Dark mode comes to ExpressVPN – here's how to get it

Tom's Guide23-06-2025
ExpressVPN has unveiled its new Themes feature for its iOS and Android apps. The app can now be viewed in dark mode, something ExpressVPN described as "much anticipated."
The provider's UI makes it one of the best VPNs out there and these updates give users a more customizable VPN experience.
The new features follow an overhaul of the ExpressVPN UI back in May. Amongst other updates, the app was redesigned to include a map and a speed test tool was added.
The biggest news from this small update is the introduction of dark mode for ExpressVPN's iOS apps. The feature, which was already available on Android, is known as Twilight mode and is designed to reduce eye strain in low-light environments.
Themes allow you to personalize your ExpressVPN mobile interface. As well as Twilight, other mode options include Sand, Midnight, Sky, and System Default.
You can also edit the ExpressVPN app icon. The choices are Classic, Dynamic, Neon, and Grey.
You can select your preferred customization in the Appearance section of the Profile tab. You can also edit directly from the home screen by clicking the edit symbol in the top right of the screen.
ExpressVPN said it wanted to "combine functionality with user-centric design" and make its app "more comfortable and visually accessible" through in-app customization options.
Themes is available to all iOS users now and will reach all Android users this week. Ensure you have updated your ExpressVPN app to receive the new appearances.
Shay Peretz, Chief Information Officer at ExpressVPN, said: "The introduction of Themes is the next step in our continued commitment to product improvement at ExpressVPN."
"Following a host of recent user interface improvements, we hope this new feature will give even greater usability to our mobile users."
"Whether you're using ExpressVPN at night, during travel, or just prefer a different look, the new options including 'Sky' and 'Twilight' ensure your experience is smooth, stylish, and easier on the eyes."
"Security and style can – and should – go hand in hand. We remain committed to both, with privacy continuing to be our top priority."
ExpressVPN has the best mobile VPN apps of any provider. Simplicity is a key part of what ExpressVPN does. When you open the app, you're greeted with a big on/off button.
Click it, and you'll be connected to the "best server" for you and that's it – your data is protected.
But behind this simplicity lies a fairly customizable app. The row of tabs at the bottom of the screen allow you to easily access settings, a speed test, and help. You can select one of ExpressVPN's 3,000+ servers easily from the home screen and its new map clearly shows you where in the world you're connected to.
ExpressVPN is our choice for the best iPhone VPN and it sits at number two on our best Android VPN list. You can protect up to 8 devices with post-quantum encryption and the Lightway protocol makes ExpressVPN super fast.
At $4.99 per month, ExpressVPN isn't one of the best cheap VPNs. But you'll get a quality VPN packed full of features.

Grok's AI companions drove downloads, but its latest model is the one making money

Grok's raunchy, unfiltered AI companions may be making headlines for their unhinged and often NSFW responses, but it's Grok 4, xAI's latest model, that's been driving the app's revenue of late. Elon Musk's xAI launched Grok 4 late on July 9, and by Friday, July 11, Grok's gross revenue on iOS had jumped a whopping 325% to $419,000, up from $99,000 the day before the Grok 4 launch, according to app intelligence firm Appfigures. Image Credits:Appfigures Grok continued to pull in higher-than-usual revenue in the days following the launch of the new model, with gross revenue in the high $367,000s for a couple of days before dipping down to $310,000 on July 14. In addition, daily downloads of the Grok iOS app had increased 279% to 197,000 by July 11, up from 52,000 before Grok 4 launched. But following the addition of Grok's AI companions the next week, on July 14, the jump in downloads and revenue was less pronounced. While curiosity about the companions likely drove more installs, the feature isn't yet poised to be a significant money-maker for the company, despite being only available to 'Super Grok' subscribers paying $30 per month. Grok's iOS downloads globally were up 40% the day after the companions launched, reaching 171,000 daily installs, but revenue increased just 9%, hitting $337,000. So while it's clear that there was an impact from the launch, it's decidedly smaller than the launch of the new AI model. San Francisco | REGISTER NOW Image Credits:Appfigures Given Grok's expensive new subscription offering, timed alongside the Grok 4 launch, it's not surprising to see that even a smaller increase in the number of paying subscribers could drive Grok's iOS revenue significantly higher. The company announced that, in addition to Grok 4 and Grok 4 Heavy, it would also offer a $300-per-month subscription called SuperGrok Heavy, its priciest plan to date. The plan offers subscribers early access to Grok 4 Heavy and other new features, xAI said, but it's more expensive than comparable plans from other major AI providers, including OpenAI, Google and Anthropic. It's interesting to see this demand for Grok's subscription plans, even though the AI was initially consulting Elon Musk's X posts for answers. xAI has since addressed this issue. Image Credits:Appfigures Interest in the new model also drove up Grok's ranking on the U.S. App Store shortly after its launch, making Grok the No. 3 top app overall, and No. 2 in the Productivity category by July 12. That interest has declined somewhat over the past week — the app is now No. 17 overall — though it's still No. 2 in Productivity, Appfigures data shows. Appfigures notes that it focused on iOS data for this analysis, as that data set is currently more comprehensive than data from Android devices. The latter is only available through July 14 for the time being, as Appfigures' model needs more time to process Google Play data.

Apple Reportedly Releasing Foldable iPhones Next Year

Apple's foldable smartphones will look similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold line, according to a new report. Apple is reportedly working on its first foldable iPhone, putting the company head-to-head with Samsung, a rival that has pioneered foldable phones since 2019, and Google, which unveiled the Pixel Fold in 2023. Bloomberg managing editor Mark Gurman, who has an 86.5% accuracy rate when it comes to Apple rumors, reported on Sunday that Apple will enter the foldable phone market in the latter half of 2026. With products like the iPhone and Apple Watch, Apple entered each market early and helped shape what the mainstream version of the product would look like. With the foldable iPhone, Apple will take a different approach, using what works for Samsung instead of creating a dramatically new interface or developing innovative hardware. Gurman reported that Apple's device will look similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold line and incorporate many of the same parts, including foldable OLED screens. Related: 'Powerful, More Affordable Option': Apple Reveals Its New Budget iPhone 16e, the iPhone SE's Successor Apple will still aim to improve parts of Samsung's design, tackling the weaknesses of foldable devices like the visible inner display crease and the inner hinge mechanism. The iPhone maker will also introduce new software features next year, specifically designed for foldable phones. The price point of an Apple foldable phone will be at least $2,000, Gurman reports, which is similar to offerings from Samsung and Google. Samsung's latest Z Fold 7 is priced at $1,999, while the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold is $1,799. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 smartphone. Photographer: Michael Nagle/Bloomberg via Getty Images Sales of the Samsung Z Fold 7 are higher than the previous generation, per Bloomberg, and it's received positive reviews from tech sites. Windows Central called it "a winner," while Mashable praised the phone's "almost unbelievably sleek form factor." Samsung announced the phone earlier this month, and it will be available for purchase starting this Friday. Though Apple's foldable iPhone may look similar to Samsung's, it could still benefit from Apple's reach. Apple holds 57% of the U.S. smartphone market as of the first quarter of the year, compared to Samsung's 25%, per Counterpoint Research. However, Samsung has historically dominated the global foldable smartphone market, selling over 66% of the 15.9 million foldable phones sold in 2023, per TrendForce. Related: Apple Is Reportedly Creating New Foldable iPads and iPhones. Here Are the Details. Foldable phones are a niche category, having never accounted for more than 2% of the smartphone market as a whole, per Counterpoint Research. Gurman suggests that Apple could make it mainstream when it enters the category next year. Apple is the third most valuable company in the world, at the time of writing, with a market capitalization of $3.2 trillion. Quip is a smart clipboard management app for iOS and Mac

Developers of Unite, an app that offers customized web app management on Mac, on Monday released a new app called Quip, a clipboard app for the Apple ecosystem. The app includes features for organizing text clips, support for shortcuts to trigger text snippets, duplicate prevention, and code formatting, among other things. Its goal is to offer users more control and customization compared with the traditional clipboard, making it a more productive alternative. Quip is non-intrusive — on Mac, it lives on the menu bar and, on iOS, it has a special keyboard — and maintains a history of all things that you copy across devices as a universal clipboard. You can easily search through the history and also customize the timeframe to keep items stored, along with max items and maximum item size. You can filter through these items by text, links, images, code, files, and recency. Quip allows you to add clipboard items to collections to easily access them later. Plus, you can make smart collections to automatically add certain clipboard items to those collections. Image Credits: Quip As the app accesses all kinds of data, the company has built customizable privacy controls. By default, the app ignores data such as passwords, credit cards, and personally identifiable data for its clip history. It will also ignore temporary data, including cache, auto-generated data, and debug information. You can customize this further and instruct the app to ignore certain apps and keywords for the clipboard. Image Credits: Quip One of the useful features of the app is the 'supershortcut,' which allows you to define short phrases for text expansion. For instance, you can write your address in a 'supershortcut' and use the trigger keyword 'addr' to paste details anywhere. This works for links and code, too. Image Credits: Quip What's more, the app has some smart features, including cleaning up URLs, preventing duplicate entries in history, cleaning up white spaces, and automatically formatting code. Image Credits: Quip The app supports Apple's continuity Camera feature, allowing you to post sketches, documents, or photos from iPhone to Mac using the menubar app. The app's developer, Binyamin Goldman, said the company is using older Apple NLP (Natural Language Processing) capabilities for on-device intelligent features on the app. He said that, later this year, it will switch to Apple's offline AI models to explore more capabilities. Goldman previously only did partial development work on the apps his company created, he told TechCrunch over email. However, he has done the majority of work on Quip thanks to AI tools like Cursor and Claude, he says. You can try Quip for free for two weeks and pay $14.99 per year to get access to apps across iOS, iPadOS, and macOS. You can also buy a standalone license for the Mac app for $19.99.
