Hungarian FM discussed ‘urgency' of ending Ukraine war in meeting with US secretary of state
According to a statement from the US State Department, "The Secretary underlined the urgency of ending the war in Ukraine and ensuring lasting peace and stability in the region."
The meeting came amid uncertainty on US-Ukraine relations after things took a turn for the worse following last week's standoff meeting between Donald Trump and Ukraine's president, Voldomyr Zelenskyy, at the Oval Office.
On Monday, the White House announced a pause in all military aid to Kyiv as Trump puts pressure on Zelenskyy to sign a rare earth mineral deal with the US and for 'peace talks' with Russia.
Hungary, unlike the majority of European countries, has been a staunch critic of EU efforts to defend Ukraine against Russia's invasion. Its prime minister, Viktor Orban, has frequently criticised, and threatened to veto EU sanctions against Russia over its aggression but has ultimately always voted for them.
Szijarjarto's meeting with Rubio on Tuesday also comes as the Hungarian government threatened to oppose an EU bloc-wide accord or joint statement on Ukraine ahead of Thursday's extraordinary summit dedicated to Ukraine and EU defence.
On Sunday, European leaders—the UK and France—at a summit in London floated the idea of a "coalition of the willing" among member states that could send troops on the ground to Ukraine as a guarantee after a potential peace deal.
Leaders of the UK, Canada, France, and EU countries at the summit also agreed to keep military aid flowing into Ukraine and to ensure any peace talks and agreements guarantee Ukraine's sovereignty.
In reaction to the summit, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán slammed the EU leaders, saying they wanted "to continue with the war instead of opting for peace."
Since Russia began its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, EU member states have significantly increased their defence budgets.
In her proposal for a Rearm Europe Plan on Tuesday, EU Commission president Ursula von der Leyen said that member states might raise as much as €800 billion to fund a significant defence increase.

China slaps 'anti-dumping' taxes of up to 34.9 percent on EU brandy
China said it will impose "anti-dumping" taxes of up to 34.9 percent on brandy imported from the European Union starting from Saturday, adding to tensions between the major trading partners. Beijing launched an investigation last year into EU brandy, months after the bloc undertook a probe into Chinese electric vehicle (EV) subsidies. It later said it had determined in a preliminary ruling that dumping had occurred and imposed "temporary anti-dumping measures" on imports of the alcoholic beverage. And Beijing's commerce ministry said on Friday that China's tariff commission had "decided to impose anti-dumping duties on imports of relevant brandy originating in the EU from July 5, 2025". "The investigating authority finally ruled that there was dumping of relevant brandy imported from the EU," the ministry said in a statement. "The domestic relevant brandy industry was threatened with substantial damages, and there was a causal relationship between the dumping and that threat," it said. The levies will apply to brandy in containers of less than 200 litres, according to the ministry. It said the tax rate on French liquor giant Jas Hennessy would be 34.9 percent. Remy Martin will be hit with 34.3 percent and Martell 27.7 percent. The levies come as Chinese top diplomat Wang Yi has held fraught meetings with his counterparts during a tour of Europe this week. And they will likely be high on the agenda when he meets French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot on Friday afternoon in Paris. Bitter taste A trade spat between Beijing and the bloc erupted last summer when the EU moved towards imposing hefty tariffs on EVs imported from China, arguing that Beijing's subsidies were unfairly undercutting European competitors. Beijing denied that claim and announced what were widely seen as retaliatory probes into imported European pork, brandy and dairy products. The EU imposed extra import taxes of up to 35 percent on Chinese EV imports last October. Beijing later lodged a complaint with the World Trade Organization, which said in April that it would set up an expert panel to assess the EU's decision. China is a major market for French cognac, with exports worth 1.4 billion euros ($1.6 billion) per year. The anti-dumping measures are costing the industry 50 million euros per month. China and the EU are scheduled to hold a summit this month to mark the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties. But the festivities come at a time of strained relations, with the trade tensions compounded by Beijing's position on the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which Brussels says shows tacit support for Moscow.

Putin hits Ukraine with largest barrage of war after Trump call
AFP journalists in the capital heard drones buzzing over Kyiv and explosions ringing out as Ukrainian air defence systems fended off the attack. President Donald Trump said he had made no progress with Vladimir Putin on ending the war in a call, as the Kremlin insisted Russia would pursue its war aims. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the air alerts had begun echoing out across the country as reports of the presidents' call emerged. "Yet again, Russia is showing it has no intention of ending the war and terror," Zelensky said on social media. "All of this is clear evidence that without truly large-scale pressure, Russia will not change its dumb, destructive behaviour," he added, urging the United States in particular to ramp up pressure on Moscow. He said that 23 people were wounded in the Russian barrage that the air force said included 539 Russian drones of various types and 11 missiles. A representative of Ukraine's air force told Ukrainian media that the attack was the largest of the Russian invasion. 'Complete disregard' Overnight Russia attacks have escalated over recent weeks. An AFP tally shows Moscow launched a record number of drones and missiles at Ukraine in June, as direct peace talks between Kyiv and Moscow appeared to stall. "Putin clearly shows his complete disregard for the United States and everyone who has called for an end to the war," Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga wrote on social media after the attack. In Kyiv, AFP journalists saw dozens of residents of the capital taking shelter in a metro station. Russian attacks escalated as concerns mount in Kyiv over continued delivery of US military aid, which is key to Ukraine's ability to fend off the drone and missile barrages. The US announced this week that it was reducing some deliveries of military aid to Ukraine, in what EU chief Ursula von der Leyen said was a clear signal that the bloc needed to "step up". Trump's view of the call with Putin was unusually bleak. After most of his previous five calls with Putin since returning to power in January he has given optimistic reports of progress towards a deal. But he has shown increasing frustration with Putin after an early pivot towards the Russian leader. Ukraine has also ramped up its drone strikes in Russia, where a woman was killed when a Ukrainian drone crashed into an apartment building, the region's acting governor said. © 2025 AFP
