Tesco shoppers going wild over £16 chocolate cake that's ‘best they've ever had'
It's the simple things in life, right? The sun shining, a good hair day and your local supermarket launching a tempting new sweet treat.
And Tesco might have nailed it with its latest release.
The retailer has teamed up with Studio Bakery, a family-run bakery business from Lancashire, to start selling the brand's giant slices of cake inspired by a nostalgic favourite – you know, that one you always wanted to reach through the screen and smash your face into in Matilda.
The aptly named Matilda Cake, is a beast of a chocolate cake slice that claims to serve 10 and sees 12 layers of chocolate sponge and 12 layers of ganache stacked one on top of the other.
Priced at £16 for the slice, (which is meant to serve 10 people) the product can be found in Tesco's bigger stores, but not the Express ones.
On social media, shoppers have hailed it the 'best chocolate cake they've ever had', with Frankie French posting in the Food Finds UK Official group to say: 'Best chocolate cake I've ever tried, this Studio Bakery Big Matilda Cake. Can't wait to be able to buy it in Tesco.'
Connor James replied to say he thought it looked 'amazing' as Cerise Gant commented: 'Oh this will be lethal'
Paige Mitchell was also excited by the new product, writing: 'Oh my that will fulfil my pregnancy cravings.'
'I've tried it, it's delicious,' claimed Ashleigh Howard, and Simon Hodgson wasn't keen to share his, replying: 'Serves 10, who are they kidding?'
Others compared it to the Costco chocolate cake, the Ultimate Bruce cake from Kake Temptations and the iconic Bertha from Get Baked, a Manchester-based company that sells out slabs of its giant chocolate cake each week.
Having tried the Get Baked version, which costs £20 plus postage, I knew I had to see how this one compares.
My first impression is that it doesn't look as visually appealing as Bertha. The sponge looks dense and dry, and the ganache is lacking a shine.
But it's very much a case of appearances being deceiving as the Matilda cake is much moister than it looks.
It's rich, without being too sickly sweet, and oh so enjoyable with a cup of tea.
The box recommends heating it up, so that's what I did and I loved the flexibility of being able to enjoy this as both a piece of cake and a hot, molten chocolate pudding, depending on what you're in the mood for.
There's also a claim on the box that it serves 10, but I'd say you'd be cheating people out of cake if you stretched it that far. In the Metro office the slice was split between six of us and there were no leftovers. Make of that what you will… https://www.instagram.com/p/C_AqRXnIuYi/?hl=en&img_index=1
This cake is soooo much better than your average supermarket chocolate cake, there's no denying that. More Trending
But when it comes down to the wire, the overall quality is higher with the Get Baked product, in terms of the look, taste and even the packaging.
Yes, you're spending more, but you definitely get what you pay for in this situation. Bertha's sponge is fresh and moist, the ganache is silky smooth and glossy and it's wrapped carefully in tissue paper inside a visually striking box. In every way possible it feels like a premium product.
The Matilda Cake doesn't quite live up to that, but it's a close second.

This doesn't surprise me too much though, after all, it is being mass-produced for a supermarket, so it didn't really stand a chance.

Shoppers spot new flavour of chocolate Maltesers pouches on shelves with twist on festive favourite
CHOC SHOCK Shoppers spot new flavour of chocolate Maltesers pouches on shelves with twist on festive favourite Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) SHOPPERS have spotted a new flavour of Maltesers pouches on the shelves with a twist on a festive favourite. One user picked up dozens of likes and comments this week for her review of the treat on Instagram after finding a pack of five in a huge supermarket. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 The new flavour has not gone down well with one reviewer Several chocolate fans have posted photographs of Maltesers Mini Reindeers Gingerbread Flavour on social media. It comes just days after shoppers spotted White Chocolate Maltesers as part of the meal deal options at Asda. The Mini Reindeers snack is on sale in Asda for £1.80. They are currently out of stock at Tesco and not yet listed at Aldi or Lidl. Another_snack_reviewer described the new pouches as "milk chocolate with a gingerbread flavour malt filling and honeycombed pieces". They added: "Yes, I realise this is a Christmas product and yes I realise it's only July. But I've always said if it's on the shelves then I'm gonna buy it! "I'm a big fan of the reindeer/bunny range (white chocolates are obviously the best) so I was super excited to see a new flavour!" Foodies race to Iceland to get their hands on a giant Maltesers bubble bar that's perfect for a Christmas dessert The review continued: "Unfortunately these didn't quite do it for me. "While the malty, honeycomb flavour was there and the texture was the usual creamy yet crunchy one which I love, the gingerbread just wasn't strong enough against the other elements. "It did come through more in the aftertaste but I still would have preferred it to be a tad punchier." This prompted several responses from other users. One wrote: "Shame as I was so excited for the gingerbread flavour of these" while another wrote: "OMG Christmas food reviews in July? I kid I kid! "If they're selling it, you've gotta review it. "Very sad to hear they aren't that tasty though. I'll stick to my favourite reindeer, the mint one." 'Add the ginger!' Another posted: "Aww nooooo I was so hoping these would be full on gingerbread." A fourth user said: "Just add more ginger, don't know if its a cost saving or worried people would find them too gingery but seriously, people who don't like ginger aren't gonna buy them so people who will buy them clearly like ginger. Add the ginger!" One user lamented: "The saddest news I've heard all week. "Was so looking forward to these as well!" Maltesers' new white chocolate snacks are available at major retailers — but sweet lovers will need to act fast before they sell out. Originally aimed at "dieting women", White Chocolate Maltesers were the white-chocolate version of Maltesers. The key difference between them and the original was that, instead of being covered in milk chocolate, they were covered in a delicious white chocolate coating. Maltesers are round balls of malted milk covered in chocolate. They were launched in 1937 after being created by American Forrest Mars Sr. Maltesers were first released in the UK and were originally aimed at "dieting women" as a "lighter" way to enjoy chocolate. They have since become popular across Europe and in Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

I got kicked out of a wedding because of my ‘inappropriate' outfit… people say the ‘horrid' bride got married ‘for show'
FROCK OFF I got kicked out of a wedding because of my 'inappropriate' outfit… people say the 'horrid' bride got married 'for show' Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A MOTHER has revealed that she travelled two hours to a wedding, only to be kicked out because of her "inappropriate" outfit. The mum-of-two, who is from the US and is a Korean language student, explained that not long after arriving at the nuptials, she was confronted by the bride about the colour of her dress. 2 A mu has revealed that after driving two hours to her husband's friends' wedding, she was kicked out for her "inappropriate" dress Credit: tiktok/@ebrown_rn 2 Fuming with the situation, the nurse took to social media to explain all, leaving many open-mouthed Credit: tiktok/@ebrown_rn Fuming with the situation, Elisé Brown acknowledged that when talking to the bride, she was told there was a 'dress code' which her colourful frock didn't meet. Eager to alert others to the awkward ordeal, posting on social media, the content creator uploaded a clip with the caption 'Got kicked out of a wedding reception for being out of a dress code I didn't know existed!' As she filmed herself sitting in her car, the nurse said: 'So I am currently sitting in my car because I came two hours to a wedding for one of my husband's friends and we have been here a total of 15 minutes, and the bride comes up to me and tells me that my outfit is 'inappropriate' for her wedding. 'There was a supposed dress code that I didn't know existed because I never got a wedding invitation mailed to my house - it was a text message that my husband received.' With intentions to celebrate the couple saying 'I Do' in style, Elisé wore a colourful dress containing dark blue, light blue, pale pink and white. But the irritated woman later confirmed that since leaving the wedding, she was informed that the dress code was 'navy, yellow, maroon or grey.' Elisé acknowledged that she had never met the bride prior to the big day, but did know the groom, as he had been friends with her husband for 20 years. She later confirmed that the bride didn't bother to greet her or formally introduce herself prior to their conversation, but was clearly not impressed with her outfit choice. After the embarrassing conversation with the 'rude' bride, Elisé 'walked out' of the wedding and headed back to her car. Clearly fuming, Elisé added: 'But in 2025, is this what brides do to their guests now? You walk up to your guests and tell them that the outfit they're wearing is not appropriate for their wedding?' I'm 5ft3 & a size 12-14 - my 7 Tesco dresses are an absolute bargain & perfect for a last-minute wedding guest outfit Stunned by the situation, the shocked mother then shared: 'I didn't know that was a thing. I mean, I've been married for 11 years. 'This is what we do to our guests? I'm kind of disappointed and I'm really ready to go home.' Social media users react The TikTok clip, which was posted under the username @ebrown_rn, has clearly left many open-mouthed, as it has quickly gone viral and racked up 2.7 million views, 106,300 likes and 8,462 comments. But social media users were gobsmacked by the situation and many hailed the bride as 'horrid' and claimed she only got married 'for show.' If a bride is roaming around and taking time to be rude to guests, she's got issues TikTok user One person said: 'That ain't a wedding, that's a funeral of a friendship.' Another added: 'I think dress codes at weddings are horrid. Weddings have gotten out of control.' A third commented: 'If a bride is roaming around and taking time to be rude to guests, she's got issues that you don't need to think about twice.' Wedding Guest Outfit Etiquette If you're struggling to decided on a dress to see you through wedding season, here's a few rules on what not to wear so you don't get in trouble. Folklore says that wearing red at a wedding means you slept with the groom. Casual attire like jeans and flip flops should always be avoided. Any colour that could be picked up as white or cream - even if it's not. Most would agree that your cleavage needs to be covered. Wearing white is a massive no-no if you're not the bride. At the same time, someone else wrote: 'Apparently she got married for show, so that will last long and happy.' Not only this, but one user was gobsmacked and questioned: 'What??? You look fantastic!!! That's crazy!' Whilst another user sighed: 'That's very rude. I'm sorry that happened to you.' Meanwhile, one woman asked: 'And did you take your gift back with you?' To this, the woman confirmed: 'I didn't; it was only a $25 gift card. I literally walked out so quickly after her comment. I was HEATED.'
