Another law student alleges molestation by Kolkata gangrape accused Monojit Mishra

India Today17 hours ago
Days after a woman's gangrape at the South Calcutta Law College created ripples across West Bengal, another student of the institution has accused Monojit Mishra, the prime accused in the case, of allegedly molesting her and threatening her with consequences two years back.Speaking exclusively to India Today TV, the student alleged that Mishra, a Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad leader, assaulted and threatened her during a college trip. She further claimed that around 15 female students fell victim to his "perversion".advertisementUpon being asked why she did not raise the alarm and file a complaint against Mishra at the time of the incident, the woman said that she was scared to approach the police as Mishra had allegedly threatened to kill her parents and sister.
She further claimed that what also deterred her from filing a complaint was Mishra's big political connections and influence, and said that he was sheltered by Trinamool Congress MLA and college board president, Ashok Kumar Deb.The student also said that despite several police complaints filed against Mishra in the past, the police have also refrained from taking him to task owing to his political connections.Meanwhile, after Mishra's arrest, some of his batchmates and contemporaries described him as a 'perpetual troublemaker' who harassed girls inside the Trinamool-run union office on the college campus on flimsy grounds, a PTI report said.HABITUAL OFFENDERadvertisementEarlier, sources told India Today that Monojit Mishra has a known history of violence, intimidation, and abusive conduct and was even arrested on assault charges just two months ago for allegedly assaulting a police officer and vandalising a police vehicle.Sources said that, on April 13, Mishra went to an HDFC Bank ATM kiosk near the law college in Kasba area to withdraw cash. An argument reportedly broke out when he allegedly tried to enter the ATM kiosk while holding a lit cigarette. When the security guard on duty objected, the former Trinamool cadre reportedly verbally abused and physically assaulted him.The guard then called the police control room for help. A police patrol van arrived at the scene shortly after. However, when officers attempted to detain Mishra, he allegedly got into a scuffle with them, broke the windshield of the police van and allegedly assaulted an assistant sub-inspector who was part of the patrolling team, sources revealed.LAW STUDENT'S GANGRAPE CASEOn June 28, Monojit Mishra, along with two others, was arrested for allegedly raping a woman student of the South Calcutta Law College, a day after the survivor filed a police complaint against them. The complainant alleged that Mishra, who had previously proposed to her for marriage, which she rejected, raped her while the other two students watched.advertisementA security guard of the college was also arrested in connection with the matter as he allegedly turned a blind eye to the crime as it unfolded and did not alert college authorities or police on purpose. After the incident came to light, a major political showdown erupted in the state as the opposition BJP accused the ruling Trinamool Congress of shielding the accused as he belonged to their party. The party has demanded strict action against the culprits and has also sought Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's resignation over the prevailing law and order situation in the state. The Trinamool, however, has hit back at the BJP and accused it of politicising the matter.- EndsMust Watch

Campus rapists used inhaler to revive woman, prolong assault

KOLKATA: Ex-Trinamool Chhatra Parishad office-bearer Monojit Mishra and his two alleged accomplices in the campus gang-rape of a 24-year-old law student used an inhaler to revive the woman when she appeared to lose consciousness so that they could continue the assault, police said during a court hearing Tuesday to illustrate what the prosecution termed their "intent and desperation". "When the girl became breathless (the survivor mentions in her complaint that she had a panic attack), she was provided the inhaler - not to revive her but to ensure she regained consciousness and they could assault her sexually," public prosecutor Sourin Ghosal told the Alipore court while seeking police custody of the arrested suspects till July 10. The court remanded prime suspect Mishra and law students Zaib Ahmed and Pramit Mukherjee in police custody until July 8. Security guard Pinaki Banerjee, arrested on suspicion of abetting the June 25 crime inside the guardroom, will remain in custody until July 4. Ghosal argued for extended custody on the ground that the suspects, especially Mishra, were "very influential and may influence the investigation". If granted bail, they might "terrorise" the survivor and tamper with evidence, he said. Police also informed the court that not only did the medical report of the survivor corroborate her statement, technical evidence collected by the special investigation team and circumstantial proof matched her version of how the crime unfolded. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Free P2,000 GCash eGift UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo New evidence presented include CCTV footage from the pharmacy where the inhaler was purchased and the mobile location data of the suspects. Police have questioned six of 17 students present on campus that evening. Investigators are examining why Mishra called the college vice-principal the day after the assault. They also plan to question the college union's general secretary, who left the survivor alone hours before the attack after promising to return. According to the FIR, the general secretary was with the survivor from 4pm to 7.30pm after Zaib summoned them, claiming Mishra wanted to discuss something regarding the union. The general secretary then left, saying she would return shortly, but never did. Police quoted Zaib and Pramit as telling interrogators that Mishra planned the assault after repeated rejections by the survivor, whom he purportedly wanted to marry. The college's governing body has expelled Mishra, who worked as a temporary member of the non-teaching staff while practising law. The other two suspects have been barred from all Bengal educational institutions. The college will petition the authorities to revoke Mishra's law licence. The college's vice-principal said Tuesday that the perpetrators of the crime should be "hanged".

Stayed at home for six wks after picnic trauma

1 2 3 4 In 2023, the year I had joined college, we had gone on a picnic to Budge Budge. The seniors had organised the outing for juniors. I was new to the city and I was all excited about the picnic. While travelling by train to Budge Budge, I was introduced to Monojit Mishra. On reaching the spot, a bagaan baari, we found that two AC rooms on the first floor of the house had been kept for us, one for the girls and the other, for boys. From the time we reached, Monojit started drinking and some of the boys joined him around noon. They were all sitting downstairs in a big hall. I remember, it was around 5.45 pm that my father had called. I went to the boys' room to talk to him as the room was empty at that time. That room had an attached verandah, and I went out there to talk. Suddenly, I turned around to see Monojit striding up to me. He grabbed my hair, dragged me inside and pounced on me. I kept begging him to let me go but he snatched away my phone. He pinned me down and held my hands so tightly that I was not in a position to move. He took that chance and tore my innerwear's strap. I froze and started crying. He called me 'hot' and bit me so hard that blood started dripping from my earlobes. The bite marks on my neck remained for at least a couple of months. The brutality continued for 40 minutes until someone knocked on the door, and he was forced to open it. As he left, I ran downstairs, washed off the blood and went and sat on a bench. My ear was still bleeding, but I covered it with my hair. Just then, he again came up to me and groped me from behind, but I managed to escape. The torment continued till 6.30 pm. My batchmates and seniors sensed my discomfort, and after I confided in them, they asked me to lodge a complaint. I decided to lodge a complaint with the college authorities and police the very next day. But Monojit's gang called me to the union room and told me, "Dada has a lot of power. It will take just one minute to finish off your family. You live so far from home—if someone throws acid on you, you might not even survive. " They seemed to have gathered information on my family and I was too scared to go to police. Monojit's gang would call me up on WhatsApp after midnight to threaten and abuse me. Eventually, the frequency of the calls subsided, but the memory of it all kept haunting me. The trauma was such that I could not attend classes for one-and-a-half months. I left Kolkata and went back to my home, where I remained holed up. The fear of them harming my family and attacking me with acid kept me from speaking out against Monojit. Rape accused should be hanged, says law college vice-principal after GB meeting

1 2 Kolkata: The vice-principal of the law college where a first-year student was gang raped said the perpetrators should be hanged even as the governing body expelled Monojit Mishra and decided to appeal to the bar council for the cancellation of his licence to practice in court. "The rapists should be hanged for committing such a heinous crime on the college premises," Nayna Chatterjee, the vice-principal of the law college said after the governing body meeting on Tuesday. The meeting had been convened following a nudge from the higher education department to discuss issues that have come to the fore in the wake of the incident. The governing body expelled the key accused, Mishra, who was working as a casual staff member at the college since last year. He will also be asked to return the money that he had been paid by the college. Pramit Mukherjee and Zaib Ahmed — the other two accused — were barred from the campus and won't be able to get admission to any institute in Bengal. The governing body will also appeal to the bar council for the cancellation of Mishra's licence.
