Amanah eyes three seats in Sabah polls
KOTA KINABALU: Tanjung Aru, Lumadan and Sulabayan are three seats currently being eyed by Amanah in the upcoming Sabah election, says party president Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu.
'However, these are only our wishes and aspirations but whether we will get these seats is not confirmed and final yet,' he said, adding that the aim is to minimise clashes with Pakatan Harapan's electoral partners in Sabah.
Amanah, DAP and PKR make up the Pakatan coalition, which has announced plans to work together with Sabah Barisan Nasional in the regional polls.
It is learnt that so far, Amanah has been allocated two of the 73 seats up for grabs in the election, but Mohamad declined to reveal them.
As for the Tanjung Aru and Sulabayan seats, they are currently held by Parti Warisan's Datuk Junz Wong and Datuk Jaujan Sambakong respectively.
Lumadan is represented by Parti Bersatu Sabah's (PBS) Datuk Ruslan Muharam.
Asked about whether it would be reckless for Amanah to contest in the Warisan stronghold of Sulabayan, Mohamad said: 'This is just our intention. It is not final yet and it does not mean that Amanah will definitely get this seat.'
He added that discussions on seat allocations are still ongoing among Pakatan parties and between Pakatan and its Sabah allies.
Mohamad, who is also Agriculture and Food Security Minister, was speaking to reporters after launching the party's election machinery here yesterday.
Earlier during his speech, he criticised those playing up religious and ethnic sentiments for political gain.
One of the false narratives being stirred up is that the Chinese community is trying to take over the country, he noted.
'We must stop it because if we don't step in now, it would not do good for the country,' said Mohamad.
'Look at the population statistics. The Chinese population is becoming smaller while the Malay population is growing.
'So, how is it possible that the Chinese will to take over this country?'

GRS supreme council yet to endorse electoral pact with Pakatan, says SAPP chief
KOTA KINABALU: The Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) supreme council has yet to discuss and collectively agree to endorse the electoral pact with Pakatan Harapan, says Datuk Seri Yong Teck Lee. The Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) president said so far, the GRS supreme council had not held a meeting to endorse the electoral pact with Pakatan announced by Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor on Sunday on the sidelines of the Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah annual general meeting. "There has not been a meeting of the Supreme Council in the last few months. If and when there is a meeting, of course, we will attend. "As for what might happen, it depends. For example, what has been agreed between the GRS chairman and Pakatan? Was anything agreed at all?" Yong asked. Hajiji's announcement of the pact took several of the eight party GRS leaders by surprise. The leaders declined to make any immediate comments, saying they wanted clarification on the matter first. Yong said that Hajiji had discussed the matter with GRS component party presidents but nothing was finalised until approved by the GRS supreme council. He also said it was confusing as Pakatan and Barisan have said that they have finalised seat allocation for the Sabah polls. GRS had shown signs it was keen to go solo but Hajiji had constantly voiced preference to continue working with Pakatan for political stability. GRS and Barisan, who worked together to topple the state government under Warisan-Pakatan government in the September 2020 state polls, have been at loggerheads since Barisan pulled its support for Hajiji in January 2023. Sabah Pakatan gave their backing to GRS for the Hajiji-led government to remain in power.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced the agreement after chairing the special meeting between Thailand and Cambodia at the Seri Perdana Complex here. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand's acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai attended the meeting, which began at 3 pm. Also in attendance were United States (US) Ambassador to Malaysia Edgard Kagan and Chinese Ambassador to Malaysia Ouyang Yujing. The US was a co-organiser of the meeting, while China, an observer to promote a peaceful resolution to the ongoing situation. 'Prime Minister Hun Manet and acting Prime Minister Phumtham have expressed their positions and willingness for an immediate ceasefire and return to normalcy. 'As the current Chair of Asean, Malaysia stands ready to coordinate an observer team to verify and ensure its implementation. 'Malaysia will also consult with fellow Asean member states to participate in the observation effort, reflecting a regional commitment to supporting peace on the ground,' he said at a joint press conference. During the joint press conference, Anwar said Cambodia and Thailand reached a common understanding, including an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, with effect from 24:00 hours (local time) on July 28. 'This is a vital first step towards de-escalation and the restoration of peace and security,' he said. He added that Thailand and Cambodia will hold an informal meeting of regional commanders on July 29 at 7 am, followed by a meeting with Defence Attachés led by the Asean Chair, subject to mutual agreement. He added that Thailand and Cambodia will convene a meeting of the General Border Committee (GBC) on Aug 4 to be hosted by Cambodia. Anwar said Thailand and Cambodia also agreed to resume direct communications between both prime ministers, foreign ministers, and defence ministers. He added that the foreign ministers and defence ministers of Malaysia, Cambodia, and Thailand have been instructed to develop a detailed mechanism for the implementation, verification, and reporting of the ceasefire. 'This mechanism will serve as a foundation for sustained peace and accountability,' he said. Anwar said the meeting reaffirms the shared resolve of Malaysia, Cambodia, and Thailand to uphold the principles of international law, peaceful co-existence, and multilateral cooperation in the pursuit of a just and lasting resolution to the situation. He said US President Donald J. Trump has been in contact with the leaders of both countries, urging the leaders to find a peaceful solution to the situation. He added that the Chinese side had kept close contact with Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia, and relevant countries to actively promote dialogue, ceasefire, and restoring peace. 'The presence and collaboration of all parties underscore a shared commitment to peace, dialogue, and regional stability,' he said. The two Southeast Asian neighbours have a long history of diplomatic rows over an 817-kilometre undemarcated stretch of their shared border. Tensions between Thailand and Cambodia have been simmering since May 28 following a skirmish between their troops near the disputed Preah Vihear border area, which claimed the life of a Cambodian soldier. The latest round of hostilities erupted on July 24. Armed clashes have been reported along Cambodia's northern border region, with fatalities on both sides. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
