MUHS launches company to boost research, innovation
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis was the chief guest at the launch function held recently at Nashik. When contacted, Lt Gen Madhuri Kanitkar (Retd), Vice Chancellor, MUHS told The Indian Express that it is being developed as a hub and spoke model to make the existing government medical colleges into thematic spokes of excellence in phases. 'The project has been provided autonomy through the state-supported CHAKRA,' Kanitkar added.
MUHS holds a distinguished position as a premier health university with a diverse range of affiliated health science colleges. The recently instituted Network of Centres of Excellence (COE) Policy, 2023 aligns with MUHS's commitment to drive healthcare standards to greater heights across Maharashtra.
The emphasis lies heavily on ensuring the highest standards of quality, accessibility, and comprehensive care and the establishment of a coordinated Network of COEs, as detailed in the policy, is expected to streamline efforts to achieve excellence in medical research, advanced education, and patient care.
According to Kanitkar, the focus will be on critical priority initiatives like a faculty development academy, digital health centre and clinical trials centre.
'In the first phase of the implementation roadmap, we have proposed a Maharashtra State Health Training Research Institute (MSHTRI). As part of this effort, a faculty development academy is an important initiative that will enhance the capabilities of educators, ensuring the continuous update of their knowledge base and utilization of latest and best-in-class teaching approaches,' Dr Kanitkar said. She added that in the first year she envisages at least 400 trained faculty.
A simulation lab is another state-of-the-art facility that integrates theoretical learning with its practical application, facilitating a realistic exposure to clinical scenarios for students. 'In the first year the aim is to train 1,000 students,' the Vice-Chancellor said.
While a digital learning studio is a contemporary initiative that focuses on integrating digital tools into the academic curriculum, offering a hybrid approach to medical education, the VC has also proposed an incubation centre. 'This is a dedicated hub for medical innovation, designed to foster research collaborations and facilitate the progression of innovative ideas into tangible healthcare solutions. This centre will aim to support healthcare start-ups and create entrepreneurial medical professionals. In the first year, the aim is to include 10 research projects in incubation and support 10 start-ups,' Dr Kanitkar said.
Apart from providing training in the latest digital health tools and technologies, setting up a Clinical Trials Centre will provide guidance on a standardised approach to clinical research, ensuring adherence to global best practices and fostering advancements in medical research.
'These priority initiatives have been identified through a combination of secondary research involving detailed desk review and primary research involving interactions and observations during field visits to renowned centres of teaching and research excellence,' the V-C added.

Statewide ‘Maha Smiles' Initiative to be Launched from Nagpur
Nagpur: A major state-level health initiative titled 'Maha Smiles – Cleft Awareness and Treatment Campaign' is set to launch from Nagpur on July 31, aiming to bring free surgical treatment and awareness for children born with cleft lips and palates, particularly in the underserved regions of Vidarbha. The initiative is being implemented in partnership with international NGO Smile Train India and Bajaj Finserv, under their corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts. It was initiated after chief minister Devendra Fadnavis appealed to corporate companies to work in this field. The campaign is not merely a medical drive but a transformative social movement expected to restore smiles and confidence to thousands of affected children. As part of the first phase, three specially equipped mobile vans will travel across all 11 districts of Vidarbha over the next 90 days, spreading awareness about cleft conditions, providing early diagnosis, and facilitating free registration for surgical intervention. Surgeries will be conducted at partner hospitals in Nagpur, Gondia, Akola, and Wardha. Cleft lip and palate are congenital conditions affecting approximately 1 in every 700 births, causing gaps in the upper lip and/or roof of the mouth. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Pirates Climb Aboard Cargo Ship - Watch What The Captain Did Next Tips and Tricks Undo Without timely treatment, children may face serious complications such as hearing loss, speech difficulties, malnutrition, and social isolation. However, with appropriate surgical care —often requiring multiple operations — children can go on to lead completely normal lives. Unfortunately, due to the high cost of treatment, many children from economically weaker sections remain untreated. This initiative will ensure entirely free surgeries for such families, removing financial barriers to care. Experts highlight that along with treatment, public awareness is critical to ensure early detection and timely medical help. 'Maha Smiles' is designed to bridge this gap, especially targeting rural and tribal communities, where lack of information often leads to delayed or no intervention. If we go by the ratio, then 60 per cent of funds should go to primary health services and 40 per cent to tertiary services," he said. If the primary health services are strengthened, then it lessens the load on tertiary services, because 60 to 70 per cent patients get treated for their diseases in the primary health segment, he pointed out. Live Events "The state government has prepared a plan to provide primary health services to every person within a 3-kilometre radius in urban and rural areas. We are developing a network of primary, secondary and tertiary health services. With the help of external aided agencies and the Union government, we will try to establish the best health services in the country in Maharashtra in the next four years," Fadnavis asserted. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari also addressed the event at Late Bhanutai Gadkari Memorial Diagnostic Centre, which is named after his mother. Gadkari emphasised that whatever he has achieved and has been able to do in life is because of the blessings and teachings of his mother. His mother always taught him to serve the poor, the Union minister of road transport and highways and local Lok Sabha MP told the gathering. This diagnostic centre will greatly help the needy and poor since services will be available at very affordable prices, Gadkari informed. "Through such social initiatives, I learnt that the meaning of politics is not just power politics. I always tell my colleagues that politics is an instrument for social and economic reforms in society," he said.
