Five suspects have been charged over an attack on a white couple at a jazz festival in Cincinnati. Violent footage showing a man and woman being beaten by a group of people in the Ohio city on Saturday went viral on social media over the weekend, prompting condemnation from figures including Vice-President JD Vance. On Monday, police charged five suspects over the attack, but did not release their names. They said they expected to bring more charges and are in contact with the victims. Harmeet Dhillon, a senior figure in the US justice department, suggested the attack on the white couple may have been motivated by race, and that suspects could also be charged with federal hate crimes. He is later helped to his feet by bystanders in the crowd. Another clip, apparently later in the altercation, shows a woman being punched in the face by a man and collapsing on the street. Teresa Theetge, the Cincinnati police chief, said five people were charged on Monday at the mass brawl of '100 or so' people in the city's downtown around 3am on Saturday. 'Anyone who put their hands on another individual during this incident in an attempt to cause harm will face consequences... that's unacceptable,' she said. 'I don't care which side of the incident or the fight they were on.' The investigation remains open and police anticipate that more suspects will be charged, she added. 'Our federal hate crimes laws apply to ALL Americans,' Ms Dhillon, the US assistant attorney general for civil rights, said on Sunday. 'Nobody in our great nation should be the victim of such a crime, and where race is a motivation, federal law may apply.' Both victims appear to be white, according to footage of the attack. One witness told local media the incident had been sparked off by 'racial comments', but this has not been confirmed. Mr Vance, a former Ohio senator, accused authorities in 'big cities' of allowing 'lawless thugs... to run wild' in a visit to the state on Monday. 'We have got to make great American cities safe again for families and children,' he said. 'Where I come from at least, when you have a grown man who sucker punches a middle-aged woman, that person ought to go to jail for a very long time.' Corey Bowman, a Republican candidate for Cincinnati mayor and Mr Vance's half-brother, said police were being hamstrung because soft-on-crime city prosecutors released criminals onto the streets. 'Many of these officers don't even book people because they know they're just going to be back on the street next week... They have a heart for the city, but they're being hindered by the policies that are in place,' he told Fox News. The Cincinnati mayor's office has been approached for comment. Police looking for five suspects charged in viral Cincinnati brawl
Police are searching for five people charged in connection with a brawl in Cincinnati after footage of the incident went viral and prompted reaction by US Vice-President JD Vance and Elon Musk. Cincinnati Police Chief Teresa Theetge did not release names or the details of the charges, and said during a news conference Monday that police were on the lookout for the suspects. "Anyone who put their hands on another individual during this incident in an attempt to cause harm will face consequences," Theetge told reporters. The melee happened just after 03:00 local time Saturday, Theetge said, and footage went viral after being posted online, including to a local crime-focused Facebook page. It's unclear what triggered the brawl or happened before or after people started recording the incident with their phones. One video showed two men square off, with bystanders variously filming, watching and attempting to intervene, before a vicious fight broke out. One of the men was surrounded by others who began beating him in the middle of a downtown street. Other scuffles broke out and a man was seen punching a woman until she lost consciousness. Theetge said that out of the roughly 100 people in the area at the time only one called police and that alcohol consumption played a part. "They were fighting in front of traffic. Why didn't somebody [else] call us?" the police chief said. Vice-President Vance told a crowd in Canton, Ohio on Monday that the incident was "disgusting". 'What I saw, and I haven't seen the full context, but what I saw is a mob of lawless thugs beating up on an innocent person," he said. "I hope every single one of those people who engage in violence is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law." Vance grew up nearby and his half-brother Cory Bowman is running for mayor of Cincinnati. Bowman criticised city officials and called the video a "wake-up call". Vivek Ramaswamy, a former Republican Party presidential candidate who also grew up in the area and is running for Ohio governor, criticised the response and accused "leftists" of being soft on crime. Chief Theetge said traffic was heavy in the area because of several events late Friday, but officers were on the scene six minutes after the call. By that time, the assailants had scattered. The virality of the video was also propelled by people suggesting that race was a motivation for the fighting and that the story allegedly did not receive media attention because several assailants were black. An unnamed witness told local news station WXIX the confrontation began 15 minutes before the video's start and a group was overheard making "racial comments". One man in the initial confrontation shown on the video was white while several others were black, and the white man was later beaten by a group of what appeared to be mostly black men after the serious violence began. The woman who was punched appeared to be white and struck by a younger black man. Harmeet Dhillon, assistant attorney general for civil rights, posted: "Nobody in our great nation should be the victim of such a crime, and where race is a motivation, federal law may apply." Videos, though, also showed black men trying to help quell the violence. Signal 99, the Facebook account that first brought some of the footage to light, posted that "these are not blacks targeting whites, simply for being white". "We saw several black men attempt to intervene last night, knowing they could be jumped next by the mob. So please stop with the racist commentary," the post also read. The uncertainty around the event did not stop several popular right-wing accounts from speculating about its cause. "HORRIFIC: White couple brutally beat by black mob in Cincinnati," wrote the Libs of TikTok account on X. "You probably won't see this story in the MSM [mainstream media]." Elon Musk replied to that message and to another tweet, writing "Why zero stories?", despite coverage in a number of local and national news outlets. Community supports Lorain Police Department after ambush, shooting of 3 officers
LORAIN, Ohio (WJW) – After community members learned that three Lorain Police officers were ambushed and shot on Wednesday, a memorial began to grow outside the Lorain Police Department. Suspect accused of 'ambushing' three local officers identified That continued on Thursday as people who wanted to offer support or simply pay their respects stopped by the station where a Lorain Police cruiser is now parked out front near the memorial. Lifelong Lorain resident Debbie Siss told Fox 8 News she saw the flags outside at half-staff and felt compelled to stop. 'It makes me feel sad, and it makes me love Lorain even more because our police officers, they protect us. They help us, and to have somebody just shooting them down, that's chicken. He's a big chicken,' she said about the deceased suspect accused of shooting the officers. A group of about a dozen retired Lorain officers were set to get together for a reunion on Wednesday. One of them is Larry Giese, who spent 20 of his 28 years with LPD as the head K-219 trainer. He shared that he wanted to offer his support to those he still knows at the department. When she learned of the tragedy she decided to bring Hufflepuff the bulldog to the Lorain Police Department to try and help officers cope because she knows the kind of trauma this situation can cause. 'Police officers, we need them so much, and every police officer is a hero and they also need the support from the community so that when this type of tragedy happens, that these officers are getting that support,' Laffredo said. 'All of the officers are going to go through some sort of trauma and all of the officers need a little bit of wellness checkup, and sometimes just a great therapy dog can help them out a lot.' FOP speaks out after local officers hit by gunfire twice in days Northeast Ohioans are also showing support with monetary donations.
