Clint Eastwood calls viral interview a fabrication: ‘Completely phony'

Irish Times03-06-2025

Clint Eastwood
has released a statement to claim a recent interview with him is a fabrication.
Quotes from an alleged interview with the
Oscar
-winning actor and director had gone viral over the weekend and were picked up by a number of sites. Yet Eastwood says he never spoke to anyone from German-language Austrian newspaper Kurier.
'A couple of items about me have recently shown up in the news,' Eastwood said in a statement released to Deadline. 'I thought I would set the record straight. I can confirm I've turned 95. I can also confirm that I never gave an interview to an Austrian publication called Kurier, or any other writer in recent weeks, and that the interview is entirely phoney.'
Eastwood, who turned 95 over the weekend, had been originally quoted as being in pre-production on his new movie and had rallied against 'an era of remakes and franchises'.

Kurier is based in Vienna and has a circulation of approximately 100,000 copies.
There is no official statement from Kurier or any details on how the interview was assembled.

Show Clint Eastwood some respect. His new film Juror #2 is no dud

Eastwood's most recent film Juror #2, which starred Nicholas Hoult, was released at the end of last year with no confirmed word on what his next film will be. In an interview to support the film with the Metrograph magazine, he addressed his legacy as a film-maker.
'That would be up to them, to the audiences, to answer,' he said. 'Up to the people on the outside. I just kind of go along. I consider this, again, emotional. It comes upon you. You have a story, you make a movie of it. You have to just go for it. If you think too much about how it happened you might ruin it. I go back and look at films I've made, and I could easily ask, 'Why the heck did I make this?' I don't remember! It might have been a long time ago.'
Eastwood recently paid tribute to costar Gene Hackman after Hackman's death in February. 'There was no finer actor than Gene,' he said. 'Intense and instinctive. Never a false note.' 'He was also a dear friend whom I will miss very much.'

He told 'It's a lot easier to go big, make a fool of yourself, get embarrassed, and then bring it down to reality than it is to start with low energy and go, hey, we need more.' Matthew also told the publication how having kids has helped him in his own career, saying becoming a dad made him a better actor. Most read in Celebrity He said: 'Having children I know has made me a better artist and has made me a better actor, because kids see things for the first time all the time. Their questions are innocent. 'I become a better storyteller because I have kids, meaning, I come home from work on something like True Detective, and my 4-year-old kid goes, 'What'd you do today?' Bishop leads tributes after death of Fr Oscar O'Leary OFM

The Bishop of Cork and Ross has led tributes following the death of a popular priest who ministered to Cork's Traveller community for more than three decades. Bishop Fintan Gavin described Fr Oscar O'Leary OFM, who died on Sunday at the Franciscan Friary in Cork city, as a man of great compassion. Poignantly, Fr Oscar died just a week after the diocese marked the 60th anniversary of his ordination. 'I am grateful to have come to know Fr Oscar over these last six years,' Bishop Gavin said. I have always been struck by his compassion and care of people. 'He imbued the compassion and mercy of Christ to all, especially the most vulnerable. 'The Traveller community found a real companion and friend in him as he journeyed with them in good times and challenging times bringing them the comfort and support of Christ. May he rest in peace.' The group included Bishop Emeritus John Buckley (front, right). Fr Oscar was among a group of priests who attended a lunch last week, hosted by Bishop Gavin, to mark various jubilees of ordination to the priesthood by priests who minister in the Diocese of Cork and Ross. He was honoured for his silver jubilee, alongside Emeritus Bishop of Cork and Ross, Bishop John Buckley, who was ordained a priest in 1965. Among Fr Oscar's long years of ministry were many years spent devoted to the pastoral care and support of the Traveller community in Cork. He celebrated many Traveller weddings, christenings, and funerals, and he worked behind the scenes to try to resolve disputes and feuds which flared up from time to time. He was also the principal celebrant of the funeral Mass for murdered two-year-old Santina Cawley in July 2019. 'It is not the length of the life lived by someone, but what that person brings in to our lives when they are here,' he told mourners.

F1 in pole position as rave reviews have it set to become hit of the summer

F1: The Movie starring Oscar nominee Kerry Condon and Brad Pitt is on track to become the biggest blockbuster of the summer in Ireland. The film has been attracting rave reviews since it opened in cinemas here this week. And although official audience figures will not be released until tomorrow, industry sources reported yesterday that the movie is expected to be one of the biggest-grossing films of the year, both domestically and globally. Brad Pitt in F1. Pic: Warner Bros/Everett/Shutterstock One source told 'It's a bit early to say, but based on Friday's numbers, which have been good, it's up there with our best performing movies over the past few months. 'It's up there with 28 Years Later, which performed very well and the horror film Final Destination. It's tracking to match up with our best movies and it's on par with superhero and horror movies. 'I don't think anyone will disagree that it will be the biggest hit of the summer.' F1. Pic: Warner Bros/Apple Conor Kelly of Dublin's Savoy Cinema also said the movie is gearing up to be the big hit of the summer. He told 'People are just saying it's great and when they come out [of the cinema] they are saying they want to see it again. 'It's going very well and everyone has been raving about it. It's like the [Top Gun] Maverick movie, and even people who don't like Formula 1 – the sport – are saying they think it's well done.' Tom Cruise. Pic: Paramount Pictures He added: 'It's bringing in people. I think it's going to be like Twisters last year; that was helped by word of mouth. It could be the hit of the summer.' F1: The Movie opened in 710 cinemas in Ireland and the UK last Wednesday. The American movie trade magazine Variety has forecast it will make €42m during its first weeks in the cinemas. Directed by Joseph Kosinski and produced by Top Gun: Maverick's Jerry Bruckheimer, F1 cost €170m to make. Kerry Condon. Pic: Amy Muir/REX/Shutterstock Although the film is a work of fiction, Condon's character Kate – the only female technical director in Formula One – is largely based on the real-life Fermanagh woman and former Aston Martin strategist Bernie Collins. Condon – whose character keeps her distinctive Thurles accent in the film – has admitted she knew nothing about motorsport before she landed the leading lady role. Speaking about her pre-shoot preparation for the racing platform F1 Nation this week, Condon said: 'The first race I went to was in Barcelona, just to meet people and observe everybody. Everyone was so nice and generous, particularly Bernie Collins.' 'I learned a lot from Bernie because of her Irish background. I thought that was going to be perfect. I thought, 'yes, bingo, I'm going to base it kind of on Bernie's backstory.' [F1 TV's] Ruth Buscombe as well was very helpful. 'I just kind of found out a little bit about where they went to college and what they studied and the route that they took to get there,' Condon added. 'And then little things like the notepad that I have [in the movie] when I walk to the pit wall. I asked Bernie what she would have written on the front page of her notepad, just in case the camera caught a glimpse of my notepad or something. 'It was kind of radical because we shot a lot of the movie live with the real Grand Prix, so a lot of the cars flying by in the background were the real cars happening in real time. That's never been done before.'
