Police investigate mastermind behind alleged haj package scam
Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department acting director Datuk Seri Muhammed Hasbullah Ali said an investigation paper had been opened under Section 420 of the Penal Code following three reports lodged by the victim's next of kin, two in Mantin, Negeri Sembilan and one in Ayer Hitam, Johor.
"It is too early to confirm a cross-border fraud. We are gathering statements and evidence to determine whether the syndicate is operating with certain agents or not.
"We are waiting for the victims to return to record their statements and take further action," he said in a statement on Sunday (June 15).
Muhammed Hasbullah said the police would also work with the Companies Commission of Malaysia, Lembaga Tabung Haji and the Tourism, Arts, and Culture Ministry to blacklist companies offering haj packages without approval, stressing that they are committed to taking firm action against those involved in such scams to protect the people from becoming victims.
At the same time, Muhammed Hasbullah expressed his appreciation for the media's cooperation in helping to disseminate information and raise public awareness that only individuals with an official haj visa are to perform the pilgrimage.
On Saturday (June 14), a media report cited that 47 Malaysian pilgrims had allegedly fallen victim to a haj scam by a local agent involving a well-known religious figure.
The daughter of one of the victims, who claimed that her parents and aunt, who left for Saudi Arabia with the agent on May 9, were forced to trek through dangerous routes from Jeddah to Makkah without proper documents, food, or water, allegedly to avoid detection by Saudi authorities.
The group of pilgrims also claimed that they were locked in a dark, cramped room and were told to pay an additional RM9,000 to retrieve belongings they had left behind, despite already having paid RM30,000 for the haj package. – Bernama

University lecturer falls victim to two online scams, loses over RM170,000
KUALA TERENGGANU: A senior university lecturer fell victim to two separate scams just days apart — one involving a cryptocurrency investment and the other a parcel scam. Kuala Terengganu district police chief Assistant Commissioner Azli Mohd Noor said the 54-year-old man lost RM162,170 in the cryptocurrency scam and another RM10,000 in the parcel scam. According to him, in the cryptocurrency case, the victim became acquainted with a woman from Hong Kong on a social media app on July 15. She introduced and explained cryptocurrency investments to him. "On July 19, the victim expressed interest and registered with the 'cryptoproe' investment platform. "Between July 19 and 25, he made five transactions from his Luno account to the cryptoproe platform, totalling RM162,170. "The victim only realised he had been scammed when he was unable to withdraw his 'coin' profits from the platform and was instead asked to invest more funds by the syndicate," he said. Azli added that the victim used his savings for the investment. The man filed a police report at 5.07pm yesterday. In the second case, on July 27 at about 7.15am at his residence, the victim said he met someone named Elizabeth on the same social media app and developed an online romantic relationship. He then provided her with his home address so she could send a parcel to Malaysia. "However, someone claiming to be from a courier company contacted the victim, asking for RM4,000 in delivery fees. They also claimed that customs had found cash in the parcel addressed to him. "To resolve the matter, the victim was instructed to pay RM8,500, but he was only able to pay RM6,000 to get the parcel released," Azli explained. He added that when the victim attempted to pay the remaining RM2,500 at an ATM in the city, the transaction failed. Upon checking with the bank's anti-scam unit, it was confirmed that the recipient's account had been flagged for fraudulent activity. Only then did the victim realise he had been deceived, resulting in a total loss of RM10,000 — all from his savings. "The victim filed a second police report at the Kuala Terengganu police station around 3.12pm yesterday. Both cases are being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating," he said.

Policeman injured after man goes on rampage with parang
KUANTAN: A policeman was injured after being attacked with a machete by a man believed to be mentally unstable at a house in Felda Bukit Kuantan yesterday. Corporal Mohd Shafril Izzwan Ismail, 37, suffered injuries to his back, chin and fingers on his left hand. Pahang police chief Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman said the incident occurred around 5.30pm after three policemen from the Panching police station responded to a report of a man going on a rampage with a machete. Upon arrival, they attempted to calm the man. "However, he became aggressive and slashed the victim with the machete," Yahaya said in a statement. A team from the Kuantan police headquarters' Criminal Investigation Division was later deployed and arrested the suspect. Mohd Shafril Izzwan was taken to Hospital Tengku Ampuan Afzan (HTAA) for treatment. Yahaya said police also seized a machete and two other sharp weapons. Initial checks showed the 37-year-old suspect had no prior criminal record and was unemployed. He has been referred to HTAA's psychiatric ward for mental health evaluation. The case is being investigated under Section 324 of the Penal Code for causing injury with a weapon.

Police corporal injured in machete attack by mentally unstable man in Felda Bukit Kuantan
KUANTAN: A police corporal sustained injuries after being attacked with a machete by a man suspected to be mentally unstable at a residence in Felda Bukit Kuantan. The incident occurred yesterday around 5.30 pm when authorities responded to reports of a man wielding a machete inside a home. Pahang police chief Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman confirmed that Cpl Mohd Shafril Izzwan Ismail, 37, from the Panching police station, suffered wounds to his back, chin, and left fingers. 'While attempting to de-escalate the situation, Mohd Shafril was suddenly attacked by the suspect. He was promptly taken to Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital and is currently receiving treatment in the Yellow Zone,' Yahaya stated. Police apprehended the 37-year-old unemployed suspect, who is believed to have mental health issues, and confiscated multiple sharp weapons from the scene. 'The suspect has been referred to the psychiatric ward for further evaluation,' Yahaya added. Investigations revealed the suspect has no prior criminal record.
