Manipur: Police seize 86 weapons, 974 ammunition; anti-riot guns, IEDs also recovered
NEW DELHI: Manipur police and the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) on Tuesday recovered 86 weapons and 974 ammunition in the hill state, which has in the past couple of years witnessed deadly ethnic conflict.
In the joint operations, the forces seized grenades, IEDs, AK series & INSAS rifles, pistols, anti-riot guns and SBBL, in the areas of Imphal East, Imphal West, Thoubal, Kakching, and Bishnupur district, reported news agency ANI, citing the Office of Manipur DGP.

On the night of July 3 and the early morning of July 4, in a similar operation, Manipur police recovered over 200 weapons during a massive search operation carried out across the state's hill districts.
The raids are part of ongoing efforts to curb illegal arms and restore peace in the region. The police recovered a large cache of arms and ammunition in search operations, as law and order remain stable in the state.
These operations are part of a broader crackdown launched by the Manipur Police, Assam Rifles, Army and Central Armed Police Forces.
Last week, the Manipur Police arrested nine people, including six members of the Meitei organisation Arambai Tenggol and three militants of a banned outfit.

All the arrests were made in the Bishnupur district.
The six Arambai Tenggol members were involved in physically assaulting state police personnel during a bandh in Bishnupur district on June 9, a police statement said.
Since ethnic violence broke out in the state in May 2023, Manipur has witnessed at least 260 deaths and is currently under President's rule. The strife between the Meitei and Kuki communities also rendered thousands of people homeless, forcing them to stay in relief camps.

The Manipur Police, in coordination with Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), the Army, and Assam Rifles, recovered 86 weapons and several rounds of ammunition in a series of coordinated search operations on Tuesday. The recovery was made during search operations conducted across multiple valley districts based on specific intelligence inputs regarding the peripheral and vulnerable areas of Imphal East, Imphal West, Thoubal, Kakching, and Bishnupur districts. The seizure included five AK series rifles, three INSAS rifles, 16 self-loading rifles (SLRs), five .303 rifles, 19 pistols, two carbines, nine other rifles, 16 SBBL and bore action guns, two antiriot guns, one JVPC, one double-barrel gun, six bolt-action guns, and a two-inch mortar. In addition to the firearms, the teams also recovered nine grenades, six high-explosive mortar shells, four improvised explosive devices (IEDs), and 41 assorted magazines. Ammunition seized included 526 live rounds of 7.62 mm, 226 rounds of 5.56 mm, 190 rounds of .303 mm, seven rounds of 9 mm, and four rounds of .32 mm. The forces also confiscated six wireless handsets and two tube launchers. Miscreants looted over 6,000 weapons from state forces' armouries since ethnic violence erupted in the state in May 2023. The Manipur Police, in a press statement, described the operation as a major success in the ongoing effort to neutralise illegal arms networks and restore peace and security in the state. The operation underscores the close coordination among security agencies and the proactive approach being taken to prevent further violence. Police authorities reaffirmed their commitment to continuing such focused and intelligence-driven operations, it said. This is the third significant weapon recovery in recent times. On July 4, the forces seized 203 weapons and explosives during joint search operations in the hill districts of Manipur. Before that, in another operation, 328 weapons and 8,665 assorted ammunition were recovered.

Nimisha Priya, hailing from Palakkad district, was sentenced to death in 2020, and her final appeal was rejected in 2023. She is currently imprisoned in a jail in Yemeni capital Sanaa. Gun under greens: Police seize illegal arms from shop disguised as ‘Sabji Waale' in Purnia
Patna: In a bizarre turn of events, a vegetable shop in Purnia district was found to be a front for a sophisticated arms smuggling racket. Acting on a tip-off, the Bihar Special Task Force (STF) and the district police carried out a joint raid on Monday, uncovering a large cache of illegal weapons and live cartridges from a shop named 'Sabji Waale' — a seemingly ordinary vegetable vendor. The operation led to the arrest of an alleged arms smuggler, Kunal Kumar Singh, a resident of Purnia College Road under Haat police station area. From his shop, the police recovered the breech block (rotating bolt) of an AK-47 rifle, a German-made Beretta pistol, and 440 rounds of live cartridges. According to officials, Kunal had a criminal history involving multiple arms smuggling charges and had previously served four jail terms under the Arms Act. Notably, he was released just two months ago from Beur central jail in Patna. Police records show that at least five cases are registered against him across Patna, Munger, and Purnia. Purnia SP, Sweety Sehrawat, said police received an input that Kunal, already wanted in multiple cases, was continuing his illegal trade by concealing it behind a vegetable shop front.
