This Hindi movie to have world premiere at New York Indian Film Festival; director reveals why he chose dark comedy

Mint04-06-2025
The feature film Kaisi Ye Paheli, written and directed by debutant Ananyabrata Chakravorty (ABC), is slated to have its world premiere at the New York Indian Film Festival (NYIFF), scheduled to run from June 20 to 22, 2025. He revealed they chose dark comedy and murder mystery because to 'connect with wider audience' as they make it 'palatable and accessible' and didn't want to take a 'serious tone while addressing a serious matter'.
'We are addressing a serious matter, and therefore didn't want to take a serious tone. It's only when we make something palatable and accessible that we are able to connect with a wider audience. Hence the exciting genres - so the audiences enjoy the story, before they take home the theme and begin a conversation around it,' Chakravorty shares in an exclusive conversation with Livemint.com
The film has been selected for the Competition Section and nominated for Best Screenplay and Best Debut Film. Its premiere will take place at Village East by Angelika on June 21.
When asked how the premiere selection feels, the director mentions, 'Maybe the word is validation, but it's more special because we didn't tailor the film for festivals. We could've made it to a good festival by following the usual themes and narratives that festivals expect from Indian filmmakers. But we didn't take that road. Instead, we went ahead with the story that we wanted to tell - our way. Getting recognised by such a reputed festival despite that is what makes it all the more special for us.'
Produced by Nishu Dikshit and Take Pictures, Kaisi Ye Paheli explores a lonely mother's attempts to connect with her disrespectful policeman son by helping him solve a murder. It is set against the backdrop of a small hill town in Northeast India and was shot in Sikkim. Chakravorty says, 'We have tried to address loneliness and the conflict between old mothers and their grown-up sons - which we feel doesn't get talked about much in our society and pop culture.'
The film features Nadiya Ke Paar fame actress Sadhana Singh, Kaala Paani actor Sukant Goel, and Rajit Kapur, who returns to the screen as a Bengali detective. Chittaranjan Giri takes on the role of a character from the Northeast.
"Sadhana is a natural performer. She has such a beautiful motherly charm, and I knew the moment I met her that she is the perfect actor to play the mother in our film - because of the uncanny mix of dignity and simplicity with which she carries herself. I had to put in very little effort towards directing her - just a narration and a couple of sessions on the intentions of each scene, and that was it - she got the character," Chakravorty adds.

Kartik Aaryan's team says actor was ‘not associated' with event organised by Pakistani restaurant after FWICE's warning

Actor Kartik Aaryan received a notice from The Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) over claims that he was going to be present at an upcoming Independence Day event in Houston, USA. The event was organised by a Pakistani-owned restaurant. The actor's team has now issued a statement clarifying that he was not associated with this event. Kartik Aaryan was last seen in Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3. Official statement from Kartik's team The official statement from Kartik Aaryan's team read: 'Kartik Aaryan is not associated with this event in any capacity. He has never made an official announcement about participating in this event. We have contacted the organizers and requested to remove all promotional materials featuring his name and image." Objection from FWICE The issue began when, in an official letter to Kartik, the FWICE urged the actor to withdraw from the upcoming event. As per Times Now, the letter read, 'It is with a sense of deep concern and responsibility that the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) brings to your notice a matter involving your scheduled participation in an event titled Azadi Utsav-The Indian Independence Day to be held in Houston, USA, on 15th August 2025. As per the attached poster, you are being featured as the lead guest for this celebration. While such events are a source of pride and cultural expression for Indians abroad, we regret to inform you that this specific program is being organized by a Pakistani-owned restaurant, Aga's Restaurant and Catering, owned by Mr. Shaukat Maredia.' The letter continued, 'The same restaurant and its associates are also organizing a concert featuring Pakistani singer Atil Aslam and are promoting Jashn-e-Azadi, a celebration of Pakistan's Independence Day. The simultaneous promotion of Indian and Pakistani national events by the same establishment not only creates a conflict of interest but also violates the ongoing national sentiment and directives.' 'We believe you may not have been fully aware of the organisers' background or affiliations. If so, we strongly urge you to immediately withdraw your participation from this event. However, if you were aware, it becomes a matter of even greater concern and we expect a clarification and immediate distancing from such associations. We are confident that you, as one of the most influential and respected faces of today's Indian cinema, will act in a manner that aligns with national sentiment, the dignity of the Indian film industry, and your own stellar reputation. We look forward to your responsible and timely response on this matter,' concluded the statement. On the work front, Kartik was last seen in the horror-comedy Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3. Fans will see him next in Anurag Basu's next, which will also star Sreeleela.

Indian Gamers Are No Longer Just Students: Study Finds Surge in Women and Working Professionals

Bengaluru: A new nationwide study released by Indian electronics brand Kreo has revealed a major shift in the country's gaming landscape, with more than 35% of gamers now comprising working professionals, including engineers, entrepreneurs, creators, and marketers. Women above 35 are emerging as one of the fastest-growing gamer demographics, the study notes. Titled 'How India Games', the report draws on responses from over 5,900 gamers across the country, providing one of the most detailed portraits of the Indian gaming community to date. It comes amid rapid growth in the sector — a recent WinZO–IEIC report projected India's gaming market to more than double to $9.1 billion by 2029. Among the key insights: India's gaming population is growing at an annual rate of 16%. While 94% of gamers are still men, women above the age of 35 are entering the space in large numbers. 73% of female gamers admitted to concealing their gender online, citing experiences of harassment — yet many are leading and building new communities. Mobile phones remain the dominant gaming device for 88% of players, even among multi-platform users. Over half of all gamers express an active interest in creating content or joining the esports industry, suggesting growing ambitions around gaming careers. Interestingly, while most Indian parents still consider gaming a 'waste of time,' around 10% have begun playing alongside their children, suggesting a generational softening of attitudes. 'Gaming was an escape for me growing up,' said Ishan Sukul, Co-founder and CEO of Kreo. 'Today, it's how millions of Indians connect and express themselves. Through this report, we wanted to understand gaming not just as a hobby, but as a response to deeper cultural shifts — including loneliness and mental health.' (eom)

Is Priyanka Chopra Making Her Bollywood Comeback With Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Love And War?

Priyanka Chopra's recent throwback post about Ram Chahe Leela has sparked major speculation about her return to Bollywood. It's been a while since Priyanka Chopra graced the Hindi film screen — six years, to be precise. Ever since the global icon shifted base to the US in 2015, she's made only two Bollywood appearances, the most recent being The Sky Is Pink in 2019. But if recent speculation is to be believed, the desi girl might just be on the cusp of a long-awaited homecoming. On Friday, Chopra set the internet abuzz with a rare throwback post on Instagram — a tribute to her fiery dance number Ram Chahe Leela from Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela (2013). What stood out wasn't just the choice of memory but the unusually long, heartfelt caption that accompanied it — a rarity for the actor when it comes to revisiting past work. Sharing an insight into how the iconic number came to be, Priyanka wrote, 'When Sanjay Sir came to me with this song, it was a complicated decision, but he, as a filmmaker, has always inspired me. His creative mind, his nostalgic stories usually over incredible food, the conversations of art and music to dance… the beauty of the yesteryears but also what the future holds. And then he played the song… and I knew I was her." She went on to recall working with choreographer Vishnu Deva and cinematographer Ravi Varman, adding, 'Under Sanjay sir's guidance, Ravi Varman's cinematography shone, and Vishnu Deva's choreography was magic. Him and I would rehearse during lunch breaks every day to perfect the dance sequences. This brings back such great memories." While the post read like a sentimental throwback, it also sparked intense speculation online. Industry insiders began to wonder: Was this more than just nostalgia? Now, a source has confirmed to Hindustan Times that the post may, in fact, be a subtle nod to something on the horizon — a possible special appearance in Bhansali's next directorial, Love & War. According to the source, Priyanka may feature in a high-octane special number in the period war drama, which stars Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, and Vicky Kaushal. While nothing has been officially signed yet, discussions are reportedly underway. If the collaboration materialises, it would mark Chopra's grand return to Hindi cinema — and that too with the very filmmaker who gave her one of her most celebrated dance numbers. Love & War, currently under production, is slated for release on March 20, 2026, and is being mounted on an epic scale. Reports suggest Bhansali is planning a face-off sequence between Ranbir and Vicky that could rival some of the most iconic scenes in Indian cinema history. Meanwhile, Priyanka is also committed to a major Indian production — SSMB29, her upcoming pan-India film with SS Rajamouli and Mahesh Babu. The ambitious venture also features Prithviraj Sukumaran, though the release date remains under wraps. The film is being pegged as one of the most anticipated cinematic events of the decade.
