Streaming overtakes cable and broadcast as the most-watched form of TV
Streaming has officially surpassed broadcast and cable as a share of total TV viewing, according to Nielsen data.
In May, streaming accounted for 44.8% of viewership while broadcast (20.1%) and cable (24.1%) together represented 44.2% of overall tune-in.
"While many have expected this milestone to have occurred sooner, sporting events, news and new-season content have kept broadcast and cable TV surprisingly resilient," said Brian Fuhrer, senior vices president at Nielsen, in a video for Nielsen's The Gauge monthly viewership report. "The trend, however, has been very consistent."
While Netflix has boasted the most overall TV usage for four years straight, YouTube has now seen four-straight months of TV share increase, Nielsen said. The platform, owned by Google and its parent company Alphabet, boasted the highest share of TV consumption among all streamers in May, with a 12.5% share. Rounding out the top five were Netflix, Disney-owned platforms including ESPN and Hulu, Amazon's Prime Video, and the Roku Channel.
The three largest so-called free, ad-supported services, or FAST channels — Paramount's Pluto TV, the Roku Channel and Fox's Tubi — combined for 5.7% of total TV viewing in May, more than any individual broadcast network.
Streaming's overall share is likely to remain neck and neck with traditional TV viewership for some time before it eventually surpasses it permanently in the near future, Nielsen said.

The Guardian slammed The Sandman's second season with only two out of five stars and claimed 'Neil Gaiman's emo drama is so pretentious, it ruins everything'. It describes how 'a fug of pretension' 'smothers' the show adding, 'missing every opportunity it creates for itself'. While the Metro rated it a more impressive four out of five stars and urged 'Don't let the Neil Gaiman accusations ruin The Sandman season 2'. They praised the 'fantastic' cast and added, 'it's those playing the Endless who I found most impressive'. The Independent however, was less impressed and only rated the new series two out of five stars. It wrote how the show felt 'like being trapped in a whirlwind of plot and intrigue' but that it 'never materialises into something solid enough to get to grips with'. While The Telegraph scored the series four out of five and described it as 'brilliant'. Though they felt, 'for Netflix, you suspect this dreamy tale has become a waking nightmare that can't end too soon' and claimed 'Neil Gaiman's involvement casts a shadow'. The Wrap however, has described the new instalment as 'mesmerizing in the best way'. It comes after the first season soon soared to number one on Netflix's Top 10 list following its debut. Gaiman's comic book series was first published from 1989-1996, but previous attempts to bring his beloved story to film were held up for years until Netflix signed a deal to produce the show in 2019. The Sandman seasons one and two are available to stream on Netflix.

More info Fans of the horror genre are descending upon cinemas for the highly anticipated premiere of 28 Years Later, the long-awaited sequel to the influential zombie film 28 Days Later. Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Danny Boyle and written by accomplished screenwriter Alex Garland, the movie picks up nearly three decades after the events of the original 2002 film. The first instalment introduced audiences to a then-relatively unknown Cillian Murphy and the terrifying 'rage' virus, which redefined the zombie genre with its fast-paced, adrenaline-fuelled portrayal of the undead. The original film received widespread critical acclaim for its groundbreaking depiction of zombies, departing from the traditional slow-moving creatures often seen in horror movies. Now, the franchise is back with a vengeance. Set in the year 2057, it tells the tale of a team sent to the stars tasked with rekindling our dimming sun, thus saving humanity from the brink. Their odyssey takes an intricate turn upon discovering an erstwhile spacecraft that had embarked on an identical quest. Including notables like Cillian, Rose Byrne, Michelle Yeoh, Chris Evans, and Benedict Wong, 'Sunshine' is up for viewing on Disney+. A fan exclaimed: "Sunshine is the most underrated movie of all time. No exaggeration. For me personally it is my favourite movie. I discovered this movie in 2020 and since I have seen it about 16 times." Another fan said: "Watched this for the first time and I already know I will watch it again, and make others watch it as well.
