Brawl Between Priest, Police Official Over Loudspeaker During Kanpur Rath Yatra, Cop Suspended

News185 hours ago

The dispute erupted between police and the priest over the installation of additional sound systems for the procession.
A dispute broke out between a temple priest and a police officer after the latter allegedly misbehaved with the priest over the installation of loudspeakers during Lord Jagannath Rath Yatra in Uttar Pradesh' Kanpur on Friday.
The priest, Mahant Jitendra Das of Panki Hanuman Temple, had allegedly threatened to self-immolate if police didn't allow the Rath Yatra to proceed without removing additional sound systems. This prompted the senior officials to place station officer of the Badshahi Naka police station under suspension, news agency PTI reported.
According to Mahant Jitendra Das and Krishna Das of Jagannath temple, before the Rath Yatra could begin, police officials arrived and instructed that only two speakers should be used in the band. Organisers opposed this and during the conversation, the police allegedly misbehaved with them.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Satyajit Gupta said that Station Officer (Badshahi Naka) Rajiv Kumar has been put under suspension for allegedly misbehaving with Das and also abusing him.
'We have had a conversation with Yatra coordinators. The SHO of Badshahi Naka has allegedly attempted misconduct and hurled abuses. It was said that until he is suspended, 'Shobha Yatra' will not be started… Keeping all this in consideration, I will be taking action for suspension…," he said.
He further appealed the organisers and devotees to continue with the Rath Yatra as it was already delayed.
'We have made an appeal to the mahant, devotees and others to take out the Jagannath Rath Yatra without removing the additional sound systems as it is already delayed and the removal of the additional sound systems will lead to a further delay. A request has also been made to maintain peace and not pay attention to rumours," the DCP added.
As a precautionary measure, reserved police forces and personnel from neighbouring police stations were deployed along the procession route.
What's The Row?
The dispute erupted between police and the priest over the installation of additional sound systems for the procession. According to local residents, devotees got anguished over the demand, following which they sat on a dharna at Nayaganj.
Das told reporters that the officer, along with police personnel from Nayaganj, arrived at the spot and asked them to carry only two speakers with the procession, when they were preparing to take out the Jagannath Rath Yatra at 1 pm.
'When we opposed this, saying no senior official had issued any such instruction, the police personnel misbehaved with us," he said.
Irked by the alleged misbehaviour of the police personnel, supporters of the priest started raising slogans against police. Officials tried to pacify the priest and his supporters, but they were adamant on their demand that the SO should be placed under suspension.
The priest had gave an ultimatum that if no action was taken against the erring police personnel by 8 pm, he would set himself on fire, which prompted top officials to swing into action.
The Jagannath Rath Yatra was taken out around 8 pm, after the SO was suspended.

Day after beginning of Rath Yatra in Puri, chariots of deities reach 'aunt's place'

Puri, The chariots of sibling deities - Lord Balabhadra, Devi Subhadra and Lord Jagannath - on Saturday reached the destination Gundicha Temple, a day after the Rath Yatra began in Puri. Day after beginning of Rath Yatra in Puri, chariots of deities reach 'aunt's place' Gundicha Temple is considered the aunt's place of the deities who go there every year after leaving the 12th-century Jagannath temple, situated at a distance of 2.6 km. They will go back to the main temple after nine days. The return car journey, known as 'Bahuda Yatra', will held this year on 5 July. Earlier in the day, amid chanting of 'Jai Jagannath' & 'Hari bol', devotees resumed pulling the three chariots around 10 am, after the Rath Yatra was halted on June 27 night. The chariots were scheduled to reach Gundicha temple by the evening of Friday. But they had to be stopped on Grand Road as Lord Balabhadra's Taladwaja chariot got stuck while negotiating a turn, preventing the other two from advancing. According to the tradition, 'Taladwaj' rolls first, followed by 'Darpadalan' of Devi Subhadra and 'Nandighosh' of Lord Jagannath. The chariots with deities inside were kept on the road overnight amid tight security. Thousands of devotees who spent the night in the holy town, joined in large numbers in chariot pulling amid sounds of gongs and conches. Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan, Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja, DGP YB Khurania and other senior officials were found pulling Lord Jagannath's 'Nandighosh'. After the chariots reached their destination, they were parked outside the Gundicha temple. The deities will be taken inside the temple on Sunday in a ceremonial procession. "We thank all stakeholders including devotees for the conduct of Rath Yatra,' Arabinda Padhee, the chief administrator of Shree Jagannath Temple Administration said. Meanwhile, all arrangements have been made for the security of the chariots and controlling the crowd, said DGP YB Khurania. Meanwhile, over 600 devotees were treated at different hospitals in Puri after becoming ill during the Rath Yatra on Saturday. While many of them were injured due to jostling, more than 200 people fainted in the hot and humid weather conditions. An estimated one million devotees participated in the annual Rath Yatra on Friday and around 5 lakh people were in the holy town on Saturday, officials said adding that the weather was favourable on Saturday even though there was light rain. The Rath Yatra is being held amid unprecedented security arrangements with the deployment of around 10,000 personnel of Odisha Police, the central armed police force, NSG and others. The police have made all arrangements for the smooth conduct of Rath Yatra, a senior official said adding that over 275 AI-enabled CCTV cameras were installed to keep a watch on the crowd. 'Preamble not changeable': VP Dhankhar weighs in on Constitution debate; calls for 'reflection'

NEW DELHI: Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Saturday called the Preamble as the soul of the constitution. Speaking at a book launch event, Dhankhar acknowledged that India was the only country where the Preamble had been amended, a reference to the 42nd Amendment enacted during the Emergency in 1976. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now 'But this Preamble was changed by the 42nd Constitution (Amendment) Act of 1976,' he said, as quoted by news agency PTI. 'We must reflect. B R Ambedkar did painstaking work on the Constitution and he must have surely focussed on it," PTI quoted the VP saying. The Vice President's came following comments by RSS general secretary Dattatreya Hosabale, who questioned the legitimacy of the inclusion of 'secular' and 'socialist' in the Preamble — a position that has drawn sharp criticism from the opposition. On Thursday, Hosabale stirred political waters by arguing at an event marking the 50th anniversary of the Emergency that 'secular' and 'socialist' were inserted into the Constitution during a period of authoritarian rule and should now be reviewed. He said these terms were not part of the original draft authored by Dr B R Ambedkar and were forcibly added during a time when civil liberties were crushed and democratic institutions undermined. BJP leaders including Union ministers Jitendra Singh and Shivraj Singh Chouhan said any 'right-thinking citizen' would support such a review. 'The word secularism was added during the Emergency. It should be removed. The country should think about this,' Chouhan said, arguing that equality of all religions is already the Indian ethos. Shiv Sena leader Shaina NC echoed the sentiment, suggesting that terms like 'pseudo-secularism' have undermined India's democratic principles. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Rahul Gandhi: 'RSS wants Manusmriti, not Constitution' Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi accused the RSS-BJP of harbouring a hidden agenda to dismantle the Constitution and deny the poor and marginalised their rights. 'RSS-BJP doesn't want the Constitution. They want Manusmriti. They aim to strip the marginalised and the poor of their rights and enslave them again,' he posted on X. Congress MP Jairam Ramesh accused the RSS of never accepting the Constitution. 'The RSS has NEVER accepted the Constitution of India... The RSS and the BJP have repeatedly given the call for a new Constitution. This was Mr Modi's campaign cry during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections,' he posted on X.
