Time of India23-06-2025
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: The Dharashiv district police on Sunday arrested Tuljapur municipal council's former president Santosh Kadam, the office-bearer of a political party, in connection with the Tuljapur drug trafficking case, which came to light on Feb 14 after the arrest of three people from Tamalwadi village with 45 grams of MD.
Police seized synthetic drugs worth Rs 2.5 lakh on Feb 15, uncovering a network spanning Solapur, Naldurg, Pune and Mumbai. A priest from Tuljabhavani temple was among the main peddlers. The case now involves 38 accused, with 22 arrested and 16 still absconding, including some prominent individuals who have been on the run for two months.
Dharashiv superintendent of police Ritu Khokar told TOI, "Kadam was named as an accused in this case and included in the chargesheet filed earlier in connection with the case.
He, however, remained at large till the arrest was made last night (Sunday night) from Akluj in Solapur district."
Tamalwadi police have arrested political party worker Jeevan Salunke from Solapur in the case. Sub-divisional police officer Nilesh Deshmukh, who is leading the investigation in this case, told TOI, "Kadam was produced before the court on Monday, following which he was remanded to 10-day police custody."

The Tuljapur drug network exploits the town's high footfall of Tuljabhavani temple devotees. Easy money lures youth into addiction, with traffickers targeting visitors and selling drugs at Rs 2,000-3,000 per gram in areas like Bomblya Chowk, Hudco and Vetal Nagar. Street-level sellers remain unidentified.
Imposing a self-regulation, Dharashiv district collector Keerthi Kiran Pujara, within a week of police filing a chargesheet in April, asked the pujari association of the historical Tuljapur Bhavani temple not to include names of Pujaris accused in the drug case in the roster for performing pooja or aarti at the temple.
According to the chargesheet, the accused were linked through a complex web of bank transactions and call detail records (CDRs). It contains statements of the accused and details their roles in the racket. The document also reveals how the accused, including prime suspect Sangeeta Gole, came into contact with each other and formed an organised distribution chain. Gole, arrested from Mumbai, is alleged to be the kingpin of the operation.
Her bank accounts reportedly show transactions amounting to Rs 5 crore. Police have also seized a significant quantity of gold from her.

Punjab Cop Caught Smoking Heroin On Camera, Transferred

Chandigarh: A video of a member of the Punjab police taking drugs surfaced today and is being widely circulated online, bringing home how deep the state's drug menace has spread its tentacles. The policeman has been identified and action has been taken against him. The video shows the policeman sitting on a cot and inhaling heroin. A second person present appears to be filming him. Sources said Pravin Kumar is the gunman of a senior political leader based in Hoshiarpur. The Special Superintendent of Police, Hoshiarpur, told NDTV, "We have immediately transferred him from security duty to police lines. We have also initiated departmental action against him". "We have started further investigation into this matter. Preliminary investigation revealed that he got admitted in a de-addiction centre by his family. The police are working on various angles to get this video investigated," he added. The battle against drugs have been on for nearly two decades in Punjab during which all the key political parties in the state had a turn at the governance but the menace has continued unabated. The parties have been pointing fingers at each other for failing to control the proliferation of drugs. Under the current "Yudh Nashian Virudh" anti-drugs campaign, since March 1, 13,665 FIRs have been registered, 18,424 arrests made, and 900 kg heroin, 332 kg opium, 13 kg charas, 6 kg Crystal Methamphetamine (Ice) and Rs 11.5 crore drug money seized. Over the last years, the police have focused on end users - the victims of addiction -- and have been sending them to de-addiction centres instead of jail. Reports say more than 10,000 users have been persuaded to enter residential rehabilitation programmes or register with OOAT (Outpatient Opioid Assisted Treatment) clinics.

ED Raids 6 Sites In Hyderabad Over Rs 621 Crore Scam Linked To Highway Project

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Tuesday conducted searches across six locations in Hyderabad in connection with a Rs 621-crore bank-fraud case against the promoters and directors of a company and its associate firms. The investigation was based on an FIR registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) against SEW LSY Highways Limited and others for allegedly siphoning off loan funds, cheating, and criminal misconduct, resulting in the loss of public money, the probe agency said in a statement. The raids targeted SEW Infrastructure Limited (SIL), Prasad & Company (Project Works) Private Limited (PSPWPL), their group firms, and directors, the ED said. SEW LSY Highways Limited was incorporated as a special purpose vehicle (SPV) for the execution of a highway project assigned by the Uttar Pradesh State Highway Authority to a consortium of SIL and PSPWPL. The project was backed by a Rs 1,700-crore term loan from a consortium of 14 banks led by Punjab National Bank, of which Rs 603.68 crore was disbursed. The ED's probe revealed a complex scheme of intra-group sub-contracting where work was passed on at successively lower values, primarily through SEW Transport Networks Ltd (STNL) and then to PSPWPL. It alleged that part of the loan funds was diverted to PSPWPL, which then infused these funds back as the promoters' contribution, violating loan conditions. "However, the project was not completed and the term loan became a non-performing asset, resulting in an outstanding amount of Rs 621.78 crore to the banks," the ED said. Additionally, 33 bank accounts belonging to SEW Infrastructure Limited, as well as their directors and relatives were frozen during the search operations. SEW Infrastructure Ltd. was founded in 1983 by Vallurupalli Nageswara Rao and is based in Hyderabad.

Belgian woman in Madurai to trace roots, suspects adoption racket

1 2 Madurai: Aruna Leruitte, a 33-year-old Belgian national, arrived in Madurai on Wednesday to trace her biological family, nearly three decades after she was adopted from a now-blacklisted agency suspected of child trafficking. Aruna was adopted in 1994 through Malaysian Social Service (MSS), an agency later exposed for fabricating documents and kidnapping children for international adoption. Her adoption papers mention Palayam, a village in Madurai district, as her place of origin. She is now preparing to file a petition in the Madras high court, seeking access to her birth records. "This December, I will complete five years of searching for my mother," said Aruna, who works as a secretary in Belgium. Aruna was raised with love by her adoptive mother, who died of cancer when Aruna was 16. She now lives with her adoptive father and brother, also adopted, from Bengaluru. She said she had constantly faced bullying in Belgium for her dark skin. Her legal counsel, Anjali Pawar of the Adoptee Rights Council, said there are significant inconsistencies in Aruna's records. According to available documents, she was admitted to the MSS Child Care Centre in 1993 as a child born out of wedlock. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Indonesia: New Container Houses (Prices May Surprise You) Container House | Search Ads Search Now Undo "But the timeline suggests she may have been taken from her family without consent when she was around 1.5 years old," Pawar said. MSS came under scrutiny in 2005 for sending kidnapped children abroad under the guise of legal adoption. "It's still happening in different forms," Pawar said, adding that oversight by the Central Adoption Resource Authority (CARA) needs to be decentralised. "After Kolkata, Tamil Nadu has become a major hub for such rackets. These truths surface only when someone goes looking," she added. MSID:: 122885111 413 |
