses under the scheme.
