Alabama must get big season from this player to return to College Football Playoff: expert
Alabama football coach Kalen DeBoer is hoping for a better Year 2 than his debut season in Tuscaloosa.
Not that Alabama couldn't have done far worse than a 9-3 regular season that included a thrilling win over Georgia, a blowout victory at LSU, and a fifth straight Iron Bowl win over Auburn. Those and six other victories aren't bad for any new coach to have on his résumé.
But it's still Alabama, where high expectations will always be part of the job for any coach (historically, some have understood this better than others). For DeBoer to improve on last year's mark, a trip to the 12-team College Football Playoff is a must.
On Thursday, CBS Sports looked at the biggest X-factors for 12 prime College Football Playoff hopefuls. In Alabama's case, analyst Carter Bahns highlighted linebacker Qua Russaw as the player he views as poised to "make or break" the Tide's playoff hopes in 2025.
Per Bahns:
"The Alabama defense lost some of its identity last season as the pass rushing scheme lacked explosiveness and did not feature the superstar-caliber edge rushers that were cornerstones of the roster under Nick Saban. Someone needs to take a step forward in 2025 for the Crimson Tide to be more than just a mid-tier defensive front. Enter Qua Russaw, who cut his teeth as a redshirt freshman and should be the top option at the "wolf" position in Year 3. He managed just one sack a year ago, and Alabama needs more from the former No. 64 overall recruit."
Russaw committed to Nick Saban as a five-star player from Montgomery's Carver High School in 2022. As a redshirt freshman a season ago, he played in 13 games and made six starts while totaling 36 tackles (2.5 for loss) to go with two interceptions.
DeBoer has a talented roster heading into 2025, and it's apparent everywhere you look. PFF (Pro Football Focus) ranked the Tide's offensive line as the best in the nation, while the secondary was ranked No. 2 behind Texas. The wide receivers room, led by sophomore Ryan Williams and senior Germie Bernard, was recently ranked by CBS Sports as the third-best unit.
That talent will have to carry Alabama back to the College Football Playoff for the season to be considered a success.
Alabama opens the 2025 season against Florida State at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee on Aug. 30. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. CT. The game will be televised on ABC.

EA Sports Unveils Top 25 Rankings For 'College Football 26'

EA Sports Unveils Top 25 Rankings For 'College Football 26' originally appeared on The Spun. EA Sports won't release "College Football 26" until the early stages of July, but the game's top 25 has been released. Advertisement The way-too-early rankings from ESPN have Ohio State and Texas as the top two teams in the country. The Buckeyes lost a lot of talent from their championship-winning roster, but Jeremiah Smith and Caleb Downs will still be in Columbus anchoring down both sides of the football. The Longhorns, meanwhile, are finally handing the keys to their offense over to former five-star quarterback Arch Manning. Fans are expecting a big year from Eli and Peyton's nephew. Despite all the hype surrounding Ohio State and Texas, neither team received the top spot in EA Sports' rankings. The No. 1 spot surprisingly belongs to Alabama. Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith in "College Football 26."EA Sports. What's bizarre about Alabama being No. 1 is the offense doesn't have a starting quarterback yet. Sure, Ryan Williams is an absolute stud at wide receiver, but head coach Kalen DeBoer has some things to fix. Kentucky's Luke Coyle comes from behind to win 2025 Southeastern Amateur in playoff

There has been a lot of change for Luke Coyle in the last couple months. There has also been a lot of winning. Last month, the junior transferred to Kentucky after two seasons at Alabama. Perhaps the change of scenery was a jolt for Coyle heading into the amateur circuit this summer because he has been stellar in June. Coyle won the 96th Southeastern Amateur on Saturday at The Country Club of Columbus in Columbus, Georgia, shooting 4-under 66 in the final round to finish at 9-under 201 for the tournament. His performance Saturday helped him get into a playoff with Richmond sophomore Carson Baez. Coyle birdied the first playoff hole while Baez made par, giving him the title at one of the oldest amateur events in the country. Earlier this month, Coyle won the Dogwood Invitational by six strokes at Druid Hills about 90 minutes-drive away in Atlanta. On Saturday, Coyle came from four strokes behind to get into the playoff. His 66 tied for the lowest score in the final round. In the opening round Thursday, Coyle reached 4 under after 10 holes but played his final eight in 5 over, signing for 71. His Friday round featured six birdies and no bogeys, and on Saturday, he had seven birdies and overcame a double on the par-4 15th hole thanks to a birdie on the par-5 17th, to get into the playoff before picking up the victory.

Social media reacts to Alabama players signing undrafted NBA free agent deals

Over the course of this past Wednesday and Thursday night, the Alabama Crimson Tide did not see any of their four draft-eligible players selected in the two rounds of the 2025 NBA draft. Yes, throughout both the first-and-second rounds, none of Alabama's four draft-eligible prospects - Mark Sears, Grant Nelson, Clifford Omoruyi, and Chris Youngblood - heard their names called, and instead entered undrafted free agency late Friday night. Since, it has not taken those four Alabama players long to find a new home at the professional level either, as all have signed an undrafted free agent deal as of Friday, June 27. Let's take a look at some reactions on social media to Alabama's draft prospects landing with NBA teams on free agent deals.
