The BMW S85B50 5.0-liter V10, found in the E60 M5 and E63 M6, remains one of the boldest engines ever fitted to a production sedan. A naturally aspirated marvel, void of any connection to other production power plants, it revs up to 8,250 rpm and produces over 500 horsepower in stock form. It was the German marque's love letter to its BMW Sauber Formula One endeavors. The sound alone, an orchestral scream of ten cylinders, cemented its status as one of the best engines ever made by BMW.
But with that performance and aural renown came at a price. The S85 is notoriously high-maintenance. Regular oil changes, rod bearing inspections, premium fluids, and an owner who knows what they're doing are all non-negotiable. These engines were never meant for casual ownership or neglect.
And yet, as a recent teardown video reveals – courtesy of our favorite engine coroner, I Do Cars – not even BMW's best engineering can overcome years of corner-cutting maintenance.
The engine under the spotlight came from a 2006 M6 with 121,000 miles on the clock, a surprising mileage for an S85 given its condition. Bought at auction, the car wasn't running, and the engine was locked up.
The story inside was quickly revealed at the beginning of the teardown: oil varnish coated the internals, indicating long oil change intervals with cheap fluids. The valve covers and cylinder heads showed signs of excessive sludge buildup, and the oil control rings were so plugged that the engine was visibly burning oil.
Surprisingly, the intake ports and some top-end components were relatively clean, suggesting this M6 wasn't driven hard, but rather babied like a regular 6er. That may have saved it from a more dramatic failure, but treated like a regular commuter, it died a slow death.

The fatal failure came in the form of a rolled rod bearing. Two bearing shells had fused and stacked inside the rod, pushing the piston slightly higher in the bore. That minor increase in travel was enough for the piston to strike the cylinder head. The damage wasn't dramatic – no holes in the block, no thrown rods – but it was enough to kill the engine.
For all its brilliance, the S85 is not bulletproof. It demands devotion from an enthusiast who knows the ins and outs of owning a beautifully engineered, performance mill. And, evidently, when it doesn't get it, the results are as inevitable as they are heartbreaking.

Elon Musk Says Grok Is Coming to Tesla EVs

Get ready for a few hard right turns. 'Grok is coming to Tesla vehicles very soon. Next week at the latest,' Elon Musk stated Thursday in a post on X. The EV brand would catch up with the likes of Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen, which have already integrated ChatGPT into their vehicles as voice assistants. The announcement follows a livestream late Wednesday that Musk held with xAI colleagues where the billionaire unveiled Grok 4, the latest AI model from xAI, his multibillion-dollar initiative to rival OpenAI and Google. The timing for both announcements is unfortunate for an embattled Musk. Over the past few days, a version of Grok built into Musk's X social media platform praised Adolf Hitler and provided antisemitic responses to multiple prompts from X users. On Wednesday, X CEO Linda Yaccarino said she was leaving the company without elaborating on her reasoning or plans. It remains to be seen whether Musk can make good on his promise of having Grok-powered Telsas roaming the streets so soon after his declaration, especially as he has had so much trouble delivering on past assurances. Mercedes-Benz was one of the earliest adopters of LLMs in its cars, integrating ChatGPT into the voice control of its vehicles last year through the MBUX Voice Assistant's "Hey Mercedes" feature. Then it deployed a 'general knowledge' function using OpenAI's large-language model to millions of vehicles. In January, Mercedes announced a new AI feature that saw the German automaker launch a 'conversational navigation' feature powered by Google Automotive AI Agent running its Gemini chatbot. The upgrade allows much more conversational queries, moving from 'Find me the nearest curry house' to questions such as 'Hey Mercedes, I'm a little hungry. Any suggestions for dinner in Austin?' It's unknown how conversational Grok will be in Musk's Teslas. Fortunately, in response to the chatbot's antisemitic tirade, xAI said on Tuesday that it would be implementing initiatives that would 'ban hate speech before Grok posts on X.' This will hopefully mean Tesla owners won't be subjected to Nazi doctrine from their faithful electric ride when asking if there's a decent brisket available nearby. It's also unclear if Tesla owners will have to pay for Grok access in their EVs, or how much it might cost. While the version of the chatbot on X is free, users will have to pay access $30 a month for Grok 4 through the Grok website or app. And access to a more capable version known as Grok 4 Heavy will cost considerably more, $300 per month. Of course, should Tesla owners not wish to use Musk's Grok in their Teslas they will have other in-car options, thanks to the brand's web browser. This allows access to Grok rivals such as Anthropic's Claude as well as potentially Open AI's own browser, which could also be out in the wild within weeks.

Hyundai Ioniq 6 N Revealed: 641 HP, a New Face, and a Wing

Hyundai unveiled its first high-performance electric vehicle at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in 2023, and today, two years later, it's launching its second. The Hyundai Ioniq 6 N joins the lineup as EV sales begin to falter, but it packs a ton of power into a practical package that shouldn't break the bank when it goes on sale. The Ioniq 6 N has two electric motors making 601 horsepower and 546 pound-feet of torque. However, N Grin Boost can increase the output to 641 hp and 568 lb-ft for 10 seconds, matching the 5 N's output. With N Launch Control, the 6 N can hit 62 miles per hour in 3.2 seconds on its way to a 160-mph top speed. Hyundai says it fully redesigned the suspension geometry and reengineered the chassis for better handling. The 6N features new stroke-sensing electronically controlled dampers, which integrate a sensor that allows the vehicle to adjust the damping force based on driving conditions. N Drift Optimizer and N Torque Distribution also help manage the car's power for increased fun and capability. Photo by: Hyundai The EV has four-piston front and single-piston rear brakes with 15.7- and 14.1-inch discs, respectively. It rides on 20-inch wheels wrapped in 275/35R20 Pirelli P-Zero 5 tires developed for the 6 N. Visually, the 6 N features a swan-neck rear wing for added downforce and wider fenders to accommodate its revamped stance. Hyundai's High-Performance Technology Is Here The 6 N features an upgraded N e-Shift system that minimizes performance loss and improves the sound quality. It works with the N Ambient Shift Light, which synchronizes the ambient light with the simulated gear shift change. Hyundai also includes N Active Sound+ with three unique options: a motorsport-inspired 'Ignition,' an EV sound with heritage vibes called 'Evolution,' and the futuristic sci-fi tones named 'Lightspeed.' Hyundai says the 6 N will travel up to 291 miles on a charge, based on Europe's WLTP standards. That will be less in the United States. The Ioniq 5 N , which has the same size 84.0-kilowatt-hour battery, is rated to travel up to 221 miles. Photo by: Hyundai Photo by: Hyundai Hyundai will offer the high-powered EV in the following colors: Performance Blue Pearl, Abyss Black Pearl, Serenity White Pearl, Nocturne Gray Metallic, Nocturne Gray Matte, and Gravity Gold Matte. The automaker will also offer a global catalog of N performance parts, enabling owners to customize their EVs. 2026 Ioniq 6 N Pricing Mystery Hyundai hasn't released pricing information for the Hyundai 6 N or when it'll go on sale. The automaker revamped the regular Ioniq 6 for 2026 but hasn't shared pricing for the updated model. The 2025 Ioniq 5 N starts at $67,800, including destination, and we expect the Ioniq 6 N to have a similar price tag, making it a performance value. It could be cheaper, too. The regular Ioniq 6 is about $5,000 less to start than the standard Ioniq 5, which might mean the 6 N could cost in the low $60,000 range. We'll likely receive specific details closer to the car's on-sale date. Hyundai Ioniq 6 N Photo by: Hyundai Here's More From Hyundai: Hyundai Promised It Would Keep Buttons. Bonkers on a Whole New Level: Rimac Nevera R Sets 24 Speed and Stop Records

You think your car is fast? Well, Rimac says its Nevera R has a hard lesson on just how fast an all-electric hypercar can be—and how quickly it can stop. It's a lesson that may make you question the reality we live in. The Rimac Nevera R is claiming 24 records, including for 0–60 mph time, 0–249–0 mph, and a new top speed mark for EVs. Enhanced aerodynamics and new Michelin tires contributed to its performance, as did 2,107 hp from its four electric motors. This summary was generated by AI using content from this MotorTrend article Read Next Recently, the 2025 Porsche Taycan Turbo GT Weissach (yes, that's a mouthful) delivered the quickest 0–60-mph times we've ever recorded with an official 1.89-second blast. Per drag racing protocol, that time is minus our standard one-foot rollout; the raw time is a still-nuts 2.10 seconds. (You can read all about our testing procedures right here.) The rest of the top five (with rollout deducted): the non-Weissach Taycan GT (1.94), the Tesla Model S Plaid (2.07), Ferrari SF90 Stradale Assetto Fiorano (2.10), and the Lucid Air Sapphire (2.16). The Turbo GT Weissach can also haul itself to a stop quite capably, getting down from 60 mph in just 90 feet. We provide all of this information for context on what you're about to read. While we'd need to verify the numbers for the Rimac Nevera R ourselves to get it an official slot in our rankings, the Croatian company is reporting an absolutely scorching 1.66-second 0–60 that includes a one-foot rollout. This number as well as the others were certified, Rimac says, by Dewesoft at the Automotive Testing Papenburg proving grounds in Germany. With that much velocity off the hop, the Nevera R is said to have set 24 new records (including 23 the previous Nevera R set in 2023). The big one is the 0–400–0-kph sprint and stop (0-249-0 mph): In the time it probably took you to read to this point of the story, the Nevera R has already completed that run and reset the bar to 25.79 seconds. Adding 1 mph to round out the run to 250 mph added 0.41-second to the time (26.20 seconds). If you're curious, its quarter-mile time is 7.90 seconds, the standing mile is 19.71 seconds, and it is touting a record-setting top speed for EVs at 268.2 mph. The 2025 Nevera R was able to achieve these records, the company says, due to reengineering the major components of a "regular' Nevera. This includes a new aerodynamics package with a fixed rear wing and enlarged diffuser, which generated 15 percent more downforce while also improving its aero efficiency by 10 percent. A new set of Michelin Cup 2 tires also increased mechanical grip while its all-wheel torque vectoring system (the car uses four individual motors) was recalibrated to handle the higher traction levels. With its extreme abilities and a total output of 2,107 hp, the Nevera R is truly bonkers on another level.
