SC writes to centre to vacate official CJI bungalow still occupied by ex-Chief Justice Chandrachud
The Supreme Court has taken the unusual step of asking the Union government to urgently vacate the official Chief Justice's residence, which is still occupied by former Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud, reported the Hindustan Times.
In a letter dated July 1, the Supreme Court wrote to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), requesting that Bungalow No. 5 on Krishna Menon Marg in Lutyens' Delhi — the designated house for India's sitting CJI — be handed back immediately.

'I am to request you to take possession of Bungalow No. 5, Krishna Menon Marg, from Hon'ble Dr. Justice DY Chandrachud without any further delay as not only the permission that was granted for retention… has expired on 31st May, 2025, but also the period of six months provided in Rule 3B of the 2022 Rules has expired on 10th May, 2025,' the letter from a Supreme Court official to the MoHUA secretary stated.
Justice Chandrachud, who served as the 50th CJI from November 2022 to November 2024, continues to live in the Type VIII bungalow nearly eight months after retiring. His two successors — Justices Sanjiv Khanna and the current CJI Bhushan R Gavai — have chosen not to move into the Krishna Menon Marg house and have stayed in their previous official residences instead.
According to the letter, Justice Chandrachud had written on December 18, 2024, to then CJI Sanjiv Khanna, seeking permission to stay at 5 Krishna Menon Marg until April 30, 2025. He explained that although he had been allotted Bungalow No. 14 on Tughlak Road under Rule 3B of the Supreme Court Judges (Amendment) Rules, 2022, renovations at the new house were delayed because of pollution-related construction bans under GRAP-IV.

MMK demands Muslim representation, repeal of Waqf Act at Madurai conference
1 2 Madurai: Manithaneya Makkal Katchi (MMK) president M H Jawahirullah on Sunday called for proportional political representation for Muslims and demanded the repeal of the Waqf (Amendment) Act, alleging it was unconstitutional and aimed at dismantling minority institutions. Addressing a state-level public conference organised by the MMK in Madurai, he said the party's struggle was not for power but to uphold secularism, protect minority rights, and promote inclusive governance. Thousands of supporters took part in a four-kilometre rally from P C Perungayam junction to Amma Thidal near Vandiyur Toll Plaza, carrying party flags and placards while raising slogans in support of Muslim representation and Waqf protection. City police deployed additional forces and enforced traffic diversions to ensure order. In his speech, Jawahirullah said that despite making up over 14% of the population, Muslims remain severely under-represented in Indian politics. "We need at least 80 Muslim MPs in the Lok Sabha to match our population. In the Chennai Corporation, only four out of 200 councillors are Muslim. Every party, from the panchayat level to Parliament, must address this imbalance," he said. He urged both ruling and opposition parties, including DMK, Congress, and AIADMK, to ensure fair representation for Muslims. "That is the purpose of this conference," he said. Slamming the recent amendments to the Waqf Act, he claimed they were designed to weaken the Waqf boards and seize their properties. "The BJP government is using the new portal as a tool to loot Waqf assets. We are prepared to launch protests similar to the farmers' agitation if the Act is not repealed," he warned. The conference passed 10 resolutions. Key among them were demands for proportional political representation for Muslims, the repeal of the amended Waqf Act, and the establishment of a fully functional Waqf Development Corporation. The MMK also called for a ban on EVMs and VVPATs, citing a lack of trust in the system. Other resolutions condemned Israel for "genocide" in Palestine and criticised US support. The party demanded that India sever ties with Israel, ban the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, and take a strong stand at the UN. The MMK also condemned Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar's recent remarks on removing 'secularism' and 'socialism' from the Constitution. It praised the Tamil Nadu government for standing up to "fascist forces" and called for Muslim identity and history to be included in school curricula. It also sought better facilities at the Sikkandar Dargah on Thiruparankundram hill in Madurai and improved conditions for undertrial Muslim prisoners. "This is not about electoral seats or political gain," Jawahirullah concluded. "This is about dignity, rights, and a rightful place for Muslims in this country." MMK MLA Abdul Samad, speaking earlier, vowed that the party would resist any attempt to implement the Waqf Act in its current form.

This is part of the real 'amchi Mumbai'," he said in Marathi to a gathering of his former batchmates, teachers, and current school students, some of whom, as part of NCC, practised hard to form a band within six months to welcome him. "Of all welcomes I received so far across India and even abroad as CJI, the little children's performance today as a band was the warmest," Justice Gavai gushed. "I was interested in debates. My journey in public speaking began on this stage. Also, PT class by Joshi sir induced the necessary discipline in us as students. On Sunday, local MLA and minister, MP Lodha, who was also present, promised to help with paperwork to install one.

Will urge SC for uniform rules on overage vehicles: CM
New Delhi: Chief minister Rekha Gupta on Sunday said Delhi govt will urge the Supreme Court to allow uniform rules on overage vehicles in the national capital, in line with those followed across the country. "We will tell the Supreme Court about the pollution control measures taken by the govt. The parameters that are applicable in the entire country should also apply to Delhi. We want Delhiites not to face any inconvenience," she said, adding that they are committed to providing relief to people. A 2018 Supreme Court judgment banned diesel vehicles older than 10 years and petrol vehicles older than 15 years in Delhi. In 2014, a National Green Tribunal order also prohibited the parking of vehicles aged over 15 years in public places. Delhi environment minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa, in his letter to the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) chairman Rajesh Verma, said the fuel ban is not feasible and cannot be implemented due to "technological challenges". Till March this year, there were more than 60 lakh overage vehicles in Delhi. The previous year, 39,273 were scrapped while in 2023, the figure stood at 22,397. In his letter, Sirsa said that a stage-wise implementation that begins only in Delhi will not serve its intended purpose. "It is highly likely to lead to vehicle owners procuring fuel from adjacent districts like Gurgaon, Faridabad and Ghaziabad, thereby circumventing the ban and potentially fostering an illegal cross-border market for fuel, which would further exacerbate the problem," he said.
