Trial runs on Phase I of Metro Line 9 - the elevated stretch between Dahisar East and Kashigaon in Mira-Bhayandar - are set to commence as the corridor has been energised for traction power. The trial runs mark a major milestone in the development of the 11.4-km line, an extension of the operational Metro Line 7. Thus, Line 9 is the Metro that connects Mumbai with Mira-Bhayandar.Once fully functional, the corridor is expected to alleviate vehicular congestion on Western Express Highway (WEH) and reduce overcrowding on Western Railway's suburban trains, particularly for daily commuters from the fast-growing Mira-Bhayander belt.'We are one step closer to operationalising a critical link in Mumbai's expanding Metro network,' said a senior official from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority MMRDA ).Metro Line 9 is a crucial north-western suburban corridor that links Dahisar (East) to Mira Bhayander, passing through densely populated nodes like Kashigaon and Mira Road. Once operational, it will serve as a feeder corridor to Line 7, which is already in service between Dahisar East and Gundavali (Andheri East). It will also offer seamless connectivity to commuters heading towards the domestic airport via the upcoming Line 7A and further onwards to South Mumbai via Line 3A.Additionally, the upcoming interchanges at Dahisar East (with Line 7) and at Gundavali (with Line 1 and Line 2A) will create a networked transport experience, reducing reliance on road-based transport and offering faster commute choices.According to MMRDA, the line shall reduce current travel times by 50-75% depending on road conditions.Urban transport experts believe the commissioning of Line 9 will decongest major arterial roads such as WEH and reduce the load on local trains, particularly during peak hours. 'The daily struggle for space in Virar-bound locals could ease marginally once commuters from Mira-Bhayandar have a reliable Metro option,' said a senior planner from MMRDA.Commercial operations are likely to begin before the end of the year after obtaining clearances from the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS).

On Thursday, MMMOCL ran trial trips with two additional trains on the corridors during peak hours to judge their operational viability. Sources said that, depending on the outcome of the trial run, a decision will be made to incorporate these trains into regular operations. On July 8, a record 3.01 lakh commuters travelled through these two metro lines, the highest ever single-day ridership. Officials mentioned that the number of passengers is increasing gradually, particularly during rush office hours, resulting in platform and train congestion. Currently, 284 daily trips are run on Metro Line 2A and Line 7 together. In response to growing demand for passengers, there is a call to cut down on headway between two trains and add more trips. To respond to this, the transport authority piloted running two more trains on Thursday, aside from the standard schedule. It was stated by officials that the success or failure of the test run would determine if the services can be run regularly. With the additional services put in place, the number of operating trains on the two corridors will be 30. The growing ridership has prompted transport planners to look at ways to optimise capacity and improve frequency on both corridors. MMMOCL will make a decision in the next few days about routine deployment of the two new trains after reviewing performance figures on the trial run.

It will be better if the administration operates more trains during morning and evening hours. Frequency should be increased to every four to five minutes," Hande said. Another Maha Metro official said, "Metro has advanced technology in place; trains can run every five minutes. The administration successfully operated trains at five-minute intervals during the time when the Palkhi processions passed through Pune." On the proposal to attach more coaches to existing trains, the official explained that all trains can have six coaches, and even platforms at all Metro stations are equipped for six-coach trains. Maha Mumbai Metro records 3.01 lakh single-day ridership on July 8, the highest so far
Maha Mumbai Metro achieved its highest single-day ridership on July 8 as 3.01 lakh commuters availed the Metro services. This is the highest single-day passengers recorded till date since commencement of operations and marks a milestone in the Metro network, according to the officials. 'Our ridership is increasing by an average of 5% every month. This reflects the trust commuters have in our services. We remain committed to providing uninterrupted, safe, timely and environment-friendly service to the people of Mumbai,' said Dr Sanjay Mukherjee, Metropolitan Commissioner, Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) and Chairman Maha Mumbai Metro. The operational lines of the Maha Mumbai Metro are Line 2A (Dahisar East to DN Nagar) and Line 7 (Dahisar East to Gundavali), linking the western suburbs and providing an essential means of east-west and north-south travel. On the same day, Maha Mumbai Metro also made another record–usage of paperless tickets on WhatsApp. A total of 62,282 riders made use of the ticketing service based on WhatsApp, which the authority asserts is the maximum since the facility came into operation. Maha Mumbai Metro said that nearly 20% of its total ticket sales are conducted via WhatsApp, representing the highest in the country among Metro systems to be implemented on this platform. The WhatsApp ticketing feature provides passengers with the facility to reserve QR code-based tickets on their mobile phone directly, thus skipping queues and helping to reduce paper usage.
