Thailand, Cambodia agree to ceasefire: Anwar

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced the agreement after chairing the special meeting between Thailand and Cambodia at the Seri Perdana Complex here. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand's acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai attended the meeting, which began at 3 pm. Also in attendance were United States (US) Ambassador to Malaysia Edgard Kagan and Chinese Ambassador to Malaysia Ouyang Yujing. The US was a co-organiser of the meeting, while China, an observer to promote a peaceful resolution to the ongoing situation. 'Prime Minister Hun Manet and acting Prime Minister Phumtham have expressed their positions and willingness for an immediate ceasefire and return to normalcy. 'As the current Chair of Asean, Malaysia stands ready to coordinate an observer team to verify and ensure its implementation. 'Malaysia will also consult with fellow Asean member states to participate in the observation effort, reflecting a regional commitment to supporting peace on the ground,' he said at a joint press conference. During the joint press conference, Anwar said Cambodia and Thailand reached a common understanding, including an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, with effect from 24:00 hours (local time) on July 28. 'This is a vital first step towards de-escalation and the restoration of peace and security,' he said. He added that Thailand and Cambodia will hold an informal meeting of regional commanders on July 29 at 7 am, followed by a meeting with Defence Attachés led by the Asean Chair, subject to mutual agreement. He added that Thailand and Cambodia will convene a meeting of the General Border Committee (GBC) on Aug 4 to be hosted by Cambodia. Anwar said Thailand and Cambodia also agreed to resume direct communications between both prime ministers, foreign ministers, and defence ministers. He added that the foreign ministers and defence ministers of Malaysia, Cambodia, and Thailand have been instructed to develop a detailed mechanism for the implementation, verification, and reporting of the ceasefire. 'This mechanism will serve as a foundation for sustained peace and accountability,' he said. Anwar said the meeting reaffirms the shared resolve of Malaysia, Cambodia, and Thailand to uphold the principles of international law, peaceful co-existence, and multilateral cooperation in the pursuit of a just and lasting resolution to the situation. He said US President Donald J. Trump has been in contact with the leaders of both countries, urging the leaders to find a peaceful solution to the situation. He added that the Chinese side had kept close contact with Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia, and relevant countries to actively promote dialogue, ceasefire, and restoring peace. 'The presence and collaboration of all parties underscore a shared commitment to peace, dialogue, and regional stability,' he said. The two Southeast Asian neighbours have a long history of diplomatic rows over an 817-kilometre undemarcated stretch of their shared border. Tensions between Thailand and Cambodia have been simmering since May 28 following a skirmish between their troops near the disputed Preah Vihear border area, which claimed the life of a Cambodian soldier. The latest round of hostilities erupted on July 24. Malaysia's structural reforms key to economic resilience says BNM governor
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's ongoing structural reforms to ensure long-term resilience are critical to defend the economy against global shocks, Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) Governor Datuk Seri Abdul Rasheed Ghaffour said during an exclusive interview with Bernama. He said Malaysia's foresight enabled the country to weather these shocks, such as the ravaging COVID-19 pandemic five years ago and impending challenges brought on by the United States' imposition of tariffs. He said Malaysia's endeavour to push for social equity and fiscal sustainability has also reinforced the economy and elevated it to a position of strength. This includes preparing a future-ready workforce and enhancing social protection systems. Malaysia's foresight in undertaking financial and economic reforms over the decades has helped strengthen the nation's economic fundamentals, enabling the country to weather uncertainties. 'Where we are today, the position of strength that we have, our ability to weather the pandemic and tariff developments, comes from our previous structural reforms. That is why we need to really continue on this path,' he said. Abdul Rasheed emphasised that the government's commitment to reform, particularly through rebuilding fiscal space, is important for the government to support the economy effectively during challenging periods. He also commended the government's implementation of key national strategies, including the National Investment Aspirations (NIA), New Industrial Master Plan 2030 (NIMP), National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) and National Semiconductor Strategy (NSS), as initiatives which attracted quality investments and generated high-paying job opportunities. Key to this, he said, are policies to attract high-quality investments that increase economic complexity, create high-value jobs, extend domestic linkages, develop economic clusters and improve inclusivity, in line with the NIA. As evidence, Malaysia has recorded a historic high of approved investments amounting to RM378.5 billion in 2024, he said. 'We want high-quality investments that create high-quality jobs, high-income jobs and have strong domestic linkages. 'That also creates complexity in the economy. This is what Malaysia needs, and the plans have all these elements,' he said. He added that it is also important for Malaysia to embark on the next phase of reforms. Beyond creating new, higher-paying jobs, the central bank governor said Malaysia needs to create a more agile and future-ready workforce through labour market reforms, while enhancing the nation's social protection systems. 'The country is working hard to attract quality investments, which will in turn create high-quality and high-income jobs. Our workforce must be ready for this, and so will need to be re-skilled and up-skilled. 'The education system must evolve in tandem to better prepare Malaysians for an increasingly digital and knowledge-driven economy,' he said. On social security, Abdul Rasheed stressed the need to improve the design and targeting of assistance programmes to ensure inclusivity, maximise impact, and ensure that objectives are being met. He highlighted that funding for these education, healthcare, social protection and other initiatives can be further strengthened by channelling savings from fiscal consolidation efforts, including rationalising subsidies. He also said that the government remains committed to reforms, and at the same time, acknowledges the challenges faced by certain segments of the rakyat. These include facing ongoing cost-of-living pressure. He said that targeted rollout of measures, alongside supportive measures, can help ease the transition. On July 23, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced a cost-of-living relief package, which includes a one-off RM100 SARA cash aid, a reduction in the RON95 fuel price, toll hike postponements and an expanded Rahmah Madani Sales allocation. - Bernama

Malaysia Madani Rakyat Disantuni theme song for HKHM 2025
PUTRAJAYA: All ministries, agencies and government offices are required to play the National Day and Malaysia Day (HKHM) 2025 theme song 'Malaysia MADANI Rakyat Disantuni'. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the move is part of efforts to ignite the spirit of the National Month. Fahmi, the spokesperson for the MADANI Government, said the song, composed by Datuk Mokhzani Ismail, arranged by young composer Affan Mazlan and performed by national songstress Datuk Seri Siti Nurhaliza, is very catchy, melodious and pleasant to listen to. 'I feel this year's theme song is truly magical and extraordinary. The song has also caught the attention and praise of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim himself, who said it was 'really, really good',' he said during the Communications Ministry's monthly assembly here today. The HKHM 2025 theme song was officially introduced for the first time at the National Month Launch and Jalur Gemilang Flag-Raising Ceremony 2025 held at Dataran Tanjung Emas in Muar, Johor last Sunday. Fahmi said the Communications Ministry's focus at the moment is to ensure that all aspects of preparation for the HKHM celebrations run smoothly, including field activities, security, broadcasting and official performances. He also called on ministry staff and its agencies to enliven the National Month spirit by playing an effective communication role. Also present were Deputy Minister of Communications Teo Nie Ching; Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa; Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) Chief Executive Officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin and Bernama Editor-in-Chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj. 'I am asking that in this ministry, the theme song be played either in the lobby or as background music during official events. 'We will also propose to the Prime Minister's Department (JPM) that this song be played at all official events attended by the Prime Minister during the National Month. This will be discussed further with JPM,' he said. On preparations for the National Day and Malaysia Day celebrations, Fahmi said the Communications Ministry is currently addressing connectivity issues, as well as safety and traffic control aspects at the celebration venues. 'A lot of preparations are underway and so far I am satisfied. We are also planning some special 'gimmick' elements for both celebrations,' he said. PONTIANAK (July 30): A Sarawak delegation led by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hassan has met with West Kalimantan (Kalbar) Governor Drs H Ria Norsan here to strengthen regional ties. The pivotal meeting underscored Sarawak's commitment to deepening bilateral ties, attracting high-value investments, fostering innovation, and enhancing regional economic integration. During the meeting, Awang Tengah, who is Minister of International Trade, Industry and Investment, highlighted Sarawak's role as a regional leader in renewable energy and a hub for semiconductor and aerospace industries, emphasising the state's drive for high-value investments and innovation. The discussion also covered air connectivity, including the resumption of the Kuching-Pontianak flight this September, the Sarawak government's takeover of MASwings and its rebranding as AirBorneo, as well as the 2024 launch of the Singkawang-Kuching bus route.
