Liverpool close in on Marc Guehi deal as transfer clause details come to light
Liverpool have been the Premier League's big spenders this summer, with Florian Wirtz one of the stars to move to Anfield, but Arne Slot's side are not done just yet Liverpool have made a very busy start to the summer but Arne Slot's side are far from done. They might have won the Premier League title last term, but now the time has come to build from a position of strength. Florian Wirtz is the marquee summer signing, while Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong have also been brought on board. Giorgi Mamardashvili's arrival was confirmed a full year ago, while we have also seen the Reds say goodbye to the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Caoimhin Kelleher as well as adding backup keeper Freddie Woodman. Next up is an additional centre-back. Jarell Quansah looks to be Leverkusen-bound, and Marc Guehi could be the man to replace him at Anfield. Liverpool aren't done selling players either, by the looks of it. Darwin Nunez is ready to leave after a difficult season on a personal level, though things aren't entirely straightforward when it comes to the Uruguayan's exit. We've got updates for you on some of those pending ins and outs as Slot looks to freshen up his squad. Here are Mirror Football 's latest lines from the red half of Merseyside. Liverpool close in on Guehi Liverpool are closing in on their next transfer target, with Marc Guehi on the verge of a move from Crystal Palace. The Eagles are expected to accept around £40m for the star, who is in the final year of his deal, after wanting around £70m last summer. The England intenational has been a key player for the Eagles since joining from Chelsea in 2021. He played his 150th game for Palace this season, and captained them to victory in the FA Cup final. Guehi, 24, has also increased his importance to the senior England team. He won his 23rd cap in March, playing the full 90 minutes as England beat Latvia in a World Cup qualifier. Chelsea to benefit from Reds deal It's not just Palace who will benefit financially from Guehi's move. Former club Chelsea are understood to have a 20 percent sell-on clause, which would net them £8m if Guehi moves for the anticipated £40m. Chelsea have already been busy this summer, signing the likes of Liam Delap and Dario Essugo. An extra windfall could go towards further signings after the Blues return from the Club World Cup. One of the players being eyed by Enzo Maresca's side is Jamie Gittens. Talks over a swoop for the Dortmund winger have continued despite Chelsea failing to get a deal done before the Club World Cup got underway. Nunez set for waiting game Darwin Nunez is ready to leave Liverpool but is likely to have to wait for an exit. This is because suitors Napoli are some way away from the Reds in their valuation of the Uruguayan. Liverpool want £70m for Nunez, who joined in a big-money move from Benfica in 2022. Napoli believe something closer to £50m is fair for a player who struggled for minutes at Anfield last season. Nunez started just eight league games for Liverpool last summer, with Luis Diaz often preferred in the number nine role. Napoli have money to spend after selling Khvicha Kvaratskhelia in January but aren't budging on the fee just yet.

Chelsea boss lashes out at Club World Cup organisers after yet another weather delay
CHARLOTTE, North Carolina, June 28 (Reuters) - Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca lashed out after a two-hour weather delay disrupted his team's last-16 Club World Cup victory over Benfica on Saturday, suggesting the United States was not a suitable country for the competition - a year before it is due to host the men's World Cup. Chelsea beat Benfica 4-1 in extra-time to qualify for the quarter-finals after a game that ended four hours and 39 minutes after kicking off, following a two-hour interruption due to a storm warning. It was the sixth time that a game was stopped at the 32-club tournament because of the risk of lightning. "For me personally, it's not football," Maresca told a press conference. "I think it's a joke. It's not football. "I can understand that for security reasons, you have to suspend the game. But if you suspend seven or eight games, that means that probably this is not the right place to do this competition. "It's a fantastic competition. It's the Club World Cup, all the best clubs are here," he added. "But six, seven games suspended? It's not normal. In a World Cup how many have they suspended? Probably zero. In a European (championship), how many games? Zero. There is some problem." FIFA, which organised the tournament, was not immediately available for comment. Chelsea were 1-0 up when the players were asked to leave the pitch and play only resumed almost two hours later. "The game was very good for 85 minutes, then we stopped for two hours, and when we started it was a completely different game. It's not the same game because you break the tempo," Maresca said.

Jurgen Klopp admits his true feelings on Arne Slot being successful at Liverpool
Arne Slot took on the daunting task of succeeding Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool and quickly silenced any doubters, winning the Premier League title in his first campaign Jurgen Klopp has revealed that he briefly wondered if he was actually happy watching Arne Slot take his Liverpool team and turn them into title winners. Slot, 46, has already lifted as many Premier League trophies in one season as Klopp did during his entire eight-and-a-half-year tenure, exceeding all expectations in his first 12 months at Anfield. The Reds were far from title favourites coming into the campaign but Slot's side barely put a foot wrong in the top flight to win the league at a canter. Klopp left a squad packed full of talent and experience for the Dutchman to inherit, having arrived Feyenoord with the daunting task of succeeding one of the biggest names in world football at one of its most successful clubs. There's still a long way to go for Slot to match Klopp's trophy haul and longevity, with the German considered one of the Reds' all-time greatest managers after leaving in May 2024. But there are already echoes of when Bob Paisley successfully took the reins from Bill Shankly, who built the foundations for Liverpool's golden era half a century ago. But how did Klopp feel watching Slot get off to a lightning-fast start with a team who'd finished third the previous season? "To be honest: when things started off so well under him, I briefly asked myself as a person whether I was happy that things were like this," the ex-Reds boss revealed to German newspaper Welt. "Yes, it's really good - it makes me happy." Klopp enjoys a good relationship with those at Liverpool, recently returning for an LFC Foundation event. "We're in very good contact - with some of the players who write now and then or send the occasional photo from their holidays," the 54-year-old continued. "The owners have become good friends. I've also written to Arne now and then; we've only seen each other once. He was pleased with my gesture back then." "I was recently back in Liverpool in my role as ambassador for the LFC Foundation, and it was nice to see everyone again. But I'm glad I don't have to be there every day anymore. My time in Liverpool was wonderful, but it's over. A colourful bouquet of memories - and 99 percent of them are good." Will Arne Slot eclipse Jurgen Klopp's legacy at Liverpool? Give us your prediction in the comments section. Klopp now works as Red Bull 's head of global football, overseeing the development of players and coaches at their stable of clubs. The German doesn't miss being on the touchline, affirming: "Red Bull didn't bring me in as a potential coach. "I'm supposed to pass on the experience I've gained as a head coach and manager, and I'm supposed to help younger colleagues develop. "We want to hire coaches for the right reasons and, if necessary, part ways with them for the right reasons. And for me, it's all about sporting development and not how it's perceived by the public.
