Over 46,000 petitions received in 10 days under the Ungaludan Stalin scheme in Salem, says District Collector
The Collector inspected the special camp under the Ungaludan Stalin scheme held at a marriage hall at Pethanaickenpalayam town panchayat on Tuesday. The Collector told reporters the special camps (168 in urban and 432 in rural areas) will be held till November in the district.
In these camps, services demanded by the people based on their petitions submitted will be fulfilled by the departments concerned within 45 days. A total of 46,705 petitions were received in the special camps held between July 15 and July 25, including 26,005 petitions seeking monthly assistance under Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai and 20,700 petitions related to other department services, Ms. Brindha Devi added.
The Collector said that camps were conducted in Old Suramangalam, Chinna Pudur, Edanganasalai, Mallur, Pethanaickenpalayam, and Kootathupatti in the district and proper arrangements were ensured.
During the inspection, the Collector issued an order for change in name in the power connection. Officials from departments concerned were also present during the inspection.

Increase monthly honorarium to ₹15,000, say panchayat-level SHG confederation animators
The panchayat-level self-help groups confederation animators have appealed to the Tamil Nadu Government to increase their monthly honorarium to ₹15,000. In a petition submitted to Collector R. Sukumar on Monday during the weekly grievances redressal meet, they said the panchayat-level confederations for coordinating the self-help groups in the rural local bodies had been formed in the district with over 300 animator managing it. The animators, maintaining the records and the accounts of the federation, were getting honorarium of ₹5,000 a month from the interest accrued in confederation savings. However, the recent communique from the Additional Director of Tamil Nadu Women Development Corporation to the Project Manager, 'Mahalir Thittam', had fixed the honorarium between ₹1,500 and ₹3,000 based on the quantum of savings made by each confederation. 'Even though we are maintaining 16 records and 10 accounts and managing other special programmes including Chief Minister's Breakfast Scheme and 'Ungaludan Stalin' programmes, the proposal to cut down the honorarium is something agonising. Instead, it should be increased to ₹15,000 a month. Hence, the communication from the Assistant Director of Tamil Nadu Women Development Corporation should be cancelled. Moreover, the animators, who have 15 years of service, should be appointed in vacancies in the panchayat unions as clerks', they said. On behalf of the Tirunelveli District Private Schools' Association, a petition was submitted seeking the early release of funds for students admission made under the Right to Education Scheme. The petitioner schools said the tuition fee to be paid by the government for the students admitted under the Right to Education programme for the academic years 2023 – 2024 and 2024 – 2025 in the private nursery, primary and matriculation schools was yet to be released. Since the arrears to be released by the government was exerting pressure on the schools, the government should release the funds immediately, the petitioners said. Seeking patta for their houses built under the tsunami victims rehabilitation programme at Thillaivanathoppu under Vijayapathi panchayat near Koodankulam in the district, 65 families submitted a petition to the Collector. A group of Social Democratic Party of India cadre submitted a petition against the shifting of the beedi workers' hospital from Melapalayam to Palayamkottai. They also demanded sustained steps by the Corporation to control stray dog menace.

He was 81. Soren was admitted to a hospital in New Delhi for more than a month and was undergoing treatment for kidney-related ailments. Soren was the founder of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha and the party's chief for 38 years. He served as the chief minister for 10 days in March 2005, for five months between August 2008 and January 2009, and between December 2009 and May 2010. Read more. The Supreme Court questioned the 'tearing hurry' of the Uttar Pradesh government in passing an ordinance that allows it to take over the management of the Banke Bihari temple in Vrindavan. A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi expressed disapproval of the 'clandestine manner' in which the government had secured permission to use temple funds for a Rs 500-crore corridor project. The permission was secured through a May 15 judgement of the Supreme Court, which allowed the state to acquire five acres of land with temple funds. The bench verbally proposed recalling the May 15 verdict and forming a committee, headed by a retired High Court judge, to oversee the temple's management while the validity of the ordinance was being decided. The Tamil Nadu government moved the Supreme Court challenging a Madras High Court order restraining it from naming welfare schemes after living politicians and using the photographs of former chief ministers, ideological leaders and political party symbols in advertisements of the schemes. The petitioner had argued that the practice violated the Supreme Court's earlier directions and the 2014 Government Advertisement Content Regulation Guidelines. The High Court had referred to a Supreme Court ruling that allowed the use of the current chief minister's photo in government advertisements, but ruled that including former leaders or party icons could be seen as political misuse of public funds.

Contempt Plea By AIADMK Against 'Stalin-Named' Scheme, DMK Approaches Top Court
Chennai: AIADMK MP and former minister C Ve Shanmugam has filed a contempt petition in the Madras High Court against the Tamil Nadu Health Secretary and the Public Department Secretary, alleging violation of a court order by continuing to use Chief Minister MK Stalin's name in a new government health outreach programme. In the run-up to the 2026 assembly elections, the state government recently launched the "Nalam Kaakkum Stalin" (Wellness Ensuring Stalin) initiative, despite a High Court interim order last week barring the use of names of living political personalities in government schemes. The order also prohibited the use of photographs of former Chief Ministers or ideological leaders in publicity material. The court, however, allowed the use of the incumbent Chief Minister's photograph, citing a Supreme Court ruling. The DMK government had earlier named two flagship schemes -Ungaludan Stalin (Stalin With You) and Nalam Kaakkum Stalin - after the Chief Minister, featuring visuals of both MK Stalin and late DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi in outreach campaigns. These schemes are part of a broader public service drive with elections just eight months away. Today, the Madras High Court adjourned the hearing on the state's plea to continue using the existing scheme names to August 7, after the Tamil Nadu government moved the Supreme Court challenging the interim order. The top court is expected to hear the case on August 6. In its plea before the High Court, the state argued that the Chief Minister is a constitutional functionary, not merely a political personality, and that the Supreme Court did not explicitly ban the use of former Chief Ministers' photographs. DMK sources point out that during J Jayalalithaa's government, the AIADMK had named schemes after "Amma", the name she was fondly called by her cadre. After her death, her picture, they say, was part of AIADMK's publicity material. The BJP at the centre too has a programme named NaMo, an acronym for Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The contempt plea and the state's challenge are now poised for crucial hearings next week, potentially setting a precedent for the naming and promotion of government schemes in Tamil Nadu.
