(Bernama pic) GOMBAK: Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd's (KTMB) Komuter services have yet to turn a profit due to the low fares subsidised by the government, says transport minister Loke Siew Fook. While raising ticket prices could help KTM Komuter become profitable, he said this is not a priority at the moment as KTMB is a GLC with a social responsibility. 'Of course, we hope they can eventually achieve financial sustainability. However, that is not our primary concern right now. 'What's more important is improving operational efficiency over time and narrowing the funding gap,' he said after the launch of new diesel buses at the Rapid Bus Complex in Batu Caves. Loke added that KTMB's cargo service and electric train service (ETS) continue to be profitable. 'The key is to ensure that KTMB's overall operations continue to improve, particularly for KTM Komuter, ETS, and the cargo services, which are already generating profits,' he said. 72 Sabah dilapidated school upgrades completed

Published on: Sunday, August 03, 2025 Published on: Sun, Aug 03, 2025 By: Patimang Abdul Ghani Text Size: PITAS: Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan said 72 of 111 dilapidated school upgrade projects in Sabah have been completed at a cost of RM359 million, with 37 more worth RM631 million under construction. One project worth RM12.6 million is in the design stage and another worth RM54 million is at the procurement stage, bringing the total to nearly RM1 billion. During a visit to SMK Pinggan-Pinggan in Pitas, Ahmad said all works are via open tender to ensure timely or early completion. The RM27 million SMK Pinggan-Pinggan project, 78pc complete, includes two hostel blocks, warden houses, a dining hall for 400 students, and support facilities. The new hostel, to be completed in December 2025, will replace one located 1.3km away, which forces students to walk along busy roads without pedestrian paths. Ahmad said it will improve safety, reduce absenteeism, and provide better living conditions. He added that these projects reflect the Madani government's commitment to improving rural education infrastructure and narrowing the urban-rural education gap. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? EPF mulling two-tier account system to support post-retirement income, says deputy finance minister

Published on: Saturday, August 02, 2025 Published on: Sat, Aug 02, 2025 By: Malay Mail Text Size: The EPF's proposed two-tier structure — separating savings into flexible and income accounts — aims to provide members with a more stable post-retirement income. — Picture by Choo Choy May Kuala Lumpur: The Employees Provident Fund (EPF) is proposing a two-tier restructuring of members' retirement savings to provide a more stable and sustainable income stream after retirement, Deputy Finance Minister Lim Hui Ying said today. In a Facebook post, she said the proposed new structure will split future EPF contributions into two components — a Flexible Savings account, which members can withdraw at any time, and an Income Savings account, which will be disbursed periodically until depleted. 'This is a key step towards ensuring members have a structured and reliable income during retirement,' she said. Lim stressed that the proposed changes will not affect the existing withdrawal rights of current EPF members. The new structure will apply only to new members after the implementation date, while existing members may choose to opt in voluntarily. She added that the proposal is still in its early stages and that the government is committed to gathering public feedback before proceeding. 'The Madani government will continue to listen to the people and conduct thorough engagement sessions before any implementation. The aim is clear — to help Malaysians manage their retirement savings in a more structured, fair and sustainable way,' she said. The proposed reform is part of the government's broader push to improve long-term financial security for retirees, amid concerns about premature withdrawals and the adequacy of savings in later years. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
