Congress in alliance with Jamaat-e-Islami, driven by opportunism: BJP

Indian Express12 hours ago
Kerala BJP chief Rajeev Chandrasekhar on Wednesday accused the Congress of being in alliance with 'Jamaat-e-Islami, a proscribed, anti-democratic, anti-Constitution, and anti-national organisation, driven purely by sheer political opportunism', while speaking about protecting the Constitution and secularism.
The Rajya Sabha MP's attack came after RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, at an event organised by the Imarat-e-Shariah, said that if the Mahagathbandhan bloc returns to power after the Bihar Assembly elections due later this year, it will 'throw the Waqf Amendment Act in the dustbin'.
Alleging that the Congress was pursuing a policy of appeasement, Chandrasekhar claimed that in Bihar the Congress was working in 'alliance with Imarat-e-Sharia', and in southern states like Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh, 'it is aligning with Jamaat-e-Islami'.
'This is the height of Congress's shameless politics, fueled by desperation,' he said.
'In Karnataka, Congress even has tacit understanding with groups like SDPI and PFI. We have seen earlier as well how Congress has followed a policy of appeasement even in matters of national security and terrorism,' he said.
During the bypolls to Kerala's Nilambur Assembly seat — which falls under the Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency, represented by Priyanka Gandhi Vadra — he alleged that the Congress 'openly took the support of this dangerous organisation Jamaat-e-Islami'. In the bypoll, the Congress pulled off a stunning victory against the CPI(M), and wrested the seat from the LDF.
Slamming the Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, Chandrasekhar said, 'On one hand, Rahul Gandhi and Congress roam around with a copy of the Constitution in their hands and talk about secularism, on the other hand they fight elections in alliance with an anti-national, anti-democratic and anti-constitutional organisation that believes in Islamic rule. This is the real face of Congress' opportunistic politics,' he said.
'Congress has, for decades, practiced the politics of incitement, fear, and deception. Today, people from all communities have come to see the truth about Congress that its only consistent strategy is Muslim appeasement,' he said.

Mamdani accused Trump of trying to divide people and using personal attacks to distract from his failures to help working-class Americans. In a video posted on X, Mamdani vowed not to back down, saying he would keep fighting against Republican efforts to silence dissent. 'Yesterday, Donald Trump said that I should be arrested. He said that I should be deported. He said that I should be denaturalised,' Mamdani said during a rally in New York. 'He's saying these things not only because of who I am—a potential first immigrant mayor, first Muslim, and first South Asian mayor of this city—but because he wants to distract from what I fight for. I fight for working people.' STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Since Mamdani's primary victory, Trump has repeatedly attacked him, calling him a 'communist' and a 'lunatic,' and making remarks about his background. Mamdani criticised Trump for fuelling division instead of addressing the struggles of working-class Americans across the country. He also condemned Trump's major tax and spending proposal, known as the 'One Big Beautiful Bill,' which faces a key vote in Congress on Thursday. More from World Is Zohran Mamdani at risk of losing his US citizenship? Mamdani claimed Trump is attacking him to avoid discussing the bill, which he argues would cut healthcare access and leave more people hungry. His comments come a day after Trump threatened to arrest Mamdani over his promise to limit New York City's cooperation with federal immigration authorities. 'Well then, we'll have to arrest him,' Trump said during a visit to a Florida detention centre, referring to Mamdani's vow not to assist ICE. 'We'll be watching over him very carefully on behalf of the nation.' Trump also falsely claimed Mamdani might be in the US illegally, saying, 'A lot of people are saying he's here illegally.'

Women, youth must enter politics in large numbers, says Kishan Reddy

Hyderabad: Union Minister Kishan Reddy on Wednesday took part in the 'Mock Parliament session' held at KMIT on the occasion of 50 years of Congress Emergency by state BJP Mahila Morcha. Speaking on the occasion, he said in the future, there was a need for youth and women to enter politics in large numbers in the country. He said Prime Minister Narendra Modi's aspiration was to introduce moral and righteous politics and reminded that Modi had called for one lakh youth across the country to enter into politics. 'The young men and women who participated in this mock parliament should rise to the level of having to argue in Parliament in the future. The Indian Constitution is the best one in the world. In many countries like Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka, internal crises have arisen in those countries due to the violation of the constitution and suppression of democracy with military regimes. In India, we are implementing the constitution framed by Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar. However, in 1975, during the rule of Indira Gandhi, the Constitution was set aside, civil rights were suppressed, and freedom of the press was taken away, and Emergency was imposed. On that day, without discussing it in the cabinet, the President was forced to sign it at midnight and lakhs of people were arrested before dawn. Among those arrested were Jayaprakash Narayan, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Lal Krishna Advani, V. Rama Rao, Venkaiah Naidu and Bandaru Dattatreya. We are organizing this mock parliament with the intention of making today's generation aware of the anti-democratic actions that took place during the Emergency,' he said. Reddy recalled during the rule of Indira Gandhi, when the problems of corruption and unemployment increased exponentially, Navnirman Samiti was formed in Gujarat and Bihar and added that a large-scale movement was launched by students against the Emergency and added that the police caned them. He recalled that in 1971, Socialist leader Raj Narayan, who lost the Lok Sabha elections, filed a case in the Allahabad High Court with evidence alleging that Indira Gandhi had engaged in electoral corruption and misused the power machinery. Indira Gandhi brought a new ordinance and postponed the elections in the name of internal crisis in the country. 'The elections that were supposed to be held once every five years were postponed for another year and an emergency was imposed. On that day, many Vidyarthi Parishad and Jana Sangh activists, women's groups, youth groups, reporters, and politicians in Hyderabad city were lathicharged and arrested under the MISA Act. The Indira Gandhi government violated the constitutional rights of the people who claimed that they had the right to speak out against the Emergency. After the elections in 1977, when the Emergency was lifted, only a few of those arrested were released. Later, the Janata Party, formed under the leadership of Jayaprakash Narayan, came forward to protect the country's democracy. In that election, all the ministers of the Indira Gandhi government were defeated and the Janata Party won through a silent revolution of the people,' he recalled.

CM will launch distribution of new ration cards on July 14, says Uttam

Hyderabad: State Irrigation, Food & Civil Supplies Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy announced on Wednesday that the state government would begin distributing new ration cards from July 14 at Tirumalagiri in Tungaturthi constituency. The programme will be formally inaugurated by Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, with Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka also participating. The Minister directed collectors to complete verification of all eligible applications by July 13 to ensure no deserving family was left out. Uttam Kumar Reddy stressed that the beneficiary selection process must be transparent and corruption-free. 'The government's focus is to ensure that every eligible person gets a ration card without any discrimination,' he said, adding that review meetings will now be held twice a month to maintain strict oversight. Uttam Kumar Reddy explained that Telangana's flagship free fine rice scheme delivers 6 kg of rice per person every month to nearly 3.10 crore people, about 84% of the population, through fair price shops, at a cost of over Rs 13,000 crore annually. In June, July, and August, the state provided three months' worth of rations at once to ensure uninterrupted supply, distributing 18 kg per person, 105 kg per Antyodaya family, and 30 kg per Annapurna family. He sharply criticised the previous BRS government for neglecting food security and ration card enrolment. 'At the time of Telangana's formation in 2014, there were 89.73 lakh white ration cards, but the BRS added only around 49,000 new cards, mostly during by-elections, ignoring lakhs of families,' Uttam Kumar Reddy pointed out. He said the Congress government had received lakhs of new applications and was addressing them in a mission-driven manner.
