BJP MP Nishikant Dubey cites Himalayan 'CIA operation', claims Nehru surrendered to US
NEW DELHI: As Parliament's monsoon session approaches, the stage seems to be getting set for a BJP-Congress duel over "foreign interference", with BJP MP Nishikant Dubey circulating documents about Jawaharlal Nehru govt's decision to let US's Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) install "two nuclear-powered devices" high in the Himalayas to monitor Chinese preparations for nuclear tests.
In a post of X, Dubey attached a copy of an April 1978 letter from members of the US Congress addressed to the then US president Jimmy Carter. The letter expressed concern about a "CIA operation" in India in the 1960s, which the US foreign intelligence agency apparently carried out without keeping Indian government in the loop.
The letter cited an 'Outside' article, published by Rolling Stone. According to author Howard Kohn there were "two nuclear-powered monitoring devices", allegedly for surveillance of Chinese atomic weapons testing, high in the Himalayas.
The devices, containing plutonium, were placed on two mountains, one of which, Nanda Devi, is the source of India's Ganges River, the holy river for millions of Hindus, the letter stated. The then Congress government's decision to let CIA surveil on China's plans for nuclear tests has long been an open secret in many quarters. So was the unsuccessful effort to retrieve one of the monitoring devices, which was buried by an avalanche, by sending expeditions.

But BJP's decision to ignite a fresh debate at this juncture is significant because of indications that Congress may double up on its allegation that US president Donald Trump coerced Modi government into agreeing to pause Operation Sindoor.
Dubey linked Nehru government's decision and disapparance of the devices to natural calamities by citing the article which said the untraceable device could be "leaking plutonium into the Ganges.
If this is true, it would be a serious problem, indeed".
Sharing the letter, Dubey asked whether Kedarnath disaster, Teesta River flooding, melting glaciers in Gangotri and Yamunotri, and even decreasing water level of Ganga could be linked to this incident.
"The Nehru-Gandhi family bowed before America. Rahul Gandhi ji, Congress is responsible for the destruction of farmers and played with India's faith..." Dubey posted on X.

Sambhaji Brigade's Pravindada Gaikwad refuses govt security after his face blackened, BJP promises action against attacker
The Maharashtra BJP on Tuesday said it would soon take action against Deepak Kate, the party worker who allegedly attacked Pravindada Gaikwad, chief of Sambhaji Brigade's political wing, even as he asserted that the ruling party had orchestrated the attack, and refused any government security. 'We have strongly condemned the attack on Gaikwad. There is no room for such things in our party. The process to take action in the matter is underway. Soon the party will announce the decision,' BJP spokesperson Keshav Upadhye said. 'There is no question of shielding any accused, whoever he may be.' Activists of the Shivdharma Foundation smeared black oil on the Maratha leader's face in an attack allegedly led by Kate in Solapur on Sunday. Speaking to The Indian Express, Gaikwad said, 'The government has actually not offered any security to me. I don't think they will provide me security. But I have already conveyed the message that I don't want any security cover. The bahujan samaj is there to protect me from the wrongdoers.' Gaikwad said, 'Why would the government want to provide me security? Its own people are attacking me and want to kill me. And now the government is indulging in the drama of providing me security. I can live without security. My people will decide whether I should live or die. I have devoted my life to the welfare of the people. They will take care of me.' Gaikwad said Deepak Kate had phoned him up twice before the attack. 'He said we should change the name of our organisation from Sambhaji Brigade to Chhatrapati Sambhaji Brigade. I told him that there was technical difficulty in it as the name has already been registered by another organisation. Also, it does not mean that we have any disrespect for Sambhaji Maharaj. Sambhaji Brigade has produced a serial on the warrior king and has also published several books on him,'' he said. Gaikwad said the real reason behind the attack was something else and referred to an incident where the RSS headquarters in Nagpur was gheraoed by two lakh people belonging to the All India Backward and Minority Communities Employees Federation (BAMCEF), established by Kanshi Ram and others. 'The Sangh Parivar had then planned to finish off BAMCEF. Similarly, they want to do away with organisations like Sambhaji Brigade and Maratha Seva Sangh. All these organisations share similar ideologies. The Sangh Parivar does not want any of our ideologies to thrive,' he said. The BJP, however, denied that the Sangh Parivar had made any such plan. 'There is no truth in the allegations being made,' said Upadhaye. Gaikwad said, 'In a video of BJP leader Chandrashekhar Bawankule, which has gone viral, he is heard saying that Kate is not guilty. Actually, there are 10 serious criminal cases against Kate. He also has a murder charge against him. Yet, Bawankule is heard saying that Kate should not worry and that he and the chief minister are behind him. His speeches on social media are proof of how he is supporting the attacker… All these things highlight the attack on me was orchestrated by the BJP.' Gaikwad also denied he had made any comment against Swami Samarth. 'My own daughter-in-law is a follower of Swami Samarth…I have never said anything against Swami Samarth,' he said. He has also written aggressively on local gondaism. He has primarily written civic stories from Pimpri-Chinchwad, Khadki, Maval and some parts of Pune. He has also covered stories from Kolhapur, Satara, Solapur, Sangli, Ahmednagar and Latur. He has had maximum impact stories from Pimpri-Chinchwad industrial city which he has covered extensively for the last three decades. Manoj More has written over 20,000 stories. 10,000 of which are byline stories. Most of the stories pertain to civic issues and political ones. The biggest achievement of his career is getting a nearly two kilometre road done on Pune-Mumbai highway in Khadki in 2006. He wrote stories on the state of roads since 1997. In 10 years, nearly 200 two-wheeler riders had died in accidents due to the pathetic state of the road. The local cantonment board could not get the road redone as it lacked funds. The then PMC commissioner Pravin Pardeshi took the initiative, went out of his way and made the Khadki road by spending Rs 23 crore from JNNURM Funds. In the next 10 years after the road was made by the PMC, less than 10 citizens had died, effectively saving more than 100 lives. Manoj More's campaign against tree cutting on Pune-Mumbai highway in 1999 and Pune-Nashik highway in 2004 saved 2000 trees. During Covid, over 50 doctors were asked to pay Rs 30 lakh each for getting a job with PCMC. The PCMC administration alerted Manoj More who did a story on the subject, asking then corporators how much money they story worked as doctors got the job without paying a single paisa. Manoj More has also covered the "Latur drought" situation in 2015 when a "Latur water train" created quite a buzz in Maharashtra. He also covered the Malin tragedy where over 150 villagers had died. Migrant detentions rekindle Bengali identity politics, trigger new churn ahead of 2026 Bengal polls
The Mamata Banerjee-led TMC is going all guns blazing to turn what was once a socio-economic crisis into an emotive electoral issue, accusing BJP governments in Odisha, Assam, Delhi, Maharashtra, and Gujarat of 'institutional and linguistic profiling' and 'criminalisation of poverty' under guise of national security. With months to go for the 2026 Assembly polls, what began as isolated complaints of harassment of migrant workers has now evolved into a full-blown political flashpoint. Kolkata, Jul 15 (PTI) The detention of Bengali-speaking migrant labourers in BJP-ruled states and their profiling as suspected Bangladeshis has ignited a fresh political firestorm in West Bengal, with the ruling TMC reigniting its Bengali identity pitch that had blunted the BJP's Hindutva juggernaut in the 2021 Assembly polls. From branding the crackdown as a 'humiliation of Bengalis' to planning massive protest rallies in Kolkata, including a July 16 march to be led by Banerjee herself, the TMC is rekindling the sub-nationalist fervour it used to great effect in 2021 through the slogan 'Bangla Nijer Meyeke Chaye' (Bengal wants its own daughter). The flashpoint first emerged in June, when at least seven Bengali-speaking people were pushed back to Bangladesh from Maharashtra and other states, allegedly without proper citizenship verification or intimation to the West Bengal government. They were later repatriated through legal and diplomatic intervention after their Indian citizenship was confirmed. Last week, Odisha Police detained 444 workers from various Bengal districts on suspicion of being illegal immigrants, though 50 were later released after submitting documents. In Delhi, electricity and water supply were snapped in Bengali-dominated Jai Hind Colony, following a civil court order amid allegations of power theft, adding further fuel to the fire. 'There are over 1.5 crore migrant workers in Bengal who live with dignity. But the same cannot be said for BJP-ruled states, where Bengalis are being treated as infiltrators in their own country. Speaking Bengali does not make one Bangladeshi,' said TMC MP Samirul Islam. 'Harassment of Bengali workers is proof that this is part of a pattern of hatred towards Bengali-speaking people. Do these migrant labourers now need separate visas to visit BJP-ruled states?' Islam told PTI. The Bengal government is now exploring legal options against what it calls the 'unconstitutional deportation' of Indian citizens. Seizing the moment, the TMC has pivoted its campaign narrative to champion the rights and dignity of Bengali-speaking migrant labourers, an estimated 22.5 lakh of whom work across in construction, brick kilns, factories, and informal sectors across the country. 'Our people are being treated like infiltrators just because they are poor and speak Bengali,' said senior TMC leader Firhad Hakim. TMC minister Manas Bhunia said, 'These inhumane acts against Bengali workers reflect BJP's deep-rooted hatred for Bengalis. People of Bengal will give a befitting reply to this insult in the coming elections.' Sociologist Supriya Basu called the developments part of an effort to 'impose North Indian Hindutva culture on Bengal.' 'The BJP is attempting to set up colonies of Uttar Pradesh-style Hindutva in Bengal. Targeting migrants over language is just one manifestation of that push.' 'The large migrant population could have been an administrative liability, highlighting Bengal's job crisis. But BJP's aggressive profiling has flipped the narrative in TMC's favour.' The BJP has countered TMC's allegations by citing national security and illegal immigration concerns. BJP's IT cell chief Amit Malviya claimed over 300 of the 444 detained in Odisha had 'fake or unverifiable' documents. Newly appointed Bengal BJP chief Samik Bhattacharya went a step further, alleging a deliberate TMC-backed infiltration plan. 'These people work in other states and return to Bengal to vote for Mamata Banerjee. This is a demographic and national security threat,' he said. 'Instead of protecting Indian citizens, the TMC is shielding infiltrators and playing the victimhood card,' said BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari. While the Congress and CPI(M) have condemned the harassment and arbitrary arrests, they have carefully distanced themselves from TMC's more emotive 'Bengali vs outsider' pitch. 'Migrants labour rights are non-negotiable. But TMC's rhetoric is aimed at deflecting from its own governance failures,' CPI(M) leader Sujan Chakraborty said. Political analyst Suman Bhattacharya summed it up, 'In Bengal, pride often trumps policy. Banerjee knows how to tap into that. TMC, which was being cornered on multiple fronts, has now found a potent counter-narrative through this migrant issue.' Political scientist Maidul Islam predicted this would become a major political flashpoint in 2026 polls. After its 2021 triumph, the TMC had tried to rebrand itself as a national party with pan-Indian ambitions, toning down the sub-nationalist plank and inducting non-Bengali MPs like Shatrughan Sinha, Kirti Azad, and Yusuf Pathan. But with Assembly polls looming and the Hindutva narrative gaining steam, the party appears to be returning to its strongest emotional card — Bengali pride. Whether the next election will replicate the 'Bengali versus outsider' wave of 2021 or produce a more fractured verdict depends on how each party can sustain its competing narratives. Taiwan Shuts Down Key Bridge For Military Drill To Stop Chinese Forces From Entering Taipei
TAIPEI: Taiwan's Armed Forces shut a key bridge in Greater Taipei on Tuesday for a military drill, simulating Taipei's effort to stop Chinese forces from moving towards the capital city, Central News Agency (CNA) reported. The Wanban Bridge, which links New Taipei's Banqiao District to Taipei's Wanhua District, was entirely shut down from 11 pm (local time) on Monday to 6 am (local time) on Tuesday to facilitate the drill. Troops constructed a four-tier blockade on the 690-meter span within two hours, demonstrating Taiwan's rapid response capability against potential Chinese ground incursions. The blockade combined military fortifications with civilian resources, layered roadblocks, barbed wire, city buses, and newly acquired Hesco bastions, modern wire mesh barriers used in war zones like Iraq and Afghanistan. The exercise simulated a People's Liberation Army (PLA) attempt to breach the bridge using disguised military vehicles, a plausible "gray zone" tactic often employed by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) to blur the line between war and peace. Early this morning, the ROCMP simulated the defense of Wanban Bridge, which connects Taipei's government center to New Taipei City. The bridge was barricaded and defended using anti-tank equipment, including Javelin missile systems. Source & MND/MNA — Taiwan Security Monitor (@TaiwanMonitor) July 14, 2025 Military police deployed drones to detect the simulated enemy before engaging in a defensive firefight. In the scenario, PLA units broke through three of the four barricade layers before being neutralised by Taiwanese snipers and armoured "Clouded Leopard" vehicles. The operation concluded with full bridge clearance and spot checks. Taiwan's Ministry of National Defence emphasised that the drill is part of a broader campaign to strengthen urban warfare readiness and prevent enemy advances toward critical government and infrastructure hubs like the Presidential Office Building. Tuesday marked the seventh day of Taiwan's longest-ever live-fire phase of the Han Kuang exercises, which run through July 18. This year's extended duration, double that of previous drills, underscores Taiwan's growing sense of urgency amid China's escalating military coercion. The bridge drill served as both training and deterrent, a reminder to Beijing that Taiwan's defences are vigilant, resilient, and prepared to fight for their freedom.
