Meanwhile, the Punjab government on Monday announced four Eid holidays from Friday to June 9.
The data shared in the meeting revealed that 92 people had died in 140 incidents of drowning reported in Punjab during May.
As many as 436 people died in 39,978 road traffic crashes in the province during the month. Of the road accidents, 7,384 occurred in Lahore, in which 38 people died, followed by 2,671 in Faisalabad, 2,527 in Multan, 2,139 in Gujranwala, 1,491 in Sheikhupura and 1,290 in Bahawalpur. The number of fire emergencies reported in Lahore was 602, Faisalabad 300, Gujranwala 206, Sialkot 187, Sheikhupura 184 and Rawalpindi 174.
The secretary said the emergency services department had rescued 211,354 victims during the month.

PMD Director General Mahr Sahibzad Khan said that while most rivers in Pakistan remain stable, the Chenab River faces a possible flood threat. The Ravi River, he noted, is currently safe due to available storage in Indian dams. "There's no flood threat in the Jhelum and Sutlej rivers at present, but the Chenab is at risk," Khan told The Express Tribune. "Flooding could occur if India releases excess water. However, our dams currently have sufficient capacity to manage inflows." Khan added that the ongoing monsoon spell would continue until Friday, July 25, followed by another wet spell at the end of the month. He warned that persistent rainfall, especially in northern areas, could heighten flood risks. "The rainfall is improving dam levels, but the threat remains. Another weather system is expected later this month, which may bring more intense rain," he cautioned. Despite its minimal contribution to global carbon emissions, Pakistan remains one of the countries most vulnerable to climate change. Khan attributed increasing weather unpredictability, cloudbursts, and glacial melt to global climate shifts. "Pakistan's contribution to air pollution is negligible, yet we are among the hardest hit by climate change," he said. "Extreme rainfall and rapid glacier melt are creating hazardous conditions." Addressing recent flooding in Islamabad's Saidpur Village and Chakwal, Khan clarified that these were not cloudburst events. "A cloudburst is defined by over 100mm of rainfall in one hour. In Saidpur, it was prolonged heavy rain over 24 hours," he explained. "The flooding was aggravated by illegal constructions blocking natural drainage channels." "Pakistan's contribution to air pollution is negligible, yet we are among the hardest hit by climate change," he said. "Extreme rainfall and rapid glacier melt are creating hazardous conditions." GLOF Alert The Met Office has issued a high-alert warning for Glacial Lake Outburst Floods in Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B) and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P), where rapid glacier melt and heavy rains threaten to trigger flash floods. "Glacial melt combined with intense rain may cause sudden river surges and flooding in low-lying areas," the Met Department stated in its daily report. It advised all relevant disaster management authorities to remain on high alert.

100 boats deployed for monsoon emergencies

PHOTO: ONLINE Punjab Emergency Service (Rescue 1122) is on high alert to respond to any untoward situation during the ongoing monsoon and flood emergencies, Emergency Services Secretary Dr Rizwan Naseer said while addressing a press briefing. He said Rescue 1122's flood response units, including over 100 boats, 312 trained rescuers, OBM engines and emergency equipment, have been deployed in vulnerable and low-lying areas across the province. Dr Naseer urged citizens to monitor rooftops and surroundings during rainfall to avoid loss of life or property due to water accumulation. He said 1,594 people have been rescued during the current rain spell.

Security arrangements for Muharram, preparedness for floods discussed
LAHORE: Provincial Minister for Health and Emergency Services Khawaja Salman Rafique visited the Rescue Headquarters and reviewed the arrangements made during Muharram-ul-Haram. Secretary Emergency Services Dr. Rizwan Naseer gave a briefing. The Provincial Minister had a special conversation with Rescue 1122 Water and Rescue Team Attock through video link. Khawaja Salman Rafique congratulated Khurram Ramzan rescuer and other rescue teams Attock for saving the life of a person trapped in the river. The minister also announced to give Khurram Ramzan an additional salary. Salman Rafique said that according to the vision of Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif, the Emergency Services Department of Punjab is providing the best services to the people. Rescue 1122 teams were always ready ahead of time for every challenge. In the past years, Rescue 1122 teams have always been ready ahead of time during floods and Muharram, he said. Khawaja Salman Rafique said that flood and rescue teams have been deployed in Sialkot, Narowal, Gujranwala, Dera Ghazi Khan and Rajanpur in view of the threat of flash flooding. Special rescue boats have been deployed in Mianwali for the safety of zaireen crossing the river. I will be in the field with you rescuers during Muharram and floods. Regarding the flood, Rescue 1122 is ready throughout Punjab. 850 rescue boat engines with boat operators, 1300 life jackets, 156 scuba sets and essential equipment are on alert throughout Punjab. Mock exercises are underway across Punjab while coordination with the district level administration has been completed. Community Emergency Response Team (Rescue Scouts/Volunteers) are on high alert in the affected areas. Moreover, Salman who is also Chairman Cabinet Committee on Law and Order visited the control room of the Home Department. He reviewed the live monitoring of the main processions and gatherings across the province from the control room of the Interior Department. Secretary Interior Dr. Ahmed Javed Qazi gave a briefing on the current situation across the province. Khawaja Salman Rafique contacted the control room of the Home Department in the control rooms across Punjab one by one and took the report. On this occasion, Khawaja Salman Rafique said that Muharram-ul-Haram is being celebrated with complete devotion, respect and peace across Punjab. More than 37,000 majalis and about 10,000 processions are being monitored in Punjab. Geo-tagging has been done on the map of majalis and processions across Punjab and monitoring is ongoing with cameras. Punjab cabinet ministers are visiting all districts and supervising the arrangements. The Cyber Patrol Cell of the Home Department is taking action against those involved in sectarianism. Accounts of those spreading sectarianism on social media are being blocked and arrests are being made. People involved in mischief on social media are being dealt with iron hands.
